A proposed trade scenario of James Kelly and Travis Varcoe to Port Adelaide for their first rd. pick. Would port consider that an even trade or am i being a bit one-eyed blue and white....

if we got pick 4, it would enhance our future youth development by getting a quality midfielder or KPP.

it also falls under the clubs policy of only trading for picks.... port would have the salary cap room for kelly and i think trav would be better suited closer to home.

thoughts??????

After the GF, i think Didak has more appeal than 4th string midfielder Kelly (not rated outside Geelong) and why was i a 1st round pick Varcoe.

I agree with your thoughts and if geelong can cash in on their strong list and trade the fringe players to keep injecting quality youth you will be strong for a decade.

I envy your position and it could turn into a dynasty if you are business smart with trades

i agree and this is where i think the loyalty to players from fans come from. for this club to continue being a top 4 club for the next 5 years+ it needs to look past next season and to 3 or 4 seasons time.

i feel we have replacements in the magoos for kelly and varcoe may have a "i can get this kid to play great footy" sentiment for Mark Williams. whether they are a justified trade for pick 4 is where i am unsure.

port could probably get didak/kerr for that pick so kelly/varcoe may not hold as much value but those two players would makle an instant difference in ports side....

Id rather do a deal with the Crows for Dangerfield and considering how they have been burnt over the years with non-sa boys they may just be willing to talk... maybe but probably not.
I doubt Bomber would be interested in trading players , he has bad memories of what it did at Essendon. Trade the player who want out or who are on the fringe , not the players who are happy and performing.Sure this only will give us R2 or R3 picks but I believe with Wells and our staff that will be good enough.

PA wouldn't go for it for two reasons, firstly I don't think they would see trhemselves as better off and secondly they have done very well out of recycling unfashionable players or discards so I don't think they'll be inclined to spend for something that they seem to get for free.

No club will trade any pick under 16 unless it includes ROK or kerr.
And I reckon both will stay home.

If anyone can tell me where I can back them both to stay home then I am on.

I think any deal would have to include pick 15 so that port will still have a first round selection. I think you would have more chance with the deal if you offered pick 15 and Ryan Gamble.

Port are also big fans of Prismall but i doubt they will want him now with the injury.

Vegas is a great player and I'd hate to lose him ... but if Port offered that it'd be hard to turn down. Pick 4 would give us the choice of whoever we wanted outside Watts, Rich and Naitanui - thats a pretty awesome choice in this draft - and to be perfectly blunt all we lose is a guy who couldn't make our GF team anyway.

That said, we have put three years into Vegas and he looks to be on the verge now of repaying the faith, and from what I can tell he also seems to be a popular guy at the club so I don't know how the others would react to losing him.

I doubt very much it would happen anyway. I'm not at all sure we'd agree to it, and I'm even less sure Port would.

Nice guys do not come first.
Geelong should enter the trade and if they have to loose players so be it.
We may be able to improve by trading and therefore set ourselves up for a longer period of success.
Our coach has to keep an open eye on this if not we are not even in the picture.

Jumping at shadows guys. 2 losses for the season and we are wanting a clean out? It was an unlucky loss, our team list doesn't need any changes.

I despise trade week and all the innuendo that goes with it, but having said that, i wouldn't be totally shattered if we traded James Kelly for another first round draft pick.

I don't have anything against Kelly, but i think we could cover him and i believe we'd get over the odds, which makes it an idea worth entertaining.

It could happen. What did you guys get from the trade of Brent Moloney?? He was popular and his trade wasn't well liked by the players, but from memory you got a big win from that trade. Could see Bomber doing something similar again.

Cannot remember if he was involved in the trade that got us ottens ???

He was. IIRC, Richmond wanted two 1st round picks for Ottens, but we only had one (naturally), so we traded Moloney to Melbourne for the other one, and traded both picks to the Tigers.

We got pick 12, which we sent along with our pick 16 to Richmond for Brad Ottens.

Interestingly, Richmond used the picks on Danny Meyer and Adam Pattison.

I don't think that we are necessarily jumping at shadows. You'd be unwise not to even entertain the thought. Every club this year will be looking more towards the next 5 years or so rather than next year. With the limited amount of picks and goings on over the next couple years due to the expansion teams, then we must look forward and do what's best. Trade week is always tough, but for the greater good it must be done.

it's not just me and other posters who are alone here.... kevin sheedy has stated as much in todays sunday herald sun where he says that the worst thing geelong (or hawthorn) could do is sit on there hands during trade period......

"The worst thing for Hawthorn and Geelong to do now is not trade and play it safe. That's where Essendon made an error. We could of traded more, but all of a sudden people think you're disloyal to your player base. But a coach works for his club and needs to make decisions accordingly....."

I truly believe we need to be proactive in this trade period to make this list a better 5-7 year long term list and use the currency in some of our fringe players.... players 16-22 and better VFL players to sustain our current top 4 status...
