Re: Who do YOU want EFC to draft at #5 in 2008?

Hurley or Ziebell sound good, but what about Neville Jetta? Been very impressed with the few games I have seen him play this year, reminds me of Lovett- could mean that we get a younger version of Lovett with similar pace and skills, and get another draft pick for Andrew.

Of course, I would still want Hurley ahead of them all and Ziebell not far behind him. Jetta might be one we could pick up with a draft pick from the previously mentioned Lovett trade?

Re: Who do YOU want EFC to draft at #5 in 2008?

I like the looks of Zeibell, if he could play across half back and act as our, say, quarterback (i don't like that term) and set up play, it would give us excellent rebounding out of the backline and hopefully be able to shut down a dangerous medium/small forward (Not too sure on his defensive skills tho). Being a midfielder also, would help in rotations. Thinking he could a better version of Nash.
Pass on using a 5th pick on a half back flanker:thumbsdown:

I know Zeibell can play other positions but we should not be using our first pick to find a good half back player.

For now Hurley is my choice.

A midfielder.

Just to use an example Tom Williams was pick 6 in 2004 and is just on the verge of breaking onto the scene. Can we wait that long?

Suffered a heck of a lot of injuries didn't he? Never had a good run of games to develop properly.

Out of the poll options - Nick Naitanui

Realistically - Michael Hurley / Hamish Hartlett

Re: Who do YOU want EFC to draft at #5 in 2008?

It realistically will depend on what Freo do with their pick. If Hartlett is available at our pick I believe he will be best suited to our needs. Him or Hurley will be fine. Personally though I would not be fussed if we took Tom Swift at 5.

What other defenders have gone top 5 and made any impact. Polak was 4 in the Judd/Hodge/Ball draft but started as a forward, took a while to play some decent football.

Re: Who do YOU want EFC to draft at #5 in 2008?

Our last pick at number 5 was... wait for it... Daniel McAlister... back in 1996...

Let's hope we do a LITTLE better this time. The likes of Lance Franklin, Scott Pendlebury, Jarrad McVeigh, Brock McLean & Luke Power have been drafted at pick 5 in recent years, so let's hope we can somebody of that sort of calibre (Franklin aside, the guy is just out of this world) and I think we'd be pretty content.

I wouldn't, simply because of needs. IMO we need Hurley more than we need Trengove, especially with Bellchambers impressing last game. Although with the Lovett up for trade we might be able to package him with our 3rd round draft pick for a mid range 1st round which I would jump at the chance for Trengove.

Trengrove is touted as a defender as well a ruckman. Going on prevous drafts when there was meant to be a good bunch off Ruckman coming into the draft like 2004 Wood, Maric, Deluca, Willtis, Meesan or 2006 Leuenberger, Sellar, Tippett, Hampson, Goldstein and Renouf. There always seems to be at least a couple that slid well below where they are predicted. Is there a chance that Vickery, McKernan or Trengrove go through to Essendon's 2nd pick or someone like Roughead is still around by Essendon's third pick?

please not neville jetta. he's about 4th round standard at best. soft, unaccountable - possibly another dean dick.

we don't need to replace lovett (if he's traded) anyway as we already have leroy jetta, davey and reimers coming thru. i see the sense in trading the troubled older player (lovett) out of this quartet.

Firstly, Tom Williams has been beset by injuries so far in his short career which doesn't help

Secondly, we WILL have to wait that long - Neagle and Gumby are still two seasons away from being reliable, consistent performers. Thankfully, Lloyd and Lucas are still around to take the pressure off. Either way we're going to lose over three of our greatest ever players in the next few seasons and we have to hope that the people we draft to fill their void are at the very least serviceable.

IMO Hurley will be the better backman and Trengove seems more suited to the ruck.

Re: Who do YOU want EFC to draft at #5 in 2008?

He was pick 6. big difference. And unleess my eyes deceived me when he was taking marks in the backline, and trying to nullify attacks on goal, I was under the distinct impression he WAS a defender. Wasn't he a running defender when we drafted him? With hopes that he could eventually become a mid.

Yes, correct on all accounts. I think Myers was recruited with the vision of him becoming a midfielder for Essendon. He gave us little signs this year that he could become a very serviceable midfielder. I think back to the Adelaide game at AAMI for example.

I thought he looked to have good poise and quite at home as a defender however, in the time he was playing. Perhaps we should not force the midfield on him too quickly, let him flourish as a defender, then start experimenting.

Trengove is a backman who pinch hits in the ruck.

Have you ever seen him play?

Seen him play for the cannons 4-5 times in 07, and not much else. Only making assumptions from limited time, when I watched him he seemed a bit out of depth down back with the exception of 3-4 contested marks, and alot better when he utilized his leap more in ruck.

His calmness was startling for such a young player. Seems very mature and has a good kick on him. Leadership material also which is good to know. Personally I'd like to see him play in the midfield and hopefully it fast tracks his development. We have plenty of players running off half back.

That's more than me as i have had to rely on descriptions of him, albeit from a very good judge.

I am yet to see him yet but he is a highly regarded defender.

Either way, it is going to be fantastic to see how he flourishes next year. Yet another exciting prospect. Perhaps cold be the best of all or younguns. Our next Brownlow Medalist. Dare I dream.
