i know everyone hates carlton, i sure do, but did you see schoenmakers last night? i can say without hyperbole that he just played the worst game i've seen from a defender for many, many years.

henderson, and easily

shoe had a shocker last night against the cats but at least he is in the game...getting the pill.

When we last played the blues Henderson was invisible....I watched the replay later on tv and he wasnt even in the screen.

Watch it again. He had Buddy's measure in the second half.

Henderson easy for mine. Played well last year - a 20yo CHF snagging 25 goals from 19 games, second highest team contested marks (20), in a forward line being restructured. By the end of his first year with Carlton he was starting to put in some impressive performances. Had Murphy-like hip surgery in December and has only recently started getting his body right. His last 6 quarters against quality opponents in Buddy and Nick Riewoldt have been outstanding.

Meanwhile how bad was Shoenmakers last night. Almost everything he touched turned to shit. Was a complete liability both in the contest and outside of it. Just didn't look up to AFL standard.

Honestly?

Henderson - by a mile.

Schoenmakers was absolutely horrendous last night and has put in a fair few shockers thus far in his career.

He'll improve and it is way too early to write him off, but based on what both have shown thus far in their respective careers, this one is not even close.

How do you know Shoenmakers is a shit forward he hasn't been played there.

Henderson looks to be the better defender by some margin right now.
He played as both a key forward and defender as a junior, you do realize?

He was good against Buddy when the ball wasn't going in there, that's for sure. Was outpointed in just about every contest though.

Was outmarked a few times but his disposal and decision making have improved, and those were the knocks on him from last year. He hasn't been as tight on his opponents for whatever reason since his return from injury.

his decision making and disposal was worse than ever on friday night.

Henderson AINEC.

Schoenmakers is never going to be a KPD. Doesn't have the body, competitiveness or brain to make it at this level.

Hawthorn supporters need to wake up and stop hoping that this guy is the answer to all our problems. Henderson is looking a lot more promising, obviously he's not going to be competing with Franklin on the lead (who is really?) but at least he doesn't look like a fish out of water in a one-on-one when the ball is kicked deep into the forward line to no-one's true advantage.

There were two out on the full jobs, one of them was excusable as it was just a kick out of defence under pressure. His decision making in defence has normally been good this year, particularly in contrast to the previous seasons.

How many times have you seen him try and take on tackles in our back 50 and get pinned rather than just taking the first option?

Classic Hodgepodge paragraphs - the talk down and the talk up.

On the talk down, I recommend you watch the second half of that game with your other eye open. Hendo outpointed Buddy more than once. Pretending that the ball didn't go down there for a half is some pretty lame protectionism.

Meanwhile Shoenmakers talk up doesn't resemble his game at all. Made some poor decisions and booted balls out on the full. Looked well below AFL level.

No doubt he did, but Franklin won the majority of contests. The goals dried up when the inside 50s dried up. Didn't mean to imply that the ball didn't enter the forward 50 at all.

One of the out on the full kicks was excusable, one wasn't. skill has never been a problem, but the decision making has improved a lot from last year, to the point where it hasn't been a problem for him this season.

Not in the second half he didn't. Even in the first half Hendo won a few contests. When it dried up for Buddy was when the Hawks no longer dominated the midfield and balls stopped coming in lace out to advantage.

Still. No need to talk the lad down. Clearly better than Shoenmakers.

Was obviously below AFL standard against the Cats.

What you call lace out delivery I'd call Franklin leading Henderson to the ball. The midfield stopped in the second half which makes it hard for most forwards to score.

Nick Duigan and co coming across to double team also helped.

Was obviously below AFL standard against the Cats.

Point stands that his decision making has improved and this is borne out in the stats.

Hendo

shoenmakers is not a kpd suited up forward

I'd like to see him playing on a third tall. Did some good jobs this year on those types, with Sam Reid, Liam Jones, etc, all nullified. It will also give him a better chance to rebound, which he is good at.

The comparison between Henderson and Schoenmakers would be better made in a year or two when Schoenmakers catches up in his development. Henderson has a year and 10 kg on Schoen at the moment.

Dont think much of either of them yet, I concede it is hard to judge at the moment as both teams are down to there dregs in tall defenders and both are being matched up on players well out of there class. Should be less pressure on each of them next year.

Ahhh is Hendo really being compared to Shoey? Hendo, the player that has played games that are out and out bathing on his opponents this year...

Come on people... put your Carlton hatred aside for 1 second! Hendo has the making to being one of the best KPP defenders in the league!
