hey Knightmare

Any state league guys you've heard good things on? (talking about guys in the VFL with 2+ years of experience now).

They'll mostly spring up during the year.

Often it's those who have a ripping preseason or come up from a lower level competition who suddenly surprise.

From the SANFL Brett Eddy (ex Collingwood VFL) had a strong first game for South Adelaide and is high on my watchlist. Trent Goodrem, James Boyd, Matt Thomas and Angus Rowntree all also playing some good footy with Josh Waldhuter another I've still got my eye on.
In the WAFL Marlon Motlop looking good with Shane Nelson continuing where he left off last year.

Any you're liking in the VFL at this stage?

Knightmare, great start to 2013 draft:thumbsu:

What's Dayle Garrlett , don't tell me another huge flush of talent down the toilet.

I know some said he needed to get out of WA , surely if he was serious about getting into the AFL he would come over here , get in front of recruiters playing VFL for someone. Or perhaps SA etc.

Anyway , I see there on the AFL site a bit about Ben Lennon. Opinion?

Garlett is playing at Swan Districts again this year. BOG in the reserves last weekend, and has been named in the league side for this week. I don't mind the fact that he stayed in WA. It's his best chance at playing league football, and if he can get his life together and train/play at a professional level at home surrounded by all that apparent temptation, then that would mean more than going interstate. Obviously it wont mean much if we get a repeat of last year, but it's all up to him now.

I don't want to take over this thread, so I'll leave Lennon to Knightmare. But I expect he'll be climbing the rankings soon enough. Same goes for Marcus Bontempelli, who I think is a genuine first round chance.

Lennon could be this year's Jono O'Rourke. Playing as a receiver in the midfield where he can use his beautiful long kicking skills, I thought he was BOG in the Knights first game.

Bontempelli will draw comparisons to Jobe Watson as the year goes on. Massive size at 191cm for an under 18 midfielder and his strength is winning the hard ball. he's good at keeping his feet and not bad at extracting it out to his team mates, really needs to work on composing himself when he's open before he kicks though.

Garlett is a heck of a talent. But more importantly his production has always been there. Just on him to prove that he will keep his head down and do the right things on and off the field. If he gets the off-field side right I he'll get drafted.

Lennon is looking exceptionally promising and the calls for him to go first round are on the ball at this early point. He's always been one of those quality prospects but up until this year has really only been a forward who can also play some defence. This year he is stepping into the midfield and really demonstrating that he does have that in his game which was always that next step for him. Endurance still building and needs to continue to improve his inside game but his skill set very impressive with the penetration he has on him he looks a real weapon as that quality goalkicking midfielder.

Hopefully Ben becomes the best Lennon of them all since John Lennon (unrelated.)

Don't know much about Julian.

It's going to be interesting to see how Aish vs McDonald pans out this year, because to me, even early in the year, they look like the two standout mids in my eyes. They will probably line up opposite each other in the championships too, with South Australia having a pretty strong side this year.

Aish has started the season with 20 disposals and 13 disposals for Norwood in the SANFL.

McDonald's gotten 29 disposals and a goal against Port Melbourne and backed it up with 26 and a goal against the Bullants for Werribee.

The funny thing is, they could line up against each other earlier than the champs. If Norwood beat East Fremantle in Rnd 1 of the Foxtel Cup, they will play Werribee in the Semi Final. McDonald has been playing HBF/Wing for Werribee, so they could potentially be on each other in the Foxtel Cup Semi......

There's also a Jesse Aish at Norwood.

Well that explains it! thought it was a quick recovery, even if he did have his shoulder surgery around December.

Well the Crows can still take Jesse as a F/S at least.:D

Going to be an interesting year for the Tassie boys. No absolute standout like last year, but some pretty good athletes coming through. I am starting to favour Kade Kolodjashnij as our most likely. Good size, good skills, and a good athlete. But it's really pretty even between him, Zac Webster, and Eli Templeton at this stage. Zac is consistently performing for Glenorchy, and would like to see more of Templeton this year to see how he is developing. Can't wait for the Champs to start.

how high do you bontempelli will go,west coast need to find some more inside mid depth?do you think he can become elite like watson?

We can only hope, haha - I think our supporters will go crazy if we draft another inside mid.

My preference at this point is to secure somebody like Boyd or Conlon with our first pick and then look at securing a small forward with our second. After that, best available outside mids/small defenders. Would love to pick up a mature KPP with a late pick as well - have liked Hardy for a few years now.
Would love a rebounding HBFer type, although gun mids at junior level can be developed to play that role in the seniors.

Yeah, a lot of HBFers are wingmen that are started there. I'm not sure I'd target one with our first pick. By the time we're challenging JJ (and hopefully Pearce) are coming along nicely; both look to be pretty capable. I'd love some genuine line-breaking pace back there, but it's probably more likely to come from a rotating midfielder than anything else.

Boyd, Billings and Sheed are probably my top three that I (realistically) hope the 'Dogs choose out of for their first pick. Not sure Boyd will be there and Aish definitely won't be.

Ja, I imagine teams will start trying to drag JJ back near the goal line (play him like Harbrow) so another rebounder would be ideal.
Still queries on Pearce's pace but happy to give him time.

Would have liked to roll the dice on Colquhoun last year but he may not play "B-Mac" style football

Is there a chance Aaron Heppell could be taken low enough to go to Essendon?

He's making good progress but still has some way to go before he even enters the first round conversation.

Unless Essendon sell up those first two draft picks this year Heppell should be available.

Watching the AIS video, Robertson looks extremely impressive. Anyone know who number 30 for the AIS was? Tall guy, seemed to be playing in defense, then through the ruck at times. Looked good also.
