I was just getting some people's thought on this.

Would you want to keep Pick 14 or Did you like the Choice of Trading for Jolly?

1st I was all for getting Jolly as he would really help us in the Ruck but Then I saw he was 28 years old and I don't know how much longer he could go for. Could play good footy for another 4-5 seasons but also could only be 1-2 Seasons.

IF we kept Pick 14 we could of got a Good Young Ruck Prospect like Nathan Vardy who I like:

or maybe

So it is Intresting about this - Your Thoughts?

No brainer. Jolly easily.

He is at least assured of playing a game barring injury. There are top 10 picks in the draft who never play a game, and it gets progressively worse the further out you go.

Jolly, i know your a draft fan TD but still jolly by the length of fleminton

We are a top 4 side with crap rucks, we are now a top 4 side with a tap machine ruck

Considering we couldnt offload Fraser, i wouldnt be totally against keeping pick14, BUT, it was the right decision for the club. As mentioned earlier, Jolly is a proven player and you know what youre going to get, and pick14 could be anything. Whats done is done....

-Weak draft
-Even in the strong drafts there are no guarantees
-Young list with plenty of young talent already
-In need of a ruckman
-Jolly a big, strong, top 5 ruckman in the AFL, in his prime and with no injury problems

So in summary Jolly quite comfortably

Getting Jolly was a great move!

That said I still would have liked us to have kept out pick.

Our draft without the trade could have looked like:

Pick 14: Troy Taylor (Hybrid of Lance Franklin and Daniel Motlop. Medium size forward who would add to the team a bit like Steve Johnson would). This guy has no roof in terms of what he could become. Northern Territory Prospect who I think could become the best in the draft.

Pick 30: Josh Thomas (Dayne Beams like kid. Inside mid with nice skills. From Southport QLD)

Pick 46: James Craig (U18 All Australian Ruckman. Undersized at 195cm, but can jump through the roof and was the dominant ruck in the U18 champs) Would be an instant replacement for Leigh Brown as the versatile fill the gaps guy.

Pick 62: Matthew Panos (U18 All Australian Full Forward, could go as low as rookie some think. Very over rated on this site and could drop this far.)

Pick 78: Claye Beams (Brother of Dayne)

*In the absense of James Craig at Pick 46 or Matthew Panos at Pick 62. Would take a look at Andrew Hooper and Ryan Harwood for Pick 46. Beams with Pick 62 in the absense of Panos.

That said we were not wrong to get Jolly. He should last another 4-5 years and still play quality football. He is another steping stone towards a premeriship.

Just would have loved to have traded players instead for Jolly eg. Goldsack, Wellingham, Cox and Dawes with a late pick. Stanley and Cook also seem like Sydney type players.

Just really think that at Pick 14 we would have had something special in Troy Taylor.

Now our draft will look like

*Players in bold are players I hope will be available at our pick*

Pick 30: (Players we should be looking at)
Luke Ball
Troy Taylor
Josh Thomas (Most likely best available with Ball and Taylor most likely gone by this point with Taylor who I think could go in the 1st round and Ball likely to go in the 20s)
Jesse Critchon (expected to go mid 20s but if available worth considering. like his tackling pressure.)
Jack Fitzpatrick (We were considering this lanky ruck prospect at pick 14, he has been linked to us, most likely a early to mid 20s pick but has the ability to play ruck or key position. Won the repeat sprint test at draft camp so very athletic.)
James Craig (U18 All Aus ruck. 195cm only, but can jump through the roof and a prospect who can play key position back also. Would be used in a Leigh Brown role. Could possibly go later in the draft.)
Matthew Panos (U18 All Aus FF. Kicks straight which would certainly be attractive. Could possibly go later in the draft.)

Pick 62: (Harder to predict who will be available here but ideas include:)
James Craig (Most likely gone but some think he could go late... we can only hope. U18 AA Ruck)
Matthew Panos (Some think could go as late as the rookie draft, but then again could also go in the 1st round. We can only hope he drops! U18 AA FF)
Claye Beams (Brother of Dayne, could probably pick him at 78 though)
Dylan Joyce (Just to put a different name in)

Fraser wasn't put on the table, so it'll be interesting where we play him. Don't really want to see Wood back in the VFL unless he can't find his heart.

I think Fraser will be used in the backup role because his game really compliments Jolly really well. Jolly is a big bodied ruckman who can play most of the minutes while Fraser can play backup with limited minutes and also play as a versatile tall forward which I think he could do better than Wood.

Wood will be used when injuryies occur only. Could very well happen though considering Fraser's history, just with less time in the ruck hopefully less injuries for the big guy and hopefully another few years can be added to his career because of it.

