The 2 Queensland sides both have stacked midfields.

Will be a surprise if both are not top 4, given decent all over the field.

How long are they going to get rhe massive benefit of their academy players.
Plus the side benefit of the value of draft picks being lower to then

They could offer so much for Trac as they knew the would get so much talent cheap anyway - the same trade price would have been giving up a lot more “value” if we were to give the same

Bris considered a 2nd round pick worthless sonl only a way overs trade would be considered by them but irresponsible for us

Huge benefits not only in the access to players but the advantages it gives them in the value of currency in the usual trading game

All fair and equitable too according to the AFL.

Yes, the AFL have created a 2 tier trade pick currency for the haves & have nots... which is why the Ah Chee trade broke down.

In reality that last trade period with both those examples should be the buddy franklin to COLA moment

Buddy not only killed COLA but they overcorrected banning them from trades or something if I remember vaguely right

Obviously there was already wheels in motion to alter academies but this should have accelerated/intensified it further

Being able to get premium talent for bundles of picks has been a disaster. Seems largely corrected now, but the damage over the last few years is severe. That said, the salary cap is meant to equalise list quality. And yet we got outbid by Suns for Petracca and Lions for Draper.

Never really understood why the AFL was so angry with Buddy to Swans, what’s it to them? I know it’s not what they wanted to happen, but there was nothing even remotely smelly about it. At the time everyone thought it was an absurdly long and expensive deal, so no covert shenanigans or paper bags. It’s then up to the Swans to manage their cap, that was provided to them and audited yearly by the AFL.

It surprises me that the AFL penalising them for doing absolutely nothing wrong wasn’t a bigger story than it was. Removing COLA sure, that had been an argument for a while. But the extra yard they went, to ban trades and FA acquisition for a year or 2, was absolutely outrageous. What rule did they breach?

They have the AFL media in their pocket and everyone was happy to see a competitor penalised

Yeah it was odd
A bit of talk about the fairness of the ban but more background noise tha dissent

I guess everyone was just so relieved COLA was gone they didn’t care about the rest

Compliant media I'd suggest. The AFL would have made it clear that there's no story in the unjust punishment for doing nothing other than playing by their own rules.

Looking at a couple of articles at the time, the AFL investigated to ensure there weren’t any outside cap shenanigans. Swans RFA contract blew away what both GWS and Hawks would pay. How much more did the AFL think they needed to pay under the table?

Such a bloody minded and incompetent organisation.

Because they wanted him at the Giants to help sell tickets and memberships, propel them deep into the finals, and bump TV ratings, and he effectively spurned the AFL to take the Sydney offer.

Don't know about you, but I've never known upper management or C suite suits to take rejection very well.

There has been a backlash already (and already some tinkering) and it will get worse if (when?) they are too dominant. It will take an Eddie McGuire type of figure to get cranky on behalf of the Victorian footy establishment, and the AFL will then decide to do a bit more to reduce the torrent of cheap talent flowing into nsw and qld clubs.

Outbid in terms of $ or picks?

I don't think we really wanted Draper, he was part of the AhChee play IMO.

Trac was never coming here because we didn’t have the picks.

These corrections will take 10 years to fix, they've got several top 10 players for nothing on the roster now.

I think it was a case of them realising they fcuked up with the COLA allowance, and instead of accepting accountability, they blamed sydney.

Don’t delude yourself, we wanted both of those players. Nothing wrong with not overpaying, I’m not criticising the club at all. Reality is that both those players chose other clubs. Numerous factors are involved, but based on the amount of high end talent, we should have been able to outbid both in terms of $.

I'm thinking there's a chance .....if he wants to play midfield, BRIS just keeps bringing Mids in .....role might entice

Foot has been the more impressive of the 2 going by bigmans reports, but i cant help but think we should have gone with someone else.

I guess if hes playing for the last spot on the list then it doesn't mean much, but still.
Correct , we have an abundance of HBF

Hollands would’ve been the better option if we could’ve swayed him

I'm sure we could have, we didn't want to.

Personally, I would have much preferred that too.

Now, I think we're better holding the spot for the MSD.

I think the best chance of a diamond in the rough is to wait until MSD, but even then, you need to be in the bottom few. I don’t see us being there. But I wouldn’t waste a list spot just to fill it up, particularly on a mid-age player. Add the available cap space to further frontload someone or keep it on case we want to delist a player with a year to run come the end of the season.
