Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was named the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month on Thursday.
He had two interceptions and four passes knocked away in becoming just the third Charger to win the award, joining Joey Bosa (2016) and Paul Bradford (1997).
But, a few hours after the league announced Samuel’s honor, coach Brandon Staley explained that sometimes there “can be an illusion in the NFL of just how well you’re doing.”
He said Samuel’s second interception — Sunday at Kansas City — happened only because Samuel was out of position.

Samuel was supposed to be guarding wide receiver Marcus Kemp but came off that coverage and started chasing tight end Travis Kelce

Wasn’t pretty but a another good win against a tough team. Surprising that a defence which Chargers was very familiar with, Raiders still managed a lot of problems for the offence.
Good to see a well rounded performance not just relying on Herbie’s arm.

I think the gap between these two teams isn't much. Chargers got the big time jump - Raiders offence didn't wake up until the 3rd quarter, and then really had a great chance to tie the game early in the 4th. Chargers offence made some great plays on 4th down to extend drives for points.

What was clearly apparent today was how key an O-Line is to both offence's clicking. Chargers really couldn't do much once the Raiders started generating pressure - same thing for what Bosa et al did in the 1st half.

Browns and Ravens for you guys the next fortnight. Will be a good indicator as to where you're at for sure.

Haven’t watched the Brown’s play this year, but I like Bakers aggressive play making ability. Should be another tough game.
It was the first time I saw Herbert pressured this year, hopefully the O line can protect him better this week.

Jeez, what a game. Love watching this team play. Lucky to win that with Browns running game so dominant. Browns will be a play off team. Some gutsy plays calls. Looking forward to seeing the reactions in LA. Hopefully it might get a few others on board.
Go Bolts ⚡⚡⚡⚡

Was out for breakfast with the misso, check the score @ 13-27. Get home and it's 28-27. The next qtr & a bit was insane. Had my laptop in the bathroom while getting ready for work. Unreal morning. Neither team deserved to lose but relieved it wasn't us. Clear top of the division w/ the R*****s & Denver losing!

p.s. go Bills

Have teams figured out Justin Herbert? latimes.com

Chargers coach Brandon Staley insisted he wasn’t concerned that his team’s formerly flashy, high-powered offense was erratic and sometimes stalled during its 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, which gave him his first two-game losing streak as the team’s head coach.

Maybe he should be bothered. Two losses don’t make a pattern, but the way the Chargers lost is enough to demand serious film watching that leads to some creative solutions before they face the Eagles next Sunday at Philadelphia.

Getting a week off after their 34-6 blowout loss at Baltimore didn’t do anything for the Chargers’ passing game Sunday, and that played into the Patriots’ eager hands.

New England was willing to give up yards on the ground — the Chargers’ 163 yards rushing was their second-highest total this season — but Bill Belichick’s team focused on third-down situations and effectively eliminated big passing plays

Herbert, who was so impressively poised while helping lead the Chargers to four wins in their first five games, said he didn’t know if opponents have begun to figure him out as he gets deeper into his second NFL season.

But he has shown in the Chargers’ last two games he still has a lot to figure out when it comes to conquering tricky defenses.

On Sunday, the key for him was to find other options in the face of the Patriots’ zone coverage. Staley said he saw some protection issues, but Herbert said he didn’t feel rushed, though he planned to review that when he watches the game film.

“I felt like they gave me enough time,” he said. “It’s on me to make those throws and to get the ball up quicker, but I thought those guys up front did a good job blocking and I feel comfortable behind those guys.”

But in situations that called for patience and discipline — a phrase Staley uttered three times in a row, for emphasis — Herbert sometimes fell short. And he knew it.

“If the defense drops everyone out and nothing’s open downfield, you have to find your checkdown. You have to take off, you have to find four or five yards however you can get it,” he said. “But that’s just the tough part about playing quarterback. And something I have to keep learning.”

Chargers CB Ryan Smith suffered a torn ACL in the Chargers' Week 9 win over the Eagles and will miss the remainder of the season.
The Chargers entered Week 9 without a handful of corners due to various injuries, giving Smith his first start since 2018. Normally a special teams contributor, Smith was set to be the next man up in Los Angeles for a few weeks. The Chargers will have to continue digging deep into their depth chart to find starting corners. They face the Vikings in a potential shootout this week.

In the NFL’s concussion protocol for the second time in three weeks, Asante Samuel Jr. doesn’t have to search for learned advice.

He can turn to Joey Bosa, the Chargers’ three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher who suffered two concussions in the second half of last season.

The teammates already spoke after Samuel’s first concussion in a Week 8 loss to New England.

Former Chargers cornerback Leslie “Speedy” Duncan has died. He was 79.

“Speedy was, as his nickname fittingly would indicate, a player who was ahead of his time,” Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in a statement. “Our hearts are with the entire Duncan family, his teammates and everyone who was touched by Speedy and his larger-than-life personality. He will be sorely missed.”

Duncan played seven seasons for the Chargers and four for Washington, with his career spanning from 1964-74. He was a three-time AFL all-star with the Chargers and earned Pro Bowl honors in 1971 with Washington.

Duncan is tied for the franchise record of most interceptions in one game, picking three passes against the Raiders on Sept. 25, 1966. His seven picks in 1966 tied for seventh-most interceptions in a season in team history.

His 21 interceptions with the Chargers ties him for seventh in team history.

He was inducted in the team’s Hall of Fame in 1995 and was a member of the Chargers’ 40th and 50th Anniversary Teams.

Basically.... yeah, but earlier games mentioned there often going for it out of necessity, down and in the 4th qtr, but the recent Chiefs game, youre ahead and the extra FGs would build a bigger lead. Or mathematically a better score to be up by 7 than 4, to be up by 10 not 7. Also, often analytics misses the context of things. Some games you dont have the best player match-ups or mismatches, or youre like 0 out of 3 on converting short 3rd downs, so odds of converting a 4th are less likely in that game, or at that moment in the game, so taking the 3 is important. Also, just mixing in some kicks from time to time can help with future 4th down calls. Etc.
