Surprise, surprise, Carlton took brilliant South Australian midfielder Bryce Gibbs with its first selection - No.1 overall - and in the process landed a decade-player that will play a massive part in Carlton's fortunes over the next 10 years. The Blues were eager on gaining a ruckman at No.17, which is where Shaun Hampson came into the picture - he bolted into top 20 calculations leading up to the draft - while Carlton was also super keen on midfielder/defender Shaun Grigg. Athletic tall Mark Austin (No.35), speedster Clint Benjamin (No.51) and hard-running defender Joe Anderson (No.67) were expected to be taken in this region, which eventuated.
