Who are the medium defenders who will go high in this years draft

Luke McDonald if he wasn't a father son would be a serious top end defender.

Matt Scharenberg will likely be that first medium defender selected if the draft was held tomorrow and is that only medium defender who projects as a first rounder at this point.

Paul Marschall if he elects to enter next years draft is another who could be an absolute ripper as that elite kicker. Would have gone in the national draft as a mature ager had he entered the draft.

Also Josh Toy still interests me as another elite kick and if he can prove he can run out games for the whole 120 minutes then no reason why he can't find his way back onto an AFL list.

For defenders I'd recommend just looking at the state leagues and see who performs next year. Each year there seem to be 5-6 who come up from nowhere and really come into their own as defenders and often can be found either late draft or rookie draft. It's better than blowing an early draft pick on a speculative defender as many of those better defenders either start out as midfielders or forwards or develop into quality defenders later in their careers.

Hi KM. The word on the Richmond forum is that they don't rate this year's draft and will be happy to trade their first 2 draft picks for young homesick players from GWS. I was under the impression that this year's draft would probably be of better quality than last years?

It depends on what you are looking for from the draft.

2013 is certainly not a year you want to be drafting ruckmen but probably a very good year for outside types with a real depth of them.

There is nothing wrong with going after homesick GWS players. I think Geelong going after Caddy will prove a masterstroke and I think a club could have similar success with one of the GWS boys. I expect there will be a number of them with Dom Tyson and Will Hoskin-Elliott rumoured among them and both quality young talents. No reason not to trade your first and or second round draft pick for these types of talents.

Don't know if this has been asked before but is Nick Bourke a father-son for Richmond?

He plays for the Geelong Falcons. I don't have any information if he is a F/S but if he is I'm sure someone will let me know during the year. But one of those Falcons who looks a strong draft chance for this year as that speedy, nice kicking outside type.

Willie Rioli... could he end up at Hawthorn, how about Toby Nankervis's chances this year?

Toby needs to elevate his game. Big guy with a strong body but very raw, movement questionable and really needs to improve in this respect. Not so many quality ruck options this year so if he can step up his game and come back fitter then he can get drafted but this far you can never say never so we'll see what he produces this year.

Just turned 18 (yesterday) and he has a beard.

He will destroy the national champs.

I'll give him some feedback, cause I know him. Shem Tatapu anything on him? :)

Hey mate, apologies if this has been answered before, but there don't seem to be many KPDs in your list apart from Heatherley. If one was most likely to step up and go early, who would you expect that to be?

Also, on Justin Hardy - at this stage, what pick would you think he was worth? Somewhere around 50-60, or would you prefer to opt for a rookie pick?

Cheers. :thumbsu:

Other than Heatherley it's difficult to find that next key defender.

Tom Cutler looks like that better option at this point not named Heatherley. Unclear whether Cutler develops into a key defender/general defender or midfielder because at this point he looked capable of playing all the above. He could well be a first or second round choice.

Darcy Gardner and Fraser Fort are those other guys at this stage but there is every chance someone else comes through this year.

With Justin Hardy he was a potential rookie type this year and may be considered again. It really depends on whether he takes another step forward again this year or whether a team is looking for that more mature tall. My feel is if he backs up his strong form of last year that he may be considered late/rookie.

Hi KM - the Bulldogs have a potential F/S draftee this year - Jayden Foster (Calder Cannons).

Do you know much about him - type of player he is, likelihood to get drafted on current ability/potential, etc?

Saw a 'local' article about the Cannons and they are on record saying they have about 12-13 players that could be drafted, but no stand-outs at the moment (unlike the 2012 draft)...
