Yep.

We have the luxury of hindsight, now. McAndrew has certainly taken the next step, which we weren't certain about.

The club has clearly seen the ruck as the least important position to spend draft picks and trade capital on. Ruck succession plan has been a back-burner thing.

With Thilly and recently Turray both having the ability to relief ruck. And McAndrew doing well against Xerri we seem to have a succession plan.

I have the feeling we all hope ROB is break glass option. I hope we skimped on $$ for that last year though.

I will always wonder if we would have caved into a 3 year deal if we knew the ruck rules were about to change.

Maybe we are in a position to look at a McAndrew understudy in case of injury or illness?
Hindsight has nothing to do with it, there was enough noise that the ruck rules were going to change.

As for the club seeing the ruck as the least important position is not an excuse to give ROB 3 years, it’s the stupid list position that made it a necessity to give ROB 3 years, we felt we had no choice, McAndrew hadn’t played a game for us yet.

We are just lucky Strachan got injured and McAndrew was overlooked by every club and was lining up to play for Norwood.

The problem is that if we select someone for 6 months that puts pressure on the coaches to select him. Which would mean that if an opportunity arises, instead of selecting Dowling or Edwards who are starved of opportunity at the moment, we’d be giving games to a player who is unlikely to progress.

Selecting him would also signal that we put him ahead of Dowling or Edwards on the depth chart, which is concerning.
Drury has probably been in as good of form as the other 2 in his time here, and is only marginally older

Hindsight's a wonderful thing. Pity we didn't know the AFL were going to change the rules, completely neutering ROB's game, when signing that contract.
Bullshit. There was noise it was changing. Given McAndrew hadn’t played a game for us yet, we were always going to re-sign ROB.

I would think it’s unlikely that Tasmania would be interested in him. He’ll be 32 by then and the game appears to be moving past a player of his type.

ROB cant run and jump really which makes him weak at centre bounces and he hasn’t got the versatility to play forward.

If they are in the market for a veteran ruck I would imagine Marshall, who comes out of contract at the end of 2027, would be higher up their list. Alternatively, if they’re looking at who might be on the way out, Ladhams also comes out of contract in 2027 and has been putting up some big numbers in the VFL. He’s also younger and more athletic.

I doubt Tasmania are going to be looking to take on an inflated contract that they’ll have to trade for, when those two names will probably be available as free agents.

He can be their Jonathan Giles

Unless McAndrew or Murray get injured, I think Rob has played his last AFL game. Cannot see any other club being interested in him with a trade.
I kind of disagree.

He's a mature warm body who can immediately step into a club. We're seeing with Richmond, WCE, Essendon and others how thin the ruck depth is.

He's probably still in the top 25 or 30 ruckman in the league and that probably finds him a spot somewhere. Maybe not many games, but a list spot.
I just wonder if Toby Greene will leave, might not want to go to Victoria could be the sneakiest addition for us. Ontop of priority’s still.
He does want to go to Victoria. He's literally said that in the media already - the only question is when.

RoB was always shit in CBA with or without the new ruck rule but was he was somewhat useful around the ground in stoppage. Now he is shit in both. Giving him 3 instead of 2 years was always a big risk but apparently McAndrew gave him credit for his development and rise so money well spent lol.

You can pretty much guarantee Mc Andrew or Murray will get injured, but doesn't Moose come in instead?

Apologies for the self-promotion, but some here might be interested in this piece I published today: https://www.onepercenters.net.au/p/beyond-the-draft-board-how-lists
I enjoyed it - thank you

Poor Murphy

“The way I describe it is,” says Alex, “is we try to make all our subjective measures objective. So if we’re watching tape, we’re identifying and recording a lot of that information through metrics we like to follow in terms of how a kid plays and some of these fundamental skill sets, and how they wash out at the end of the year. It’s a lot of work, but at the end of the day, we can objectify a lot of our information and generate a final grade and rating off the back of that.” Alex isn’t kidding when he says it’s a lot of work.
Alex is on fire !

I know baseball uses the 5 attributes guide

In baseball, the "5 attributes" (commonly known as the 5 Tools) refer to the core skills scouts use to evaluate position players: hitting for average, hitting for power, running speed, throwing and fielding ability
Then there are the ones mentioned - the drive the desire the willingness to work harder

NBA uses a similar model Shooting, Ball Handling, Athleticism, Defense, and Basketball IQ

For me Aussie Rules players need to be proficient in kicking ( both feet most important ) Handballing under pressure , Handling ie fumble count , ability to evade and escape a tackle and ''finding the football ' - this doesnt mean speed - it can - but the ability to be where the ball is going to be - this highlights an ability to see a game played under 360 degrees to and be where they need to be

All the other stuff learning lines or 1 minute to go plans also comes under ''seeing the game ''

Good article - thanks

As depth ROB is fine, and like the previous post said he’ll get games if McAndrew is out. What will prevent him from being anything more, and deter clubs from him, is that his contract reflects a first-team ruck, not a warm body that should be on chips.

He's exactly the kind of player our administration will want

You haven’t been snuggling up to ROB at night have you

It's hard to know what he's on. He was less than $550k previously (though who knows how much less) and presumably there was some level of pay cut involved in getting the extra year. He had been dropped both the previous years, so you can't imagine a pay rise.

If he's on $500k, we might pay $125k of that to get the list spot back.

Does the AFL allow negative salary clauses?

For example, if a player gets to 5 games, they get paid $500k, but if they don't play at all, they owe the club $500k?
Doubt player managers would allow ir.
