Recruiting List Development 2017 - How do we develop our list?

-A Watson back after a year off.

-Bunch of kids who could be anything starting to find form.

....we are all thinking it....arent we?!?!?
A closely contested year...

We should put out our best side that'll give us the best chance to win the game. If our youngsters are included in that (like McGrath and Parish), then so be it. If they aren't? Well there is plenty of development for them to have. Building a winning culture is just as important.

We were in an unprecedented position last year. This year, it's back to normal like every other team.

Langford is the only one that should be playing AFL after the bye IMO. He's developed into a midfielder and we could use him.

Developing youth is all about patience, so we shouldn't rush things.

Francis will be fine. He'll get more games at the back end of the year and next year once he has a full preseason

A closely contested year...
A rediculously talented small defender, a young Italian small forward shredding it....all we need is a high roaming half forward/mid type who's about to become one of the greats of the game :)

The real question is - have we learnt the lessons of 1993!

Kicked goals in every game for the 5 previous.

You asked who I'd drop, that's who I'd drop.

He's been good, he's crafty and he's doing a job but I would suggest that we're better served parking Fantasia and AMT deeper and bringing in someone else that can get up around the wings and is a little bit more of a threat in the air, or both.

I'd hope that Langford, Begley and eventually Laverde give him a nudge out, we're struggling if they don't.

Bombers continue to climb in the ratings.

Now number 1 in attack and 3rd best defence.

Midfield rating also making ground. Bodes well if we can continue to see improvement in midfield.

"Essendon’s midfield has improved a lot over the season, but it was starting from an extremely low base where they were giving up four inside-50s for every three they got themselves. The wet weather game in round 3 in which the Blues dominated inside 50s counted heavily against Essendon early, but irrespective of this the Bombers movement through the middle of the ground has improved in recent weeks. Port Adelaide, their recent victim in this area, still looks good in midfield ball control, but have slipped in the last four weeks."

Do you really think that we're going to play 35-50 goal a year small forwards in the midfield and not include the potential gun mids we've been drafting.
Do you really think we won't play Fantasia particularly and Walla in the midfield? If you don't that is particularly short-sighted. Especially given Worsfold has already demonstrated his intentions with this regard.

In answer to your question, it's not an either/or scenario. We will absolutely play Fantasia and Walla increasingly through the midfield and we will bring young midfielders in to the side. There will be plenty of room for both in our midfield going forward.

I'd be more than happy to have a young mid/forward displace Green in the side going forward, but his current place in the side is not significantly affecting our midfield/team balance.

Find me a 50 goal a year small forward then.

We need to find an inside mid from somewhere. I'd be trialling everyone in the VFL, Begley, Ridley, Francis, Redman. Right now it's the only thing standing between us and a genuine shot at the flag.
Out of all the guys we have I think Laverde is the most likely to become that, a damn shame he's basically had 2 years of development opportunities taken away.

Kobe Mutch is tracking well too. Redman and Ridley are more outside for me.

Redman is as tough as nails. Just a matter of getting him bigger and stronger before he's an inside mid IMO

Yeah, Redman definitely doesn't shirk a contest.

He runs in straight lines when he needs to and has a bit of agro. I still see him as a winger though but time will tell.

Clarke is another that likes to get in the face of the opposition.

Agreed. I don't doubt Redman's toughness but from what I've seen he much more suited to playing on the outside.

Recently, I discussed how Collingwood’s recruits and draftees are going. In today’s article, I am moving on to look at how Essendon’s recruits and draftees are travelling 11 rounds into the season.

Josh Green – delisted free agent from Brisbane
Green was delisted by the Lions last season after struggling with injuries and form, but has seamlessly slotted into the Bombers line-up. He has played all but two games this season, which he missed with a hamstring injury, and has collected 115 disposals and 12 goals playing in the forward line. The 24-year-old certainly looks like being an important part of the Bombers future.

James Stewart – traded from GWS for Pick 77
Stewart, traded to the Bombers after playing only 18 games in four years at the Giants, has been solid in 2017. He started the year in the VFL, kicking eight goals in four games. Since coming into the senior team, he has played six games and kicked nine majors in that time.

Andrew McGrath – Pick 1, 2016 AFL Draft
McGrath received high interest from the Giants, with him being the reason for GWS trading up the draft order. However, the Bombers took him with pick one. He has so far been impressive, averaging 19.4 disposals and slotting a major. He certainly looks like a star of the future.

Jordan Ridley – Pick 22, 2016 AFL Draft
Ridley has struggled to get out on the field this year, with a stress fracture in his foot keeping him out for a large chunk of the season. He has looked promising in his last two games, but doesn’t look like making a debut this year.

Josh Begley – Pick 31, 2016 AFL Draft
Begley has looked nice at VFL level, playing ten games and slotting 14 majors. He is one who can slot in as a winger and small forward in the Essendon line-up in the future and will be hoping for a debut later this year or early next year.

Kobe Mutch – Pick 42, 2016 AFL Draft
Mutch is looking like a classy player in the VFL in 2017, being named in the best twice and kicking two goals in nine games. He’s developing nicely in his first year on an AFL list.

Dylan Clarke – Pick 63, 2016 AFL Draft
Clarke, the brother of North Melbourne midfielder Ryan, has looked nice this year, playing ten games in the VFL, kicking two goals, and being named in the best once playing as a midfielder. He will be wanting to push for a debut later this year or early next year.

Sam Draper – Pick 1, 2016 AFL Rookie Draft
Draper has been a quality player in the VFL this year, averaging 16.5 hit outs per game. He is a player who can develop to be Essendon’s number one ruckman in a few years.

Given how many quality ruckmen have come through the rookie draft, such as Aaron Sandilands, Dean Cox, and Majak Daw – the latter yet to take advantage of his potential – history is on Draper’s side to become a quality ruckman.

Ben McNiece – Category B Rookie, 2016
McNiece has looked nice this year, playing off half-back after being recruited as Category B Rookie from Essendon’s VFL side. He made his debut in Round 5, playing two games and averaging 12.5 disposals.

There you go, Essendon’s recruits and draftees so far. Comment your thoughts so far, and keep an eye out for the Fremantle article.

If Ridley builds on his current form in the VFL he will definitely make a debut this year. Most likely when James Kelly gets a rest which might be the game against GCS at Metricon in round 22 or round 17 against St Kilda as it would be coming off 2 consecutive 6 day breaks.

Depends on the finals situation for mine.

Injuries aside I would prefer stability rather than giving kids a run.

For the record, that has to be the worst write up I have read.

It's like a child wrote it.

Reading that and having seen them live 4 times this year, confident we will secure 4+ AFL standard players which, history suggests will go a long way to giving us a lwg up pushing for #17
