Gutted Blake may walk
By: Lee Crossley
Geelong ruckman Mark Blake is being courted by a number of clubs as the frenzy before trade week intensifies.
Blake, 22 and out of contract, is gutted after being dumped for the Grand Final for former skipper Steven King.
Blake's manager Anthony McConville told mX his client could be on the move.
``I can't say which clubs are interested but a number of clubs are interested in Mark,'' he said. ``Mark is out of contract and at this point in time is considering his options.
``You always envisage for those players out of contract that there could be the possibility of a trade. It's a climate we are all bracing and preparing ourselves for.
``What comes next week, we'll deal with it when it comes.''
Blake's Grand Final replacement Steven King played six AFL games and received two premiership medals. Blake played 22 and got none.
Geelong chief executive Brian Cook told mX the Cats will fight to keep Blake.
``He's very much a required player at the Geelong Football Club, a part of our future,'' Cook said.
``I find it very surprising (that Blake would be looking elsewhere),'' Cook said.
``I don't find the issue of him being gutted surprising, that's a natural reaction, but I am surprised about the possibility of Mark going elsewhere.''
Cook admitted Saturday's result probably would have been the same had Blake played.
``Certainly the result would indicate the 22 players who played was a good side, there's no issue there,'' he said.
``Had Mark Blake played on the weekend, would the result been any different? I doubt it.
``I don't think anyone can read into the future, we haven't got that much foresight.''
Cook hoped new deals could be done for several other uncontracted players, including Steven King and Darren Milburn, soon.
