It doesn't matter, if you're not playing good footy at the time opportunities arise

Edwards season fell away as the season progressed

This is such a flawed mindset when it comes to player development.

1st-4th year players will not be consistent across an entire season. Their bodies are simply not conditioned to be able to withstand the rigours of playing against men for 18-23 weeks in a row at this point in their development.

If you think a player has the ability to be a best 23 player once they have developed, then they need to be given opportunities. It is a balancing act of not exposing players too early, but also giving them time to rise to the level. However, if you’re expectation is that they be one of the best players in the 2s consistently across the season so that IF an injury arises they are ready to go, then that is a completely unrealistic expectation.

We saw with Curtin this year, that he had some quiet games, but by backing him in, and allowing him the time to find his feet and adjust to the level, he got better and better. We also saw that he wasn’t able to maintain that level across an entire season. However, in 2-3 years time when he has fully matured, we’ll see the benefits of giving him games now. Curtin did not consistently dominate SANFL before getting his opportunity, as you seem to expect Edwards too.

We should be giving him opportunities when he’s in form, not demanding that he be in form when an injury happens.

Given games would be the operative word ......hasn't deserved games
You are just a terrible judge.

Edwards had good sanfl form & certainly played better than Murphy when he was brought back in several times.

You're the one that people should be questioning what games you were watching!!!!
C'mon.

Edwards had a nice patch around rounds six to nine, and a couple of very good games around round 15.

But each time, Smith was doing more.

Smith wasn't our problem, and Edwards was pretty good in the SANFL but didn't demand selection.

Hopefully he heads into this year with a massive offseason so he's got more strength over the ball - he's still naturally quite outside in the games I watched.

Care to show me where I mentioned Smith in the discussion because I wasn't aware I had?

Bit hard to play inside the contest across half back!!!!

Better form... debatable.

Much better form.... no.
Mmmm? ......you've gone from "you're an embarrassment" ......to now saying it's debatable

Way to go to stick to your POV .....what was it, 20 minutes B4 flipping

OK .....so it was Murphy versus Edwards for a HBF role (shakes head) .....strange argument

Because he was playing vastly better.

Edwards had a couple of good games, but Smith had much better form when the opportunity presented.
I wouldn't say Smith was playing "vastly better" at all.

He was playing fine, but we all knew Smith was going to play well in the SANFL. Edwards was killing it and it was the perfect opportunity to give him a run at AFL, but went with a guy whose best was well and truly past him. That's the issue. Smith wasn't completely terrible when he played, but he didn't really improve the side either, and those games could've/should've been given to a a younger guy to boost his development.

Your credibility is shot so you're going for pot shots.

Good stuff.
Credibility, if you must know, is being "proven wrong" over time ......why don't you repost any of my posts where I've been proven wrong"

Great response though .... when you have nothing to say .....debating isn't your strong point .....at least Trade Radio starts tomorrow, so you'll have some fresh opinions to rehash

You directly responded to Wayne who was discussing Smith and Edwards.
Maybe go check Charlie Edwards 2024 SANFL form when he played mostly midfield before he was banished to half back and deeper in 2025. Hell his 1st ever game he notched up 6 clearances and averaged 86% disposal efficiency inside the contest across the year. You can defend the club all you like but our development of players drafted as midfielders is abysmal in the last decade or so it's glaringly obvious..

I love how youre pinning quotes on me that I've not said.

I havent listened to 1 second of trade radio, are you struggling to keep up old boy ?? Maybe go back and think about who and what you are quoting.

At last some proper use of a counter argument ......much better than many of the rebuttals posted

Well argued

I find it interesting, that each week, the discussion around a kid not getting a rightful go, oscillates between Nankervis, Dowling, and Edwards
I find it incredibly strange that people would see Edwards as getting priority for a game over Nankervis or Dowling .....as you say, his later season form did not warrant being gifted games

The good thing is the temptation to play Smith or Murphy is no longer a problem.

If Nicks doesn’t have the balls play the young players next year, it will be his last.
Our only hope is for list management to keep getting rid of the shit experience so Nicks has no choice. He simply doesn't do it on his own accord.

And we are grateful for that small mercy.
Now we just need Nicks to have his day off on selection night & game day.

He can manage the other days.

He’s a relatively high draft pick, who has shown promise at various stages. He should have been given opportunities when he was in form.
