NWM should absolutely want to stay at the Saints, or at the very least be super conflicted about leaving. But he won't and shouldn't sacrifice a single dollar to do it.

If St Kilda want him then IMO he's there for the taking. And there'll be no-one else to blame but themselves if they lose him.

All we are offering is market value $$ and years for a player of his status over then next decade. If we are still the best offer by the trade period then the Saints have massively failed.

Is he worth what we are probably going to pay him? No.
I dont think he is garbage but this is the sticking point for me

Plus his achilles - sure surgery and rest is now much more refined and football clubs are about the best medical you can get . But there is always the ticking time bomb with him ( and sure you could say that about any footballer)

But the position he plays and the cost to get him here leaves me cold

I disagree with this...

He's no AA Ruckman, but
Is he better than what we have? Maybe.
Does he offer more than what we have? Yes.
Could he be better with a better team around him? Probably.
Is he worth what we are probably going to pay him? No.
Where's the 'Will the Draper we're getting be the same Draper post his quite serious injury option'?

Won't cost draft capital so you could justify the price a bit more due to that. If we got Marshall he would probably cost similar plus our first rounder. Plus draper is 26 compared to Marshall and ROB at 29.

No. The price is the sticking point. $900k for a forward pocket?

Never mentioned Marshall

A few players equal or better from achilles : Roughead & Rocca - arguement could even be made about Comben as well.
While I don't agree with people calling him rubbish in their posts, I do question if it is worth the risk.

How is he a forward pocket? He would be playing as a key forward. And I mentioned Marshall because he's another ruck linked to us.
43 goals in 78 games says he isnt a KPF

Again I dont care about Marshall and I never mentioned him

Umm him being over 200cm says hes is a KPF not a forward pocket....They only just started playing him as a key forward in the last year. He kicked 7 goals in 5 games this year before he got injured and that was while playing 2nd ruck.

Marshall is the one i would target.

The difference between ROB playing for his spot and comfortable ROB is chalk and cheese.

If he played like he has been recently he’d never be a whipping boy of this board.

It’s incredibly frustrating

Be great if we could just offer him a rolling 1 year contract with triggers needed to be hit. Pay him well, no problem, but keep him on edge and he will play accordingly.

I was thinking 6 weeks

I think with McAndrew signing on we are closer to signing Rob. I take the speculation of interest from other clubs as nothing more than his manager trying to get a third year, which makes sense.

Will probably be a 2 year with a trigger contract and he will sign on.

Which will mean no Draper, which as much as I think we can do better than Rob, just not keen to pay 900k to find out unless it is Max Gawn.

Someone will offer him better than that sadly

We'll either need to give him a 3 year deal on decent money or part ways

probably, but if the rolling yearly contract was say $600K per year, it 'might??' be enough to make it worth his while and keep him on enough edge to play well each week....

I've never quite understood this opinion. I've never thought it was an issue of ROB not trying hard enough. He just has very very little talent, and whether he marks it or kicks it properly is always a flip of the coin. Sometimes he has a good run, sometimes he doesn't.

ROB is fine. He has his limitations but he rarely gets smashed in the ruck. He also can ruck 90% TOG and is incredibly durable. It’s pretty amazing he’s carried our ruck division for what, 6 years? With essentially zero support.

So he can’t kick… he knows it and the team knows it and we adjust.

I’d rather we keep him for another 3 years and instead grab either a ruck in the draft or someone 2-3 years in the system to take over when they time is ready.

Was it Goad NM took in the Curtin draft? Someone like that.

Not sure Draper is better than ROB, especially after injury, but sure will cost more.

It doesn't take talent to show effort, his endurance has always been his advantage over other ruckman which he is using again by applying more pressure as he is covering the ground and has even laid strong tackles.
