I don't think we can afford to lose either of them, they are in the age bracket that we are lacking in and at worst provide some versatility to our side.

Won't mind too much if Welsh goes as his illdiscipline is a cancer on the club at the moment, and Hocking can do the tagging anyway, but McPhee will be a massive loss!

I would have thought the clubs isn't giving them what they want.

Welsh would be a big loss. McPhee on the other hand would only hurt short term, and only if we plan on using him as a forward. Long term we need to replace him with a more well rounded utility. Sorry but I simply don't rate his work down back, for every great defensive mark and dash out of defense there are two dropped or fumbled marks and two indecisive hold ups which kill our rebounding momentum. Yes he has played so good games down back but he isn't smart enough to play there predominantly with the new game plan, and we use him there far too much (much more than a "gap filler").

Anyway, I never believe things like this until there is a semi-credible source.

Every time I see McPhee play, I can never see where his bad reputation comes from. Seems to play ok to me.

Wouldn't see him play nearly as much as you guys though, so I am certainly not going to argue.

if we gave Williams a 3 year contract then we should give Welsh and McPhee 3 year contracts to, they are all in the same age bracket so theres no excuse not to.

His main problem is he is a stop start sort of player, which has earned him the nickname stop & prop McPhee. As he generally plays in defence and with our running game plan, his style hinders the team more than not. When he plays on quickly to his first option he is great.

regurgitating what was written in the article is a bit silly.

age is irrelevant as far as i'm concerned. as long as the player involved will still be in the best 22 (or pushing for it) in 3 years, i see no problems with a 3 year deal.

in the case of mcphee and welsh, i think 2 years is ok. both probably underperformed, on average, during their last deals.

Ahh... sounds like the Jason Roe factor!

Gives the impression that he has all the attributes but his brain lets him down. Can be both amazing and agonizingly frustrating in the space of 2 minutes. Shows enough to create the illusion to opposition teams that he is a great player, but the supporters of the club know the real deal.

In no way could I see either of them leaving the club. No way at all. I think if they were to leave I would miss Welsh more [even after his indiscressions] because he was in great form before his leg injury, and was not playing too badly towards the end of the season when he returned.

But as we have already lost a fair bit of experienced from the club, I cannot see us giving away any more. I think their managers are just trying to do their job and get them a longer contract. Wouldn't surprise me if they slipped a wad of cash to some HUN "reporter" to write this article Carlton style. But I don't think the respectable HUN would ever write an article that wasn't completely factual, so this must be true!

In other news, the NAB cup draw comes out [officially] tomorrow.
