I'm utterly unconvinced there's a ruckman on the market who is a better player than ROB. Re-sign him for the 3 years he wants.

That'd be insane. As soon as he's signed, he's going to revert to the performances that we saw in 2023 & 2024. He's only putting in because he's playing for a contract. The last thing we need is him returning to a safe space and phoning in his performances. But you're right, the current version ie contract year version, is a very handy component of our side. It's a shame that as soon as he's signed, he'll turn to crap again.

It does seems when we drop a player to the rookie list we are using it as a safety net.

You need depth to be a real contender but no player outside your top 28 or so is going to make much difference. That gives you your best 23 and some cover for certain positions. You hope from the rest of your list during the season some start to push up.There is always the mid season draft as well.
I don't know about "safety net" - it's more of a holding pen. We shift contracted players there, freeing up a position on the senior list, which we can use at the trade table or on draft night.

I don't think we've moved too many (any?) players to the rookie list who were out of contract.

Good.

Great player, but the coin he wants is too much.

Would

$1.2 m plus for that role? That is Blue Chip midfield money IMO.

Our issue is that we play Laird/Smithers in those attacking defensive roles.

Michalanney could be the "bang for buck" answer in that role.

Or give Edwards a go.

Worrell is also pretty attacking.

If we were to get Nas, would hope he becomes a Blue Chip mid.
Lets be honest, Max could play on ball, he can play up forward and he most certainly can play down back. He is such a smart player, has great skills by hand and foot and is just so composed. What would be great to learn is if Edwards can play Max's role in defence and as such allowing us to try Max through the middle or across half forward, with the luxury of knowing he can go back and do anything needed with class.

Looking unlikely we get NWM

The ruck situation with the lowball to ROB indicates I think Draper is headed our way

Leaves us with 3 years of 1st round pick to play with

Do we trade up and chase a pick to net Dyson Sharp? Richmond and Essendon most likely who we would be looking to deal with

I would:

'25 + '26 1st rounders > Essendon = draft Sharp

'26 2nd rounder + mix of pick swaps = Liam Ryan ( he would be the cream on top of our forward line)

enquire with Hawthorn on what they want for Will McCabe and get it done of not huge overs, if that Carlton pick keeps falling then '25 + '26 + '27 1st's for say pick 5 and McCabe = Sharp and McCabe - takes out the draft but FA is where we would need to attack

Doubt that will be the case now we have what looks a legitimate back up in McAndrew.

He knows that he has multiple months of average performances before getting dropped. And although Strachan was clearly poor last year, his previous two sets of 2 games were ok.

McAndrews's significantly taller than Strachan and heavier re AFL rucks.

See Bergman staying at Port - ensures they won’t have the draft capital to get Sharp which is nice. I feel if he goes to Victoria or WA more likely to come back to us than them

Hopefully we can trade up for him although that seems unlikely
Wonder if that means NWM is more likely to stay at the Saints if Viva la Mattner's post is anything to go by (with us looking unlikely). Don't see how Port afford NWM without losing someone of value.

I have heard unlikely , but the unexpected Bergman news suddenly leaves the door ever so slightly ajar

They could afford him, they just dont have the draft capital to get him.

I don't know for sure, it's purely 3rd hand information but I believe Butters is out at the end of this year which would give Port significant draft capital.

Surely we look at trying to move up to get Sharp? Gives us the ability draft a top prospect in the midfield?
Dont Mention The SANFL Dont Mention SANFL for 2 YEARS DONT Mention AGGGHHHH

Port made the claim they could still find a way to land NWM.

Not sure how without a 1st rounder.

I don’t think it matters if McAndrew is a bit better than Strachan. He’s our designated backup ruck and ROB is our primary and in the leadership group. We are not quick to pull the trigger on senior players that are out of form or contributing well below their best. We ascribe equal value to experience and continuity that we do actual game day output. ROB will know he has a long runway of below par form before being being considered at selection.
