For a 3rd news outlet: why not the ABC grandstand team? They're one of the most respected teams by those in the know. Especially if we get Gerard Whateley- he could get more circulation through AFL 360 as well. It just pushes the support higher.

Will tweet him now. thanks for the idea

EXCLUSIVE: McCartney defends Bombers

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-02-08/mccartney-backs-bombers

WESTERN Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney says he has been stunned by the drugs controversy that has enveloped the AFL.

"I am shocked," McCartney told AFL.com.au during the Bulldogs' Australia Post Community Camp in the western Victorian town of Hamilton.

"I'm more disappointed, really, because I can just imagine there are so many people out in the wider community that have grown up, like most of us have, loving the game and respecting the people who drive it.

"I think there would be a huge disappointment, but I think it is really important that this gets played out factually and in the context of the law and not too emotively.

"Because I've been fortunate enough to work in AFL football for a long time now, and I can count on one hand the people I've met that I just wasn't sure about their integrity and their motivation.

"So we're talking about a minority. The majority of people in this industry take their jobs so seriously and work so hard to be good for the game and do a good job – that's the disappointing thing.

"But there's a lot to play out I think. I will watch with interest, and you just hope people that you love and respect are never involved in anything like it."

Essendon has been at the centre of the storm since an investigation into the club's sports science methods was announced on Tuesday.

McCartney, who worked at the Bombers as an assistant coach in 2011, hopes the club will not become a scapegoat.

"There's some fantastic people in that footy club," he said.

"I loved the 12 months I had there and built some great relationships with some incredible people, who are good, good men.

"And I think they deserve the opportunity to have things played out fairly and with proper justice and not have it as a witch-hunt.

"There are too many good people in that club for them to be treated the wrong way."

The Bulldogs beefed up their sports science department over the summer by appointing Graham Lowe to the position of high performance manager and also bringing in a new strength and conditioning coach, Andy Barnett.

However, McCartney does not subscribe to the theory that sports science experts are being given too much power over the way clubs are managing their players.

"I haven't encountered any time where one or two people have dictated the program," McCartney said.

"At the three clubs I have worked at, the allocation of more money to the fitness departments emanated from the question: How do we manage our players better?

"So what does management of a player look like? It basically is about creating an environment where players can progress and get as fit and strong as possible to play an incredibly difficult sport.

"It's also about them not getting injuries and not getting to the stage where fatigue stops them performing at their best. That's a very fair situation.

"As a club, you're number one priority are your players – their welfare and their well-being.

"What you'll find, in almost every case, is that the conditioning people, the strength people, the coaching people and the welfare people all sit down together and plan and come up with programs.

"If you have that in place, you rarely get it wrong.

"It's when egos and peoples' ambitions take over the group, that's when you can sometimes get it wrong.

"So I think the disappointment we all feel now will hopefully get dealt with fairly and equitably and we can get on with playing footy.

"Because right now people are probably looking at our industry and saying, 'How many people are in the industry that aren't doing things right?

"But the reality is that the high majority of people work hard and just want to be part of a successful club."

This strikes me as the wrong time and place for such an attitude, given what the team is accused of.

If Geelong is found to be involved in all this, I'll turn my back on them, not express some wacky mass protest of love for a bunch of guys picked by random and injected with stuff I'd run a million miles from.

But it's up to you. If your club has been cheating and you think a mass demonstration of support is the way to go, great.

This is going to get very serious.
Would anyone be open for a massive meet up at the Tullamarine training complex to show how much we still & will always love them?

Of course we would need to find out a day and time they train. The more that agree to come, the better obviously.

I want to go but want to make this a big event!

If we can get a big group to go, maybe we can get it into the papers also ...

Thoughts?

Lets do this! Lets not role over because of this mess! WE ARE ESSENDON! HEAR US ROAR!!

So standing up for your club you love is bad? just shows you are not a true Cats supporter. That is just what you are saying here.

As people who love our club, this is the least we can do. show our support for the club we have grown up to love. It's an invite to people, not a demand. it's up to every individual if they want to follow. This is not a mass protest. It is a show of support, a show of love for the guys associated with our club.

Also, you are a bit late responding to the OP. There has been a change of venue. Things have progressed very well since I posted that.

Stand by your club.

I'm in! I think you will need at least 150 people for it to not look poxy which means you will need at least 250 people who commit because you will get a lot of people saying they will go but not being able to. Hopefully we can get 100's up. I think Thursday night, maybe 6:30pm, this allows enough time to get the news out, enough time for people to get there after work, but also is 24 hours before our NAB cup game. THAT will be a message.

Far too early. We've barely got 50 that have said yes to going. Want to get well over 100. I have only got 1 media person that fully knows about this and is ok to go with it. Need to get another 2 media people. Once I have 3 of them we can then pump this up to get more numbers to attend, then and only then we can fully organise a time. A weekend is person to maximise the potential of people turning up. School finishes just after 3pm, work mostly finishes at 5pm for people.

No where near enough time for people to change into Essendon gear and to get out to windy hill. If we can have it on a Saturday or Sunday for example at like 1pm on a weekend that Essendon are not playing (might be prior to round 1 or if Dons play on a Friday Night or sunday)

Step by step mate. This process the AFL, ACC & ASADA/WADA are taking will take a fair while so it's not lke it has to happen within the next week. We can not rush things and make it pretty iffy. Good things take time. If we are going to do this, we must do it right. Lets cross the t's and dot the i's

How about Jeremy Arnold? Now working with the club and bombertv. Could quite possibly get something out through the club if he's interested.

Just followed and sent him a tweet. Thanks for letting me know about him.

im in as long as its not next saturday, also depending on what you are planning to do will cricket cause issues as i'm not sure of fixtures but i'm pretty sure district could be at windy hill saturday and possibly sundays

That's all well and good and I hope it works, but I just worry that some lesser supporters may get a bit tired of it all and it could all die down. My thoughts were to just get it happening ASAP to support the players, weeks down the track may not be as effective. Anyway, I am happy to go by what you say as you are doing a great job!

220 supporters and counting on the page. Even if we only manage a percentage of them to actually show up we will still get a pretty strong show. Probably best to set a date sometime soon to give plenty of notice?

It's almost as if the things a club stands for run a bit deeper than a potential few bad apples on the staff or team list. The fact that the club has opened up to expose any ****wits who took illegal shit to the wrath of ASADA shows Essendon is willing to do whatever it takes to rid itself of cheats no matter the cost to it's short term reputation.
