LAST TIME: Melbourne 20.15 (135) def Franchise Two 9.3 (57), Round 13 2012 at the MCG
Despite losing a rampaging Mitch Clark to injury just before half-time, Melbourne scored a convincing 78-point win against Franchise Two on that Sunday at the MCG, kicking 14 goals to four after quarter-time.
It was Clark who kicked four goals in the first quarter to tilt the game in Melbourne's favour.
Clark was the best player on the ground until he crashed heavily into James Magner's knee just before half-time and left the ground groggy. He did not re-appear but his teammates went on with the job.
$€U₤₤¥ received plenty of boos as he jumped out of the blocks with six touches in the first quarter - his first coming 12 seconds into the game. His pace and run worried Melbourne early. However as soon as Jordie McKenzie came off the bench to take $€U₤₤¥, the Demons took control.
Melbourne's midfield began to win the ball with Mark Jamar dominating the ruck. The midfield shared the ball and the Demons tackled ferociously inside 50. The Demons had 13 forward tackles in the first half.
Clark had good support up forward from defenders turned forwards Jared Rivers and Colin Garland. Garland and Rivers kicked seven goals between them.
SUMMARY:
It's been a big week in football for the Melbourne Football Club. Sam Blease won his second NAB AFL Rising Star nomination, Lynden Dunn and John Cleese finally parted company and coach Mark Neeld reeled in Australian cycling coach Charlie Walsh to motivate his charges ahead of this week's game at Manuka Oval in Canberra.
In light of the fact that the Demons are taking on football's equivalent of Eddie the Eagle, one would have thought it was unnecessary to pull in an Olympic heavyweight coach for this one.
Still, Neeld is confident that his team is making progress under his tutelage, having improved their defence, reduced the number of opposition inside 50s, and stayed competitive longer in the second half of the year.
The club has ventured out of the state on four occasions this year and their average losing margin has been 74 points. Including a loss in the Northern Territory against Port Adelaide (a home game for the MFC). A few years ago, the Demons were rostered to play home games against the Sydney Swans at Manuka and were beaten in every encounter for a few years until they abandoned the idea. Before that, we did win a game in Canberra against North Melbourne.
But nevertheless, we should be able to finally establish some space on the AFL ladder away from the franchises with a substantial confidence-boosting win over Franchise Two, who, despite Kevin Sheedy's protestations to the contrary, clearly look to be tanking, determined to pick up a wooden spoon and the prize that goes with it - gun youngster Lachie Whitfield.
GW$ won their first game at Manuka against the other franchise but lost to the Bulldogs. The games weren't well patronised and one can only hope franchise management have engaged those phony Hare Krishna rent-a-crowd lookalikes again and Fat Phil $€U₤₤¥ doesn't get stuck in the turnstiles on the way through. Otherwise we could see close to a record low attendance for any AFL/VFL match
Sheedy upset his hosts even before his team ventured down to Melbourne last time, by making derogatory remarks about Demons supporters and the snow and generally seeking to troll about various issues including the signing of $€U₤₤¥ at the end of the 2011 season. The response was an appropriate smashing at the MCG - the game's greatest venue - with a chorus of boos directed all day and mainly at the player who formerly wore 31 for the red and blue.
Sheedy's team went back home with their tails between their legs and, apart from an aberration of a week in which they pumped a listless Port Adelaide (and got Matthew Primus sacked for his troubles) they have routinely been thumped by margins in excess of 100 points, and been out of most matches by the end of the first quarter.
Last week, they played on the other new franchise at Metricon Stadium and 'won' the Lachie Whifield Cup. The thing is that young Master Whifield is such a good footballer, that having taken a firm hold of poll position to secure him, the Giants are unlikely to undo their hold on the prized catch - I say this at the risk of upsetting Mr. Sheedy who will probably say my suggestion is disgraceful, whilst at the same time bemoaning some unexpected and sudden "injuries" to half his team.
They're not doing it by halves either. They've sent so many people in for early surgery you could shoot a cannon through the dormitory of the Breakfast Point compound and there's a fair chance you'd even miss Phil.
After us, GW$ have the Saints and North. Even if they were to somehow climb over us and win, they won't win the next two. If they were to beat us, they'd have to win by a thumping margin to gain sufficient percentage to find their way off the bottom. So, all going according to plan I guess...
WALKING WOUNDED:
Melbourne:
James Frawley (quad) returns after he was a late withdrawal against St Kilda, while Jack Watts (ankle) is also back after just missing against the Saints. Clint Bartram, Jamie Bennell and Max Gawn (all knee), Mitch Clark and Aaron Davey (both foot) and Ricky Petterd (hamstring) won't play again this season.
The mystery injury of the week is yet to be determined.
GW$:
Franchise Two have clearly "put the cue in the rack", with key forwards Jonathan Patton (shoulder niggle) and Jeremy Cameron (hip niggle) as well as midfielder Dylan Shiel (toe) going for early surgery this week, ensuring they'll play no further part. Co-captain Callan Ward is also unlikely to play again this year, along with Rhys Palmer being left out, while Toby Greene, Taylor Adams and James McDonald will be playing. For McDonald it will be the second time he has faced his old club. Others sidelined for the year are Setanta O'hAilpin, Tim Mohr and Sam Reid.

WHO'S HOT:
Sam Blease – The Rising Star nominee played easily his best game last week against the Saints with 20 touches, eight marks and five goals. The 21-year-old has played every game since being reinstated to the side by Mark Neeld in Round 8 and could earmark himself as a goal-scoring midfielder.
William Hoskin-Elliott – Had a five-goal haul in the loss last week, providing support to their under-strength forward line. The 18-year-old wingman also had 16 touches and took four marks.
