He pretty much gets the oppositions best forward despite being undersized and still pretty inexperienced. McGuane will play his best football when he is the second or third defender behind two bigger bodies.
There aren't too many second or third talls from opposition clubs that could beat him regularly off the top of my head. Roughead & Franklin and Brown & Fev the only two that come to mind. Even those clubs don't have great third talls.
McGuane lacks 5kg and a cm or two to be the number one defender. It's why we need one of Rance (193cm 90+kg), Gourdis (194cm 93kg), or Post (194cm, close to 90kg), all of who are good KPD size to come on. This would leave Thursfield and McGuane to play the second and third talls with Farmer the small defender and Newman + Edwards/Tambling/Connors as the smaller rebounding defenders.
With the potential future forward line of
CHF - Astbury
Riewoldt (very handy 3rd tall)
FF - Griffiths
there isn't really room for another tall forward there so Post can be groomed as defender or classic "swingman" ala Leppitsch, C Cornes, Bradshaw, etc.
A big key back is a need in the coming drafts. To allow McGuane to play his best position: 2nd or 3rd tall defender.
Well apparantely to one HS scribe he went backwards last year.Which is bullshit. I'm a big fan of McGuane.
From where he started as a skinny runt from Queensland who had no idea about the caper, to where he is now is quite a testament to his work ethic and ability. People just expect results immediately. It doesn't work that way unless you are a born genius. Luke has to work hard at his game as it doesn't come as naturally as others, but his improvement from where he started has been first class.
Definitely a keeper and will be a very good player.
nope plenty rate him as a hack.
He is never going to be big bodied enough to out-position Brown Fev etc, but he is pretty strong overhead.
McGuane is locked into our backline and will only improve further under someone like Hardwick.
now that we have a proper defensive coach in leppa
but what if one of those dont work out? or get injuries. we need good players that are able to play forward. i dont mind if we use Post in the back half, but you cant just assume those 3 will become good footballers and because of that play other talls that may be suited forward in the backline. With the potential future forward line of

McGuane will be a handy player for a while still. i think all the tall backs will find it hard to keep there spot this year unless they have a very good year. with the amount of players that can play as a tall backmen a few bad games in a row and you might spend the week at coburg.
