If they say primarily premierships are won with more experienced and age teams, then getting experience even as depth for nothing in terms of trades or picks then it's probably worth doing so then getting a kid in a draft later into it that may or may not be good during that time of contention and Port must be in contention over this next few years. Nothing else and no rebuilds.

This is where critical thinking needs to be applied

It’s not just experienced players that are crucial, otherwise any team could add cheap experienced players.

It’s having the core of your team featuring a bunch of experienced players.

Could we at least try and target a half decent player though. Experience and age is one thing but you don’t just get a shit player who is 27 for the sake of filling list spots and making the team a bit older.

Or is the best we can do target SANFL level players to fill the experience gaps.

That’s fine if so, just hope we are paying him scraps on the dollar and not actually having to offer half decent coin to bring him across.

We're talking about quite possibly the last spot on the list. The idea is to get someone in that space who is a break glass option for AFL, but someone who has enough experience who can be of value to helping the younger players develop in the SANFL.

I'd be cracking up if they were targeting him with the intention of playing him 10+ games at AFL level, having a reasonable impact on the season. But for the role they're targeting him for, this is fine.

Sounds like Atkins will have a coaching role at the club next year.
Seems like a bit of a tactic we've employed over the years - pick up a player cheap and give him a season or two as a reserve/SANFL with a few AFL games. Then straight into a coaching role.

Sutcliff and Goldsack the other ones.

Because i know he will be the next goldsack and somehow end up as one of our line coaches in a couple of years.
You know do you?

The fact that we even took him, suggests that he has something to offer. Because it clearly isn’t on field.

I’d be concerned if he’s Carr’s senior assistant sure. But if he’s starting out in a development role, then he’s worth a crack.

you could be right, i just dont like the idea of always bringing in former players.

Lobe, sutfliffe ect

How can you say that?
Ken is gone next year and Carr will get rid of all the trash and she’ll be Apples again.
Well according to what I read on here.

Yeah I'm with you. I want to see us rolling alone with the same crew to see if it'll work out in the end.

Atkins has been here one year. Goldsack was what a sanfl top up player for a season who never played a game?

Do you see me calling for us to not have any experienced players on the list? My argument is against having shit experienced players on the list. Jacob Wehr is a shit experienced player. So are Atkins, Finlayson, Burton, Mead, McEntee. And I have too much respect for Travis Boak to call him 'shit' but it's clear that his time has come. **** them all off.
We'll disagree on Wehr

But exactly how do you propose we get good quality experience players for cheap whilst telling them that if injuries hit, they could play max 10 games but otherwise they're looking at 2 games? Because that's what we're doing with Wehr. He's taking up the last list on the spot.

He's a far better kick than Atkins and is coming from a good culture at Giants. He's not a household name, doesn't mean he's shit.

Worst take possibly ever. The guy is FAST and his turning circle is the least of his problems.

Its like Jones can 'twist' enough to get past someone while mostly straight lining at speed but turning/serious change of direction is another matter. Agree though the overwhelming issue is the one between his brain and his hands/feet.

With us needing to build depth. Here’s a list of YOUNG out of contract players that could fill holes. If any of the players are delisted I would jump at them. But most would be cheap trade prospects.
Verrall- used as 2nd ruck in Melbourne’s VFL behind Tom Campbell.
Lemmey
Keeler
Jack Delean
Malcom Rosas
Luke Beecken
Loch Rowlinson actually no nothing about this kid.
Bodie Ryan, Sam Butler, Jai Serong. These 3 all out of contract and strong performers for Box Hill who are top of the VFL.

I’d be enquiring about Rosas & Davies from from the Suns, who are an automatic upgrade on at least a dozen deadwood players we are currently carrying on our list.

Rosas & Verrall will be the two priorities for me.

Keeler most likely will sign on with the Saints

It’s good to delist all these rubbish players but the only problem is who do you replace them with especially as we have bugger all picks.
Much like a verge pick up, rubbish pilled up out the front then 6 months later another pile of the same type of rubbish.

Port have poor depth, lots of players out of contract, lack of draft picks in a poor draft...for me taking wehr for nothing is a no brainer. Its a small win. Its another player on the list with a purpose and capable of playing afl standard football. I still think Port should have drafted more players in last year's deep draft pool but thats done.
