Tom Morris reporting decision isn’t based purely on the $, he’s interested in success, on and off field (may have misheard off field part). He wants to know the direction of the Saints and if that will be achievable under Ross. Decision likely end of year.
Saints need to bite the bullet and sack Lyon

Get Buckley Longmire etc

Surely if he has put the decision off until the end of the year that means he is most likely leaving the Saints. I am still fairly sure he will go to Port. Managers always say it's not about the money.

I think if we are to miss on NWM, we should look to bring in one of the following two players to help sure up our midfield.
Tom Powell - Avg 23.7 Disposals, 7.3 Contested, 4.8 Tackles - can also go forward and kick a goal when needed
or
Tom Sparrow - Avg 12.9 Disposals, 4.6 Contested, 4.3 Talks - can also go forward and kick a goal when needed.
Both out of contract in 2026, Sparrow would be a RFA and probably cheaper. We could convince them to come with the promise of more midfield time that they are currently getting which i think both would complement our current outfit.
The other option would be Deven Roberston from Brisbane - there's something about him and I reckon he could be a very good player if he gets a consistent run at it.

From there, I think we should sign Draper, not that I think he offers a heap more around the ground then ROB, just a bit more Dynamic, he can at least go forward and slot a goal, which is a luxury late in games from a Ruckman, he is also 3 years younger and as we know with the Crows they won't draft and build a Ruck, they will typically bring in a ready-made one when possible.

We also need two more positions, one being a lockdown defender because other than Butts the rest of Key Defenders prefer to play off their man and be more intercepting - we are much better structurally with Butts in the team then the other two because one forward is always accounted for when everyone else is running off their man trying to intercept. And then also a pure small forward, there are not many these days that aren't being turned into Hybrid Midfielders as well which is why I would look at Malcolm Rosas again at the Suns, they have a lot more talent coming in which means some players will get squeezed, we were interested in him last time he was out of contract and I am hoping we have kept in touch with them throughout.

Pure sm

Agree on another midfield dimension and Roberston is interesting. Draper chase is a given.

Agree on a small forward need, but lock down defender we have in Butts and Muz.

We also need another marking forward

We don't need more soldiers like those named above, we need top end actual difference makers.

Draper off a relatively serious injury is also a risk and I'm not convinced he'll be the difference maker we need even if fully fit given the chunk of salary cap he will no doubt want.

Indeed. As I have said for a while, we should only trade in someone now if they replace someone in the best 23, a la last year. Improving the depth is a second-order issue.

We don't need a difference maker ruck - we need someone who can tap it down our throats rather than our mids running to the tap. Is Draper that guy, maybe, maybe not - does he offer us a bit more than ROB does - I believe so.

As for the others, safe to say Dawson wasn't considered a difference maker when we traded for him, but ensuring we played him to his absolute potential has made him one of the best players in the comp.

The only current different maker available in FA is Bont, and I hope we have at least called his manager - but other than that, there isn't much but playing blokes in the right and their preferred position may be difference between being a role player and being a star.

In saying that, I have no issue trading 2FRP's for NWM because he is a star, but I am not convinced that is going to be enough with this draft.

Powell would be the only one listed there I would be interested in. Is tracking to be a solid mid. Always handy to have another genuine mid in the rotation, helps free up Dawson and Rankine so they can play more forward

Would depend on what we would need to give up to get him though, not sure what he would be worth in a trade.

Powell is handy mid, no more no less, same applies to Sparrow, neither are even close to the best mids in their current teams. Robertson is a break glass in emergency type mid at the Lions to get a game. Much sooner put time into Draper, Edwards, Dowling etc and see what they've got than invest in more soldiers.

You obviously rate Draper's tap work way way higher than me.

Should put us in the pole position - if that is his true priority. Cant see St Kilda or Port being anywhere near it for some time.

I presume he sees Port as a team that has been successful recently and has a bunch of mates playing in it. He'll think they have a great chance of success going forward, especially if he adds his talents there.

I don’t think anybody would disagree with this, but we’d be paying Draper far more than what is needed for this output.

Was thinking on the weekend if putting a deal in front of Michael Frederick to come home a year before his deal is due to expire at Freo in 2026 could be the go?

The team desperately needs front half speed and he’d certainly provide that, would be disappointed if they haven’t been looking into it.

I’d take him if he can be more consistent than Pedlar