If we still had pick 14 Troy Taylor would be our man. Then if you want a backup ruck then hope that one of Fitzpatrick or James Craig drop to pick 30.

A backup ruck isn't that important with Fraser, Wood who is developing strongly, Keefe who is developing well and only about a year off playing some AFL football and then Shae McNamara who is also comming.

Jolly is good in that he is immediate help, and despite his age he doesn't get injured frequently which is a great advantage. He will be a great compliment to Jolly.

Just for me Troy Taylor is far too intriguing at Pick 14. Forget all other prospects unless someone like Tapscott or Rohan falls which wouldn't happen.

Personally happy either way. Jolly will be good and well worth what we traded away, but time will tell just how good Troy Taylor will be, and I see that kid being an absolute monster.

Yeah youre right, Fraser wasnt 'officially' put on the table, but there were alot of mixed stories after the b&f night, and during trade week. I think it will also be a waste to have Wood in the VFL, but thats the most likely scenario at this stage.

I would not Picked Taylor at 14 as he would been too much of a Risk

I think Leaving Wood in the VFL would be a Waste - He needs time in the AFL and Fraser can't ruck because of his Dodgy Knee

Fair Enough But I would be Scared that Troy Taylor would not make it and I would not Risk it at pick 14 but if there at 30, Would be more then happy to make that Pick.

I liked Vardy because he looks like he could become a Strong Bodied Ruckman

TBH I don't think we needed pick 14 as far as youth goes I think we are doing pretty well we really needed to get a good ruckman and we got one of the best in the league.

I only see Fraser as a player who has around 2 years left in him anyway.

The thing about Fraser is that the club values his on and off field leadership and I just can't see him being left out of the side if fit.

Wood performed well towards the end of the season and is a better no.1 ruck than Fraser. But the way I see it being next year is Jolly will get 80%-85% of ruck minutes and Fraser will only have to relieve a bit like Leigh Brown did this year. Fraser is great at ground level and when rucking plays like an extra mid which is really a nice dimension to have and I think would be something more ruckman would have trouble dealing with.

Cam Wood I think would thrive more as the no.1 ruckman more so than a mere backup. I see him spending the year in the VFL (assumed Fraser is fit) but then in 2011 genuinely contesting a place in the side with Fraser once he has filled out some more and become a more consistant rucking force which could leave Fraser on a half forward flank most likely.

Pick 62: Matthew Panos (U18 All Australian Full Forward, could go as low as rookie some think. Very over rated on this site and could drop this far.)

Panos is considered a first round pick by alot of people. Doubtful he will fall out of the top 20 IMO. No way will he be available at 62.

Vardy would have make sense. He certainly would not have been best player available and is probably only an early 20s quality but would have filled a need. One player that we were very closely linked with is Jack Fitzpatrick who has spent some time training with our club. He is an athletic ruckman rather than a strong bodied one. Would be more a project ruckman and is more a mid quality 20s pick.

With Troy Taylor I heard that we were on of about 5-6 clubs that interviewed Troy Taylor. Apparently we had real interest in him at pick 14. There was also talk the club liked Bastinaic. (Who will go around pick 19).

Interesting to speculate anyway.

I am aware what people on this site think of him but...

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/86059/default.aspx

Matthew Panos (Norwood, SA)
Height: 192cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 25/01/91
Recruited from: Rostrevor College
Some believe the All-Australian goalkicker is a first-rounder; others view him as a rookie.
Draft range: 15-rookie

So yes he could very well go 1st round. But he could also slip. So one to keep an eye out for if available. I think all Pies fans would be pretty happy with the U18 All Australian Full Forward who can kick straight if we could snag him with pick 62!

I wasn't saying he wouldn't slip just that I doubt it would be that far. If we got him at 62 I would be stoked - if we got him at 30 likewise. For an article to say his draft range is pick 15 to rookie is more than vague and smacks me laziness/conservatism by the journalist. I think a good conservative estimate would be to say he will be picked up inside to top 30, very doubtful he will fall further than that.

The only players with such open draft range that I have come accross are really James Craig (Pick 18-late) Matthew Panos (15-rookie) and Josh Thomas (20-60).

Panos could go as early as Port Adelaide because pick 16 is their last pick in my view. They need a key position forward and being an U18 All Australian from SA he would be an attractive prospect. Opinions differ in that he isn't so much a dominant full forward but someone who more so kicks straight at goal and in the U18 championships benefited from a very good SA midfield. The thing with him is if he slips past pick 16 he could really go anywhere in this draft which will make him interesting.

I agree if we really want him I think we will need to take him at pick 30 where he quite likely could be very available. But pick 62 I also doubt he will be. Just if he is and we get someone like say Josh Thomas at 30, he would be a great pick.
