It's certainly an interesting team. Some of those players were great in their prime, but were well past their prime when they left (or were pushed out of) the Crows. Betts, Maric, Welsh & Crouch didn't achieve a lot after leaving Adelaide. Bock spent most of his time at GC on the injury list.

Others, on the other hand, hurt a LOT more - and had their best years after their Adelaide departures.

Maric's contribution once moving on is underrated. He was part of Richmond's rise and was vice-captain in 2015, playing 80 games in total

Can we count Hodges

Didnt play a game for Power but We did trade him there after he came back to us for year in 1996.
Who would he displace from that forward line? I don't see any players there who wouldn't be picked ahead of him.

Yes, he's eligible... but I can't see a position for him in that team.

I've been thinking about the best side that we left behind, those players that chose to leave for another club and those we pushed out for one reason or another.

Not surprisingly, it's a cracking team

B: Jake Lever, Phil Davis, Sean Wellman

HB: Martin Mattner, Nathan Bock, Brenton Sanderson

C: Bernie Vince, Patrick Dangerfield, Kane Johnson

HF Kurt Tippett, Jason McCartney, Eddie Betts

F: Tyson Stengle, Tony Modra, Charlie Cameron

R: Shaun Rehn, Tyson Stengelin, Jarrod Lyons

I: Brad Crouch, Ricky Henderson, Ivan Maric, Billy Frampton, Scott Welsh

There are 8 players who went on to win a flag (or two for Charlie) at their new club and one player who was very unlucky

Who have I overlooked?
Kane Johnson - quality ball user he was. Gets in ahead of Lyons to be on ball

The acquired team?

B: S Stevens Bassett Massie
HB: Torney Caven Keane
C: Seedsman Dawson Ah Chee
HF: Lynch Carey Jarman
F: Rankine Welsh Betts
Fol: Jacobs McLeod McGuiness
Int from: Clarke Jenkins Gibbs S Thompson ANB Stengle B James

Carey, Jarman, Betts and Rankine is a single forwardline...

Got to find a spot for Matthew Robran and Matt Connell was everyone's punching bag but played in both flags and played nearly 100 games for us

James is an interesting selection, people do tend to forget how good he was.

Gibbs needs to be deleted from all Crows posts. ;)

Cummins, Peatling and Keays.

Are you kiding?

I think you have forgotten the star he was.

McCartney, Frampton, Welsh.

Id have him before any of them. Injuries crippled him in 1991-1993. Thyen Mods took over Once he got his body right again he went back to SANFL kicking 100 multiple times from 1994-1996. I aam not a Port supporter by any stretch but the guy was a gun.

He was a gun at SANFL level, who never quite managed to translate that to AFL level.

Seriously, who would he replace in that forward line? Modra is the first player picked in that entire team. Loathe him as I do for what he did when leaving, but the pond scum's AFL achievements shit all over Hodges'. Gunston, Betts & Cameron all have him covered by 2 laps of the Flemington Racecourse, not just the straight.

Tony Hall, Greg Anderson, Matthew Robran,

Mitch McGovern?

Maybe in the catergory of "showing promise" with us but lost his way after??

I was a massive fan and I stand by today that had Modra not come along he would have been a multiple 100 goal forward for the Crows and he would be in any side in the competition in the 90s. Every bit as good as any of the best forwards in History. The dude was a monster. He ripped games apart at AFL level including a future grand final team in the same year.

Talking about Oliver and Petracca - both on huge long term contracts (Olivers partly paid by dees) would we consider:

Patrick Cripps - just turned 31. Dual b/low medalist. Contract ends 2027 google saying only 850k ish

Kingy and Kane saying he could likely be offered up under a new coach reset which is now fait accompli similar to King at Dees getting rid of Pets, May and Oliver

They mentioned Cripps back to WA but Freo dont need him and Weagles are years off success. Cripps has played 4 finals in his whole career and I imagine would value finals

Assuming he becomes only a part of our midfield rotation - doesnt need to be a clear number one - would we offer a 2+1 type deal inc possibly bringing him in as an Assistant/Development coach when his 2 or 3 years playing time is up?
We have no doubt seen the best of him - but we all thought the same about Petracca who is less than a year younger - do we target him? Berry leaves for a second rounder under this scenario - perhaps to Blues even. Cripps thrown into the potential target mix of Bailey, Chandler and Swallow but a midfield rotation of:

Dawson, Rankine, Cripps, Rachele, Soligo, Curtin, Draper and Bailey (Peatling, Edwards etc) - STRIKE ME PINK

Demons didn’t want Petracca to go, he was never a force out like Oliver. They were only letting him go for a huge bounty, which eliminated us. Same as the Essendon situation with Merrett. Dees were just more pragmatic, Dons are a rabble.

Some absolute, Lions-fed garbage in that article.

“Brisbane's six-year offer to retain Bailey is understood to be financially less than Adelaide's, but the Lions have alluded to rival clubs that they would be capable of matching a rival free agency bid for the forward and forcing a trade.”

If they have the coin and are willing to spend it on him, why not offer him that much now? Pure spin.

That’s exactly what we said with Danger and then Crouch. ‘We have the space to match, we’ll wait and see what comes in’.

They’ll offer what they think they can and of course they’re going to let clubs know they need to blow them out of the water. It’s not spin, it’s strategy and it’s real. If they get adequate AFL compo, they walk away. If they don’t, they match and force a trade.

I like the optimism but

Cripps is done and zero chance he comes to Adelaide. The game has past that type of player by anyway.

Dawson is gun but I think in the next 12 months he will become more a permanent defender. He has carried this team and I worry about his body being able to play if midfield minutes into his 30's.

We need Rachele and Rankine up forward or we recruit more dynamic forwards. Bailey will be more up forward. Once Tex retires we will reshape the forward line to be more like what the top teams have.

I haven't put a line through Draper but he is about to play his 6th straight SANFL game. The club must think he is miles off.

Anyway I hope you are right.
