So if McDoanld is out for another 6 weeks that would mean a season debut against the Kangas in round 4. Looking at the glass half full, it does give some time for potentially, the 2 forward system to have some space. Then moving forward in the season you can rotate the sore tall forwards and truly find out who the marriage should contain and who was the 3rd wheel all along.

Should have to dominate the 2s first. No way a walk up start

The next game will tell the tale. It will be much more physical. The VFL game is being played early. My guess is that Mills is out again and Sheldrick plays seniors.
Yeah I think Sheldrick plays again next week, probably so do all the other fringe guys who made appearances today (maybe not the quieter ones like Mitchell and Hanily?)

But Sheldrick had 33% CBAs today with no Mills there. Doesn't feel like he's in the preferred midfield mix at the moment and Warner Jr. & Adams looked a bit more useful forward.

You're right though, one big game next week and things can change considerably.

I actually think the only thing that changes the Round 0 team is injuries.

Ben Matthews’ post game interview was telling.

I didn't take much out of Mathews comments. The established mids are a point of interest for journos, and the fringe players like Sheldrick are a point of interest for journos. So I think it's reasonable for Mathews to talk about them as two separate groups.

I will say that as much as I thought all the fringe players were fine and had some nice moments, I don't think any moved the needle and demanded selection with their performances today really. But there's still next week.

I didn’t really like Matthews comment re: “the main group” (as opposed to the rest).

Sure it was just choice of words - but it’s suggestive of fixed tiers, rather than a whole squad all competing for spots.

Seems like Amartey showed again that he's our best forward when he's at his best.

His inconsistency can be frustrating but you just have to back him in because his ceiling is the highest out of the big 3 in the immediate future IMO.

I feel like the whole squad is not competing for spots though. As much as we hope Dean Cox brings a fresh perspective, Horse was not so crazy and stubborn that all 22 of the blokes he regularly turned to last year weren't the right guys. The overwhelming majority of those players are still better than those in the chasing pack below them and have probably proven that over the summer. I think today just reinforced that. Most of the senior incumbents looked better going at 75% than the fringe players who looked to be doing their utmost to impress.

So I think there are still 'tiers' and always will be.

Yeah, fundamentally you’re right.

But I still want to get a feeling different to that I had with Horse - namely that he had favourites and they were basically undroppable.

Pressure for spots should be intense. I just found Matthew’s’ choice of words suggestive of a culture of the favourites & the rest.

I feel ya DQ. I guess I focused more on the actions than the words. A decent chunk of fringe players got a fair opportunity to show what they can do today. I certainly wasn't expecting four quarters of action from Sheldrick, Warner Jr, Hanily, Mitchell, Adams, etc. I don't think Cox would've OK'd that if he wasn't open to the idea of those guys being on par with his incumbents.

Mitchell offers something very different with his size. We've got a stack the same size but Mitchell is tall and quick. I reckon Cox recognises this.
Part of why he was drafted.
He was our VFL player of the year, got a few games, got extended and is being tried in a new role off half back. This all from last year's efforts. Pretty sure the coaches rate him as at least fringe, at worst solid depth.

Out of Corey Warner, Mitchell and Hanily I thought Hanily had the classiest moments. The first 2 get the ball but sometimes really just handball anywhere whereas I felt Hanily even when boxed in on a couple of occasions picked out his targets with a handball really skilfully and looking like he wasn't rushed.

Given that the other two are more experienced that's a good sign with Tom and probably part of why he was extended. Looks a good prospect.

Corey showed several moments of class. His goal for one. And he pinpointed a perfect pass into a crowded forward line to the space in front of Heeney for our second goal.

My beef was him (beef maybe too strong a word) is that he didn’t find the ball more, especially in the first half. In the second half he had a couple of really good moments when he ran back to help out in defence - just the kind of hard running that wingmen and high forwards are expected to do.
