Wait - designers added personality back to a typeface? Well I'll be damned.
Definitely feel like there's a strong element of 'corporate rejection' being implemented by, errr, corporations in their branding at this point in time. For a direct comparison Pizza Hut has also just gone back to an 80s/90s looks, which I'm sure has been covered in the thread before.

Market researchers must be aware that consumers feel disconnected by the cold corporatism that has taken over design through the process of web, flattening, simplifying etc. So they're going for looks that feel more down to earth, more in line with what the adults of today saw when they were kids.
A good example is the nostalgia for old McDonald's branding and the restaurants being designed to appeal to children, which has led to Maccas having a worldwide 'McDonald's Land' promotion.

I do wonder how much of their budget goes to replacing the ‘s’ on their storefronts. The one closest to me growing up never had the full lettering for more than a week at a time.

Yeah, I like the nostalgia of that.

I might be in the minority, but I like the cleverness of their current logo though. The RR incorporating the chicken face in the negative space is pretty cool.
