Opinion Major changes for 2023

So you reckon taking out the All-Australian Ruckman helps our clearances?
You did suggest changing the personnel, should we take the All-Australian midfielders out instead? What is your actual point?

you said sarcastically 'I wonder who could possibly make a difference'. alluding to Grundy being the obvious solution. I don't care who is in there but they need to sort that out. I would suggest that 1 or 2 of Oliver, Viney or Petracca need to be out of the centre square. If they can't win clearance over a 6 month sample size then they haven't earned the right to be given the centre clearance privileges. I would suggest Oliver stays and Viney and Petracca go out. And bring in some different faces.

Gawn gets sharked a tonne and Grundy gives us an extra midfielder after the ball up. Regardless, having both makes us harder for the opposition to prepare for. I agree that the balance is off, what were really missing is an outside receiver.

Gawn getting sharked has been going on for at least 2 seasons . We did nothing about it !!

agree re: Gawn. Yeah, we'll be hard to prepare for but only if Grundy or Gawn is actually being damage up forward. Otherwise, they can just put any on them and we'll get rebounded against all season long. Simon Goodwin needs to wake up and get his stuff sorted. It seems like he liked the 2 rucks set up because he's doubling down on the slow, long and high ball movement to the pockets. I hope I'm wrong.

Yep, Grundy averages 4.2 tackles a game compared to Gawn at 2.5, to say hes a lumbering ruck doesnt really paint the correct picture, he plays defense when the ball is on the deck far better than Max can.

also for reference, Jackson averages 2.63 tackles, so Grundy is a massive step up on Jackson too.

Gawn just isn’t aggressive enough in the ruck most of the time. Want to see him smashing it more out of centre bounces with Grundy doing more ruck work around the ground. Think the kids will benefit a lot more from that set up. Hopefully this leaves Max with more energy when’s he’s forward or behind the play

The nightmare scenario now is that they play another SOO game and both Gawn and Grundy get picked in opposing teams and end up injuring each other.

Casey have a coach yet? How about Ratten?
Would be surprised if he didn't get an AFL gig somewhere. Would be a great acquisition to our Casey side though. Not sure how many positions are out there this time of year, but he'd be snapped up at AFL level you'd reckon?

Can see him easily going to a team as an assistant, or some invented 'director of coaching' type role. Has plenty of experience across several clubs. Think he'd offer a lot

Stability is a good thing, however a Ratten would have been handy, but I suspect we are at our limit with the cap and would have to squeeze out Yze or Choco to get a Ratten type in the box.

Yeah not Choco everything I see him in he is inspirational. I think the existing coaching group already have formed great relationships with the players, which I think is Rattens great strength. Hopefully someone somewhere can fit him in.

How about Yze as a forward coach and Ratten as a midfield coach?

TLDR I would probably leave the coaching as it is. This year it seemed like the team was cooked after the bye period due to form drops and a number of players carrying injuries. At the end of next year I can see room to change up the coaching. More so if the points at the end of this post are not handled well.

Yze was a specialist goal-kicking coach and development coach at the hawks. Then became the backline coach according to this site: Adam Yze Stats. In that link he is also credited with being the architect of the 2021 defense and now he is the midfield coach. I guess he can do it all.

The forward disposal I can see players trying to improve but still failing and that, to me, is the biggest issue this club has. But that seems to be more of a player issue, I only watch the games on T.V so I have no idea how the leading and forward craft looks so I can't offer any opinion on Greg Stafford and if moving him on would be of benefit to the team or not.

Bringing Hunter in, I am hopeful, will have a large impact on the team though and address the forward 50 entries, somewhat. The opposition has shown they will tag Langdon but with Hunter that now makes the team less single point sensitive to going forward.

There are some great questions for us supporters next year, and the below are fantastic drivers for change as well and will give us a great view into the coaching at the club:-
  • I felt Jackson was ok this year, but I expect Grundy to excel.
  • I felt Gawn was a bit flat down forward, but I think they will put a lot of time into him as a forward over the break.
  • The Hunter and Langdon combination.
  • What they do with Brayshaw.
  • See how Van Rooyen/Jordan/Turner/Bowey go as well, getting into the team.
  • The development of Petty.
  • The return of McDonald.

Why does he look like Dave Franco?

Just out of curiosity. What do you see in Ratten?
3 premierships as a midfield coach. When he coached our midfield group in 2004 it was the best our midfield looked for a long time. Maybe he's better as an assistant coach than a senior coach? Decent job at Carlton, possibly unfairly let go there, and yes struggled a little at the saints, but the list is poor. But again, maybe he's a better assistant than senior coach? Plus he's been captain of a club, won a premiership, 2x All Australian midfielder. Plenty of reasons he'll be a great midfield coach. fantastic resume. moving Yze to forward coach and Ratts as mid coach would be an option that could pay off big. IMO of course.

fair call. When I heard that StKilda were chasing De Goey it really made me question who was making those sort of decisions. And no doubt, Ratten would've been a big player in that. De Goey is just about the last player StKilda would need. Same thing when they picked up Hannebery and Bradley Hill.

I think Saints need a DeGoey. In fact every team needs a DeGoey. Risky with his off field behaviour, but he's a jet on the field. Saints were invisible this offseason. Clearly something was going on behind the scenes but their list improves significantly with DeGoey on their list. Their mids are more than capable of getting the footy however struggle to hit the scoreboard. Having a mid who can kick multiple goals and win his won ball would improve them by 3-4 goals a game IMO. Yes, a risk, but IMO they should have chased harder knowing they weren't doing anything else this offseason.
