The Giant's 2014 draft is an interesting sliding doors moment for the club.

Pick #4 - Jarrod Pickett (gone to Carlton after 2016, still listed)
Pick #6 - Caleb Marchbank (gone to Carlton after 2016, still listed)
Pick #7 - Paul Ahern (gone to North after 2016, still listed).

Only their 4th years and all three got regular gametime towards the tail end of the season (Ahern fairing best), so might still turn into reasonable players. Jury is still out on Pickett, but Marchbank looks best-22 and Ahern has played well at North. Still, 'spudding' up those high selections and trading them on cheaply after only 2 years might have hurt their contention to date.

I understand list management at the Giants is a complex endeavour with some surplus to requirements, but if they had nailed that draft their 2016-18 might have been even better.

Still, two straight prelims and a SF is a fair effort for a fledgling club, worthy of some acknowledgment.

I dunno how much difference it would have made really. The Giants lineup has far more talent than the Collingwood lineup, the Pies were just far more organised and desperate to win. I'm comfortable that with hindsight Marchbank and Ahern look like justifying how high they went, even if they are now doing well at other clubs, but Pick 4 was far too high for Pickett. Especially when DeGoey went the very next pick, and was one of Collingwood's best last night.

Kind of feel next year is GWS' last real chance before their players start thinking of moving on to bigger and better things.

Did exceptionally well after looking for all money that they were going to miss the 8. With all those big name absentees against the Pies and to fall just 10 points short of a prelim final was a bloody good effort.

Their young midield talent is scary and they're gonna have a crack at it for the next 5 years id they can keep their squad together.

Them and Melbourne will rule the AFL for the next half decade. Pies will have a say too. But the Dees and Giants are the next Geelong and Hawthorns that's for sure.

2016 was the year that a better coach would have gotten them over the line. No injuries, older guns still at peak form and the kids were all mature enough to have a big impact. They had the Swans’ measure that year too. That was the flag that should have been for GWS.

He’s gotten better as a coach since then and deserves one more year to see if he can pull it off with a better injury run than he had this year.

If they don’t make a GF next year I think he’s Max Gawn.

It was the clubs first year in finals. Noone expected a flag in 2016.
No person expects a coach to be sacked for not making a GF.

Why are they so shit? Their side is stacked with talent.

Really stupid post.
Duh

No half sensible person expects a coach to be sacked for not making a GF.

Finals inexperience didn’t stop an equally young Bulldogs from winning a premiership.

In the 2016 prelim, GWS’s team was older on average and had played 500 more games than their opponents. Didn’t have any injury concerns either.

So that’s not a valid excuse. And exactly why that was the one that got away. A Clarkson or Beveridge or even a Scott would have won the flag that year with that list.

With the players at Cameron’s disposal, next year is make or break for him. If GWS only go as far as they did this year again, some heads will roll. Might be seen as time to refresh if Shiel and Kelly leave too, as expected.

Mmmm
Your club wasn't new, comparing the two is rationally absurd. You've had more than ample time to be successful. The rest if your post is just a personal fantasy. I'll leave you to that.

I get why you’re upset. Might be best to sit these threads out rather than keeping making a fool of yourself tbh.

When you start telling me what's in my mind, I know your fantasising. There's no other possible explanation.

Are we now sacking coaches for getting their teams into finals, but not winning flags?

This site has some real quality, seriously...

Winning away is difficult.

If only we could play 80% of our games in NSW... [emoji848]

If only 90% of our opponents came from interstate when they played at our home ground...

Really depends what happens in the off season before you can assess where they are at and what pressure Cameron might be under.

If (and it’s a big if) players like Shiel and Lobb are leaving - then perhaps the window closes for a short time.

Depends on if the rumours of salary cap issues for next year are true.

You must admit, with Kelly, Shiel and Cogniglio all wanting out of the next 12months things aren’t looking good. And they are just the ones we know about !!!:eek:

There is heat on Cameron to perform because most people know the LIST on paper looks good. When he lost 4 in a row he then "Went to the bench" with talk there were conflicts going on in the coaching box. There was big pressure at that point on him I think. Without that form turnaround I think he would have been sacked this year.

Whoever made the decision to focus more defensively in 2017 from a fairly good attacking gameplan in 2016 needs to be held responsible. There are a lot of fast, creative players at GWS who are being hamstrung. The faster gameplan that made other teams fear and admire GWS in 2016 needs to be brought back especially with new rule changes favoring such things. As much talk as there was of "GWS players only run one way" in 2016, it was our best year and for good reason. If you want more defense you don't turn creative players into them, you bring them into the side. Look at what Ross Lyon turned Stephen Hill into, he was a game breaking running gun up until Ross turned him into a questioning defensive player. His brother at Hawthorn enjoyed better coaching that allowed him to utilize his talents more.

Maybe you should be forced to play home games where you get no home field advantage.

WCE get a home final against Melbourne

Richmond get a home final at a neutral ground.

Stop ya bitching!!

Well we dont get away games moved to our home for us.

WCE get a home final against Melbourne

Richmond get a home final at a neutral ground.

Stop ya bitching!!

What a bizarre rewriting of history. Stephen Hill a `gun` up until Lyon - no, Lyon has by far got the best seasons out of Hill compared to any other coach. Brad Hill won a B&F too.

Beveridge and Scott are closer to Cameron than Clarkson in terms of being a `master coach`. Let's not go overboard in declaring what those 2 could have done.

If you look at the 4 teams playing in the final 2 weeks of the year, they play the quickest brand of football in the AFL. Quicker at finding space and moving the ball to their advantage. GWS looked like my team last night, skilled but too slow. They need to up-tempo if they wish to progress further into finals. Certainly the talent is there.
