Roast Leon Davis should be dropped

Has done Stuff all, All season long and looks so out of touch it's not funny. People who say he gives great forward Pressure. Well that not good enough just to be good at that.

Needs a Run in the 2nds to get his Form Back or if he is injured/sore he needs a rest

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Normally I don't weigh in on selection debates but I have to agree with this one (to an extent). Leon has been ok, not himself and definately down due to injury or confidence. He is fumbling where he is normally clean, giving away frees and basically a shadow of himself from the last couple of years.

If he is carrying an injury next week is the time to give him a break. If not, a stint in the twos. Brisbane's defence is depleted and has no run in its legs. Perfect opprtunity for an early rest for Leon.

If this is true then why not let him get confidence here?

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Leon Davis should not play football for Collingwood again. Not that he is a bad player, just he can't perform when it counts. Has had countless opportunities and has failed on every occasion. You can't honestly expect to perserve with that when there are younger more hungry people waiting in the wings....

Perfect fodder for the Gold Coast.

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Watching last night's game, Leon did play like crap again, but...

His teammates' passes to him always seem to be shit. Over the last few weeks, I've rarely seen a pass into the 50 hit him on the chest. I'm not sure if he's out of favour with other players, but nobody seems to want to kick it to him, and he rarely gets an outside possession. He has to work for his own ball all the time.

I don't understand why he's not getting a run in the middle at all? That'd be the best way to play him into some form, I reckon. Sticking him in a forward pocket with crap supply is hardly going to give him much confidence...

Piss off.:thumbsd::mad:

Leon is a small forward, small forwards hardly ever perform in big matches, IT'S THE ****ING HISTORY OF THE AFL/VFL.

Leon like most small forwards is a home and away player, while last night's game, especially after 1/4 time, was close to a final in terms of intensity and pressure.

And don't quote Johnson or Chapmans records in finals, they are not small forwards, they are medium forwards, HUUUUGGGEEE DIFFERENCE.

Leon will be remembered as the only indigenous player to play 200 games for the Collingwood Football Club, a fair achievement in itself.

He is nearing the end, but to say he should never play again is disgraceful.:thumbsd:

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Why Leon isn't being given a run from the centre square is staggering. It tells me that they are just trying to keep his workload down in the first half of the year. I think the coaching plan are trying to manage him from fatigue come the business end.

can you pull your head in?

the guy has done nothing all year, not only did he not do anything last night but he didnt even create a contest. if you are going to admit that he doesnt play well in big matches then whats the bloody point of having him or anyone like that when the only games worth winning are the big ones?

Well with Dick Coming back from a Serious Injury and Medders and Rounds Injured we did not have much choice.

I'll give you Rioli, but the top 3 are medium, strong bodied players, and Gavin Brown was a full forward almost.

Power was an outside player feeding off one of the greatest teams of all time, even Leon would have looked good in that Brisbane team.

Small forwards simply do not perform in big games, it is a concern I have for Brad Dick now too, as he is going to be Leon's long term replacement.

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Unfortunately Dick needs some more game time to get match fit & with the VFL state game this weekend we may have to wait a little longer, but yea he should go straight in for Leon when he's fit.

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Just absolute nonsense.

Especially bewildering considering Akermanis consistently tore us to shreds, and even a marginal player like Stokes kicked 3 important goals against us in our 5 point 2007 PF loss.

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Our forward 50 entries were shocking last night.

Leon Davis is a good into the forward 50 kick.

And yet, he's played in the pocket, too deep to do anything about it. I'd go as far as to say that he is played out of position as a forward pocket...

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

Leon is playing poorly and should be dropped. I know the delivery hasn't been great but there was a time where I think Hunt pinpointed a pass to him (which wasn't 15) and he stood there on the 50 like a deer in headlights for what seemed like an eternity before chipping it in to the pocket (I can't remember what happened next but pretty sure it was a turnover).
Whilst I unerstand he probably thought it was a mark if he was in any kind of form he would have played on to about 35-40 and slotted it through. Even if it was a mark he would have had to have kicked it 55 meters so not the best option and with the amount of time he was taking Geelong would have got their players in position so it would have been difficult to spot a player up. Whichever way you look at it it was a very poor piece of play.

Re: Have to Drop Leon Davis

He's playing poorly because he's being totally misused. He's one of your most explosive players...and you stick him down in the forward pocket....kicking balls over his head expecting him to conjure magic every time.

Stick him in the guts or on the wing as a link up player like Varcoe/Byrnes. He's a good tackler, and a great kick. His skills are being wasted at the moment IMO.

He hit Dane Swan on the chest 25m out on a slight angle, and if Swan was a better footballer he would have kicked a goal from it.

If you have as much space as Leon did after that turnover its fine to take your time and weigh up the options. He looked as though he was unsure if it was a mark at first....then stepped back and summed up his options. The end result was fine. Although Swan ballsed it up because he's a total hack with the ball in his hands:D

Bullshit he was anything but explosive last night at one stage in the last quarter had the perfect opportunity to take a mark and he ran away from the ball in another piece of play in the second quarter he got the ball 50 metres out from goal with space to run into and just stood still. I'm sick of the excuses his young, his injured, his under utilised. It has been going on his whole career bring in Lockyer, Medhurst or Dick someone who actually plays with a bit of heart as far as I'm concerned he doesn't deserve to play in black and white stripes until he proves he is up to it.

Um, another small forward, Paul Chapman doesn't do too badly in big games - the guy is only 179cm, 10cm shorter than SJohnson so hardly a mid sized forward!

I hope Leon gets his form back, a great player over the past two seasons, fantastic to watch.

Fair point, I did say I didn't remember but I did get it way off:D But still I think the point remains that if he was in form he would have played on, ran in a bit and slotted it through. I think some of his decisions have been a bit off, like last week when he passed it off to Luke Ball for a set shot from 40, I think everyone has been aware from early in the season that Ball isn't going to make this type of shot.

Edit: I just watched it on the AFL game analyser and it wasn't a slight angle, it was clearly in the pocket but it was a kickable goal.

I would say though he doesn't really play like a small forward in the same way Davis/Milne/Betts do, which can be a pretty difficult area to play and your bad games are usually pretty awful. He plays HF and runs through the midfield which is more like Didak. Though he definitely plays well in big games - he is a freak.

I agree with the Cats supporter that he is being wasted as a small forward.

He was AA last year playing mainly in the midfield, yet this year he is playing as a permanent forward pocket and really struggling. He didn't get played on the ball once against the Cats that I could tell. His foot skills are much more damaging up the ground, and he should be playing 65% of his time on ground in the midfield, or wing, and 35% of his time in the forward pocket.

I'd much prefer Davis in the midfield then Didak, as Didak is flat footed at the centre bounce. More importantly Didak's complete softness and unwillingness to get the hard ball, and work defensively is a liability in the midfield. Soft outside receivers should not get the amount of time in the centre square like Didak does.

Davis however doesn't look right at the moment, he has lost his speed, and he looks, and is playing like he was when he hurt his ankle the other year and still played.

I'd also like to see less bombing it in long to Davis when he is outnumbered and expecting him to outmark much bigger opponents. Well, one can hope.
