Congrats to Barry Cable for being made a legend of the hall of fame. What has me annoyed is why there is never any mention of Michael Tuck being made a legend. He played a record amount of games, played in 7 premierships but he is never mentioned. Is it because he keeps a low profile?

It annoys me every year. Surely Tucky should be a legend in the hall of fame.

I hear you. But I'm sure his time will come.

Maybe it is because there is only 20-odd legends at the moment. Hawthorn FC alone have more than 20 players that could be inducted (easily). The AFL do not want any team having a overwhelming majority of players on the legends list.

Although, we all know our club would have the most by a mile.

Love Tucky, and he was amazing, and his time may come, but honestly, as a footballer, Jason Dunstall should be named a legend before Tuck.
With so few being given legend status it is not at all a slight against a player to not award him legend status.

Well. that is a matter of opinion. There are those who lived through both careers that would argue differently.

Both are worthy HOFers, though. The plumber and the bung.

Dunstall and Tuck are already HOFers.

Hawthorn already have 2 legends so it'll be a while before another is inducted. You'd imagine, to keep people quiet about 'fairness' amongst clubs, that the AFL will try to keep the legends from each club as even as possible for as long as possible.

Isn't there a limit to the number of legends? I thought there was a limit of 10% of the number of HOFs could be legends. Surely this will mean many who deserve the honour will be denied.

According to the AFL's website, there is a restriction that no more of 10% of the hall of famers can be named as Legends. Cable's elevation to the status of Legend actually takes the proportion to 10.05%. The AFL's website states that a person is "is selected for Legend status if [he has] caused the game to change significantly for the better".

Looking at Cable's record, I can understand why he was elevated to the status of Legend. Although I wasn't born when he did his best work, seeing the honours he earned in both the WAFL and the VFL suggests that he was amongst the top-shelf of players. He also coached (his record with North Melbourne is mediocre), which is something that Tucky never did at the highest level.

Thanks for that Dixie. Maybe to get the elevation to Legend a player has to have a reasonably high profile, even after their playing days.

As for Tucky he didn't even have a high profile when playing, just wracked up the numbers. If the system were based on Football alone, we would dominate, or am I being biased?

I can understand your passion all things Hawthorn, but record length of service does not nessarily equate to been a legend. We are talking about best of the best now, the absolute pinancle. He definately deserves to be in HOF, Hawks team of the century etc.

But in his time at the Hawks he was in the best half dozen players, but you could argue was never the best or 2nd best during his amazingly long, consistantly high output of service he gave.

Looking at only recent times in the AFL, there would be strong argument that Dunstall, Ablett, Lockett, Carey, Hird, Riccutto, Voss, Buckley all had careers with a greater impact in there time period. Brereton with under half the games he played compared to Tuck, also arguable a better player.

Tuck will have records that may conceivable last decades if not longer to come, or ever be beaten (most premierships, most GF, highest games/finals etc) I think personally he will never get that accolade.

From a somewhat a dodgy memory he also played a lot of Reserves games did he not? He also finished runner up to our B&F 5 or 6 times which is quite remarkable given the talent he played aside.

I consider Michael Tuck to be the most underrated player by the football community in history. Is a legend, should be inducted as such. May not have the individual accolades of some players, but football is a TEAM sport, and his team record is the BEST EVER by far. He is even underrated by Hawk people. So sad.

Was one of my favourites. Such an effective footballer

Michael Tuck doesn't need a ceremony to be made a legend, he was made a legend by his career. Same as Carey, Blight and all the others. If everyone knows they're a legend then they are. It's not like Barry Cable was merely well respected before last night.

Yeh think he played about 50 reserves games before getting a regular spot.Pretty good effort i reckon.

Fair call. he once Kicked a goal from inside the square at the G and also nearly hung on to an absolute hanger against the cats from memory that would have stood the ages.

He had a lean season where many called for his retirement before finishing in style.

Don't ever under estimate Tucky's ability, he was a hell of a player, not just someone who managed to hang around a long time. Remember he held his spot in the side as a ruck rover with some of the best mods in the game (Wallace, platten, Pritchard, Matthews, Eade, Dipper, Condon, Allen etc). We had heaps of good players, if he wasnt up to it he would have been replaced. Fair enough he never got a B and F but that's pretty understandable when you are playing in teams with Matthews, Knights, Hudson, Dunstall etc.

There is no way they'll put him in for ages though as with Hudson and Matthews already in there is will be too Hawks Dominate.

For the record, Hawks in AFL hall of fame

Graham Arthur
Gary Ayres
Dermott Brereton
Robert Dipierdomenico
Jason Dunstall
Darren Jarman
Chris Langford
Don Scott
Paul Salmon
Peter Knights
Michael Tuck
Kelvin Moore
Shane Crawford

Legends
Leigh Matthews
Peter Hudson

Coaches
Allan Jeans
John Kennedy
David Parkin

That's 18

Then there is Gary Ablett (6 games), Albert Chadwick (17), and Dan Minogue (1 game and 2 years as coach), who have had very limited Hawthorn involvement, but are listed Hawthorn regardless.

So that's 21, but I'd only count it as 18.

Not just a RR Bards, CHF in the 70's, CHB for a fair period prior to Mew, HBF for most of his last seasons - the bloke played so many spots, with distinction, it wasn't funny.

Can see both side of the argument.

Tuck would have made a very good 400 metre runner as well by all accounts, the old man once told me that as a distance runner his times at training in boots on grass were up with the Olympic team at that time

I loved the 91 flag when he completely smashed Turley who was the glamour boy of the time, who it was said had told him he was too old to keep up earlier that year
