Adelaide coach Neil Craig admits his club face an uphill struggle to keep Kurt Tippett from choosing the comforts of a Gold Coast AFL home when his contract expires at the end of 2010.
Tippett, a Queenslander, is rapidly emerging as one of the league's most promising key forward/ruck prospects, kicking seven goals in the Crows' round 11 victory over Essendon and also plucking a contender for mark of the season.
He is most definitely on the radar of GC17 scouts, and would appear ideally suited to the expansion club's need for a strong start-up squad as he should be in the prime of his career when they enter the national competition in 2011.
Speculation about Tippett's future has intensified in direct proportion to his on-field exploits for Adelaide, while he added fuel to the talk this week by knocking back the offer of a contract extension.
Tippett also has a Queensland-based girlfriend, and Craig said that in this case, the go-home factor was significant.
"The go home factor is big, put yourself in his shoes, would you like to be able to play AFL football in your home state? Yeah. So we understand that," Craig said on Thursday.
"It's something which is a challenge to us and that's not going to change, because he's from Queensland and they're actually going to have a team on the Gold Coast where he comes from, about as close as you can get.
"In the end all we can do is create an environment to give Kurt the coaching we're trying to give him, create an environment that includes relationships with management, teammates, Adelaide, the whole thing.
"And then you take your chances on it ... we can only do what we can do."
Adelaide's young players have spoken confidently and often about their desire to grow together and ultimately win a premiership - the sort of corporate spirit that will dissuade many of the club's interstate recruits to stay on through homesickness.
But Tippett's links to the Gold Coast make him particularly vulnerable, especially now that their previous No.1 target, St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt, has ruled himself out via a new deal with the Saints.

Nothing new in this article at all.

Craig has just been honest. If he came out and said keeping Kurt was easy then he would be flamed for being stupid and naive. This article has made me more confident that the AFC understand exactly the situation and will try their upmost to keep him as a Crow for as long as possible.

I wonder who wrote that article? Someone from the GC maybe trying to fuel speculation?

If Tippett's goal is to become an elite AFL player than his short term future at the very least should be with the AFC. If his goal is to accumulate wealth then it is with the GC 17.

The real conflict will be if money is not an issue and he is not interested in forging a huge career, but rather wants to return home to be with his GF and family. Then really its game, set and match.

I hope Tippett realises his short term future at the very least will be best served at the Crows! The GC 17 will always want to seek his services whether it be now or in 3 years time if he signs another contract with the AFC.

Why would Tippett not forge a huge and successful career at GC? He will be their pin-up player, will be their ruckman/forward for 10 years, and in that time - based on the priority picks GC will get - is likely to play in a successful team.

Its unknown if GC will be a success or not. If he waits it out at Adelaide for 2 years, he will still get his massive pay packet to head up there and he would have been able to see if they start to perform or end up as a big steaming pile of shit.

I have faith that the Tipster will stay with us for at least another 2 years.

Hopefully he'll want to repay the faith that got him playing AFL in the first place... judging by the state of the NBL, he certainly wouldn't be doing as well playing basketball, unless he wanted to move even further from home!

This is one case where I dont want to be proven right, but he is going. He has delayed contract negotiatoins and Craig has all but given the reasons why he will go.

...waaah?

So creating a good bond of wanting to stay together, will make the interstate guys want to go home?

Have they worded that wrong? Doesnt make sense to me.

They have worded it wrong, yes - the word should have been persuade, not dissuade

Considering the outcome of Kurt staying looks doubtful, it makes the decision not to delist sellar even more vital. Lets home he has turned a corner.

If Kurt does go, its important some of the young KPPs we picked up last draft turn into solid AFL players.

Interesting times ahead. Maybe the club should recruit sugar or fergus as a consultant to tell the kids how the grass isn't always greener....lol

Someone find me THE PANIC BUTTON! HIT IT HIT IT HIT!!!!!!

Fair dinkum.

What a beatup.

Let's worry about it when it's worth worrying about eh?

Agreed, what is there -a season and a half of speculation to go? Until he kicked 7 half of this board didnt really care so much.

On a side note Im curious about what we pay our players- Ive never really followed it. My recollection though is that we dont throw big money at players and are conservative, much like we are with years. e.g roo and macca at the peak of their powers wouldnt be on the same cash as buckley or hird commanded at that time. Is that right?

Swine flu board! :D

[Except that Rumsfeld is not getting rich from the GC17 franchise]

The sky is falling!

He might go... but he might stay.

It's the same deal with my job. I like my job a lot - I don't want to leave, but I sure as hell am going to if someone offers to double my money. On the flip side, if my current employer matched that offer, I'd stay.

Kurt is doing exactly the right thing to maximize his income (Well, his management is). This is reality folks.

i hope he stays, he will be an afl superstar at the crows, in saying that I really dont think he would be where he is at if he was with any other club. I think the footy culture at the AFC and the faith shown by the coaching team has really impacted on his career to date. I wonder if any other clubs would have recruited him?

Yes he would of been recruited by other clubs, and more than likely would still be showing signs at other clubs. The signs he's shown is great, but saying we're the only club that would of got that out of him is absolutely ridiculous.

I hope he does go to the Gold Coast then does he knee in the first game and has to retire.
too harsh?? :p

I don't think he's going anywhere. If the Gold Coast wasn't around, no one would speculate him going home to Brisbane. But if he does go to the Gold Coast because they offer him more money and the Crows couldn't match it, then good on him (well, more like f*** him) - he'd rather have money than a premiership :thumbsu:

Way too harsh. You should never, ever, be wishing an injury to any player - particularly one who is on our own list.

I sincerely doubt that his decision will be based on money alone. We have to convince him that his ties to Adelaide (and the team) are stronger than his ties to the GC (and his girlfriend & family).
