Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

This seems ridiculous, both are required senior players in the leadership group. They have experience. Sign them for three years and get out of the papers for this type of story.

I'd rather be reading about Gumbleton and Hurley etc.

They are in no position to ask for 3 years.

Take it or go I say.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

They will re-sign.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Make medium-term contract decisions to avoid throwaway back-page stories? No thanks. Give them what the club thinks is warranted.

Anyway... I would have thought marking was the last thing you'd pick on McPhee about. Makes silly decisions when he has the ball, can't bend over, but no problem at all marking it.

Actually if you go back and watch McPhee carefully, although he has no trouble marking the ball when he is concentrating on it, he has a habit of often dropping easy marks because he is already deciding what to do with the ball next before he has marked it. More of a concentration fumble really.

On topic though, I think two year deals for both these players is reasonable.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

If they so not resign, would it be that great a loss, Welsh missed most of the first part of the season and we played some great footy (if people can remember, Collingwood - Anzac day, Hawthorn early) and McPhee, as much as I love his versatility, we have a kid by the name of Slattery playing in the twos who I think will be able to hold down a similiar job by years end.

Welsh has played mostly as a tagger of late, Correct? Hocking did a reasonable job? Slatts also? I think we need to let the recruiting staff do there job and to see if there is anything worth looking at late in the draft (Pick 50 odd i think) or in the Pre Season Draft, if they think there is, then these two boys will sadly be missed, but if the Recruiting staff dont, then I will say these two boys will be on the list for next year at least, but not for three years.

McPhee -> 1 year
Welsh -> 1 year

The HUN never fails to disappoint. It's a fairly baseless article of pure speculation, I'd expect them to resign.

I wouldn't mind either TBH I'd be after McPhee if he was available, purely for his versatility but would be played up forward at Carlton.

No point really speculating as they will most likely resign.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

The club suspension, turning up late to training, getting suspended during games, etc hurt us this year. You are kidding if it did not!

Please, for the grace of God can you please stop posting on this site. I feel when I read your posts my braincells evaporate at an extraordinary rate, so please, I beg you, just leave.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

I thought Welsh only signed 1 year deals to make him not complacent??? I remember reading that somewhere??

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

My main query is why is Welsh posing for that photo

That was McVeigh I believe.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Won't mind too much if Welsh goes as his illdiscipline is a cancer on the club at the moment, and Hocking can do the tagging anyway, but McPhee will be a massive loss!

I have to agree with Welsh very similar mould to Fev, footy show regular, making waves by nailing Paris and is a tagger in our best 22.. I have never been a fan of McPhee flashes of brilliance combined with a truck load of errors we have plenty of decent talls in our back half and he will find himself a bit player.

why didn't ESSENDon put these players up for trade, am sure the saints would have taken Welsh for Ball!!! maybe McPhee for Jolly we must have a ton of cash in our cap Lucas/Loyld gone must be at least 500-700k to burn

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

'I can't mark McPhee'? I wasn't really paying attention to that part.

He would be one of the best marks (mark to height ratio at least) in the league.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Can fully understand where these 2 boys are coming from after Williams, dodgy knee and all, gets 3 years at around the same age bracket. Their managers are not doing their jobs if they dont go hard on this. The club should've sorted this before trade week - either give them 3 years or use them for trading and give them the opportunity to go to a club for a 3 year deal. Now we risk losing both of them for nothing. I wonder what is happening to our club these days. These guys are in the leadership group and part of the fabric of the club, yet we are leaving them hanging on. On top of the EFC's lack of effort to retain Lloydy this really is a worrying sign.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Lack of effort to retain?? The bloke was having a daughter and wasn't going to play a non-FF position.
Learn2Essendon....

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Lloyd has been playing a non FF position for the last 2 seasons. They have been wanting to get games into Neagle for 2 seasons now, basically when he was not anywhere AFL level fitness and not deserving of some of the games he played. His development was at Lloyd's expense but Lloydy copped this and played further up the ground and out of position. Come the end of this year the club could hardly have been said to have gone out of their way to keep Lloydy on for 2010 when he clearly had more footy in him. My overall point is that some recent decisions have a very 'unEssendon' look and feel about them and this is a worrying sign.

