You do have to wonder why Rendell had to lose his job, given the precedents set by Roos, Hird & Dipper.

Maybe the working relationship between Rendell, Mifsud & Fahoud had degenerated to the point that it was simply unworkable, or more the point they couldn't/wouldn't work with Rendell. Given the the AFL has made it pretty clear they were backing the latter, the AFC faced the unpleasant prospect of a relationship with the main AFL indigenous development officers that could be somewhere between dysfunctional and non-existent. Forgetting the potential racism angle of the story that was blown out by the media and jumped on by AD, it's still not a good situation.

IMO the best thing the AFL can do to salvage something out of this is to do what they should have in the first place - arrange a mediation session between the parties behind closed doors and politely tell the media to back off until they can release some kind of joint statement. There are real people at the centre of this train wreck, and continuing the media circus ultimately isn't going to help anyone at all.

I do not think he should be doing any media in the state he is in. I do know Misfud has been in contact with him this whole time. Rendell is concerned for Misfud as supposedly he has 4 kids. That is the kind of bloke Matt is, even though Matt has 2 teenage boys himself.
Honestly at present, Matt isnt concerned about money or his job. Only the reputation he spent 35 years building.

Mifsud now retweeting some negative messages he received... weird.

@jason_mifsud Congrats on the damage to Rendell, an innocent man hung out to dry. When are you going to have the guts to stand up?

Neither of mine yet though :( haha

It really sounds like Rendell is hurting from this, and going by his interview on MMM and FB's comments he wouldn't appreciate personal attacks on Mifsud like the above. I get the feeling he really needs closure by hearing the other parties' grievances and telling his apology that he said on MMM to them face to face. Hopefully they are big enough to publicly accept it, although after reading some of Fahoud's tweets I have my doubts.

This isn't about a feel good move, or to gloss over things with a positive spin - the Genie is out of the bottle and the damage has been well and truly done to many reputations (Rendell, Trigg, Mifsud, Fahoud, AD). The powers at the AFL have handled this spectacularly badly, from the original story given to media with "that line" taken out of context, to AD's knee jerk reaction to headhunt a scapegoat following it - in that regard I think Mifsud himself definitely has something to answer, as what has followed is nothing short of a total disaster.

Love how he thinks its over. Its only just begun.

Can someone tweet him to resign?

Despite his best intentions, his handling of the issue has been very poor, and he'll end up causing more harm than good.

You lose your job for that these days.

in context, his comment about one white parent wasn't racist (sorry Vlad, but you got that one wrong)

that leaves the idea of putting indigenous kids through scholarships with private schools, a la Cyril. Is that fundamentally racist and offensive?
Funny.. everyone who knows exactly what was said in that conversation (Vlad, Mifsud, Fahour, Trigg, Rendell) has admitted that his comments were racist, albeit inadvertently so.

My gut feel is that the "white parent" thing is probably the least of Rendell's problems, being clearly an absurdist extreme example. His assimilation program (aka the academy) was far more offensive - and we're also led to believe that even more offensive comments were made as well.

How is it not over? Rendell's lost his job and he's not going to get it back.

We're all arguing in & about the aftermath, but there really aren't any new events to come in the chain, just more post-mortems.

Yeah Im sure it will be a quite nights moderation for you on the boards tonight after misfud is on tv.

Matt Rendell - best intentions, handling of wording poor, offending two people.

Result? Sacked.

Jason Mifsud - best intentions, handling of situation poor, stopped any further balanced discussion of indigenous welfare from 90% of the AFL community.

Result? Nothing to see here.

Despite some people believing the matter is done and dusted, unless misfud makes a really outstanding appearance tonight, that changes the feeling of the vast majority of football people, I reckon things are going to escalate, and get really really ugly.

Theres a real danger of causing a massive divide. I mean, what kind of message does it send when misfud is only prepared to speak on an indigenous show? Massive balls up all round. Rendell-Misfud-AFL.

Don't get me wrong.. the post-mortems will continue for some time to come and will definitely get a lot of people fired up. However, nothing is going to change in regard to the state of Rendell's employment status.

Unlikely. At the end of the day it was Trigg's decision to terminate Rendell's employment, albeit with Vlad pulling the strings. How are things going to escalate? The AFC Chairman (Rob Chapman) has come out in support of Trigg, so there's no hope of action from that angle. Vlad's stranglehold on AFL House is unparalleled and (much though I'd love to see an inquisition happen) there's nothing likely to eventuate on that front either.

It's not necessarily a matter of where Misfud is happy to speak. Misfud & Fahoud have been gagged by order of Vlad. It's where Vlad is happy for them to speak - in this case, a relatively non-threatening environment, where their side will be heard but they won't be subject to rigorous questioning.

I think its pretty reasonable to think we havent got to the post mortem stage when misfud hasnt commented in public.

Like I said, if he doesnt dispell the general feeling tonight, I could see the afl having to (do what they should have from the start) get misfud and rendell on tv together to air it all out. How long do you think misfud and the afl is going to put up with being heckled on twitter?

I'll keep heckling him for a while :thumbsu:

He's just telling us what happened in the past.. in other words, a post-mortem. Nothing he says tonight will change anything - probably not even the minds of most viewers, most of whom seem set in their ways no matter what evidence is presented before them.

The AFL will be content to just ride this one out.

In most cases it will work, I doubt it here.

Havent you noticed the mood get worse as the days go on? This is showing no signs of dying out. Ill say it for the third time, if people dont like the way misfud presents tonight, the debate will rage on.

Debate will lead to abuse, abuse leads to hate, hate leads to afl action.

Nah.. it is dying out. Albeit slowly.

Between midnight & 2:45pm yesterday there were 126 posts in this thread. Today we've had just 111 posts in the same period. Most of today's posts have been stirred up by the news of Mifsud's interview, I'd say the count would have been less than 50 if he had opted to remain silent. While I haven't bothered counting them, I'd also guess that there have been considerably fewer people posting in this thread in the same period.