Re: I can't mark McPhee & My eyes are to big welsh could leave Essendon

Show some respect people.

I can't believe that a speculative article is written and everyone jumps on and starts bad mouthing our own players. Disgraceful!!

I am sure they will sign, if not surely this would have been sorted out before trade week. As the artcile says they are both on holidays at the moment so any serious talks haven't even started.

And anyone who says that we won't miss them should go an barrack for Richmond.

You cant do much more then offer him a contract :o the only worrying sign is you have a similar name to me and people will get confused.

Dont buy into the media hype! Hutchy couldnt get a story so he made one up, Lloyd was welcome to stay

Re: McPhee & Welsh could leave Essendon

Their managers have to do this. This will be the last big $$$ contract that they sign so they'll want every possible button pushed. If they (managers) weren't doing this they'd be out of a job. I expect them to sign.

BOTH would be losses if they left though - on and off the field.

Re: McPhee & Welsh could leave Essendon

If the story is true, I can see where McPhee and Welsh are coming from with trying to stitch the best deals possible. Realistically though, two year contracts is on the money. If they think they are good for three, they should back themselves in to be good enough after the two years to get another contract. If they don't have the faith in themselves to do this, why should the club?

Re:Williams, players that are traded are nearly always paid over the odds and an extra year added. Have a look at Bradshaw, he'll be 35 when he ends his three year contract with Sydney should they snag him in the PSD. Also in Williams favour, given the Lloyd and Lucas retirements (yes retirements), we need some more experience in the forward line. I don't think the targetting of Williams was a side thought to Trade Week, but a strategic trade to benefit Essendon whilst our younger players are developing (strategic as in a player that can play forward, but be apart of the forward team as opposed to filling one of the spots hopefully filled by Gumby/Neagle/Hurley/Still).

Re: McPhee & Welsh could leave Essendon

Since when does mediocrity be rewarded with 3 years?

Williams got offered 3 because he can bring some x-factor and goals. He got the extra year to entice him over also.

McPhee was once a potential gun. But now is a good-ordinary player who makes too many mistakes. Still plays some good games, but is very inconsistent. Is nowhere near where he was when he won our B&F. We keep kidding ourselves that he is still that good. He is not, or at least his performances have not been. 2 years = Justice.

Welsh is now a full-time tagger. He is slow. On the plus side he tries his guts out and is a good clubman. But if he is such a good clubman, he won't be telling his management to fish for better offers. He will sign for the club for 2 years. Coming back from injury he was found out for pace on many occasions this year, and at times his disposal was horrendous. Especially kicking into the forward 50. He had some good games i.e against Judd. However, on the balance I think he had an average year. 2 years = Justice.

NO INDIVIDUAL IS BIGGER THAN THE CLUB!

If they want to hold the club to ransom for an extra year and get sent packing I won't be upset thats for sure.

Re: McPhee & Welsh could leave Essendon

The bigger problem is what the club would do with the 700, 000+ salary cap space if they did walk!! Makes the challenge to pay 92.5% real.

Seriously it seems to me a simple gambit claim, and normal in the course of negotiations. They both know that a third year is rich and also know that the pressure on them to get another contract after this ‘2’ year deal is less likely or at a severe financial discount. The Williams thing possibly rankles but that is the business of football. If there is any truth to players letting this get under their skin then there really is an attitude problem down there.

They’ll take the two years happily after the club bump and pad the contracts a wee bit. If not, Welsh is mad and the EFC should concentrate on Mcphee.

And re; the comments about the players and the club.

McPhee cops ways too much criticism, unduly and by posters reading more BF than watching his game and role in the play. He’ll most likely get a new deal after his two finishes 2011 despite the talent moving through.

Welsh has every right to be worried and try for whatever he can get. Grossly overrated. I highly doubt he can hold his role for 2 years let alone 3.

And this ‘clubman’ thing is fine within the club but once it is spun in the media and becomes a by line/tag or another asset to be considered it becomes nothing more than a manipulation and mystification of what is really happening.
