Mick Malthouse's time up?

I think the Pies will be worse off next season, especially if Wakelin retires. They are too inexperienced to seriously challenge for a premiership. It will take 3-4 years for them to be a flag threat.

What Leigh Matthews said once you take a side to a grand final, it's hard to get back up to that. Pies made the grand final in 2002 and 2003, so I think Malhouse's time has past, he is getting older and that doesn't help at all. Buckley to take over. Time is everything in footy, better to leave a year too early, than a year too late.

But merely making the finals isn't enough to justify ongoing presence. If after a some time (and 9 years is certainly more than some) you haven't won it yet a club needs to get someone new.

They made two Grand Finals in that time. Unfortunately for them they just so happened to be coming up against the best team for the last however-many years.

No new coach would be able to get as much out of the players as Malthouse.

You aren't telling the whole story there.

We got rid of him so he could create "Manchester United on the Yarra". So far two grand finals and no flags. Time to give Mick the flick. No disrespect to Mick but he has never rebuilt a team to win flags in his career. With the Eagles he had a sensational group of kids to make him look good now he's failing to get the best out of some other group of kids.

Give Malthouse a break ! He got that ordinary list of players into the finals so he deserves to keep his job .and even a bonus on top .
No other coach would have much chance of getting such an ordinary bunch of players into the 8 .

Tonight showed how bad the Pies backline and midfield really is, Wakelin is finished O'brien is a battler at best Brown will possibly be a handy big man but is slow as a wet week and struggles against talls or smalls.

Their midfield is slow and pretty average .
the forward line is probably okay if Didak is kept ..and Cloke actually steps up..his kicking for goal for a key forward is woeful to say the least .

In the ruck they are lacking big time ..how Bryant gets a game amazes me, Josh Fraser is not much chop...where's Wood ???

Some big holes to be filled before Collingwood are any sort of contender.

arogant old fart who the game has gone past . time to move on and get someone whos passion is winning flags not just making the eight.

Surely no team would get rid of an experienced, premiership winning coach and replace them with a rookie coach that hasn't even been an assistant.

Oh wait...

Yep. Yep. Yep.

Plenty to worry about for Collingwood. We've just made our third finals series in a row with an incredibly young team.

It's amazing that all these teams who failed to make the finals bag us. I wonder if they'd say the same things about their teams if they were in our position?

You see its not about making the finals its about winning cups. If you dont win on the last day in september you may as well finish last like melbourne.

Similar to the Neale Daniher situation. He left midway through his 10th season after a 50-50 record and 6 years in the finals (and one GF appearance)

Malthouse has guided the Pies to a 50-50 record over 9 years, two GF appearances and 5 years in the finals.

I think he's a good coach, but the reality is, if you don't win a flag, eventually your time is up. He'll be given another year, maybe two. Eddie won't have the guts to sack him.

Neale wasn't so good at developing youngsters btw.
I think we are OK for another couple of years - our recruiting staff has proved that we can find some decent players, just see Clarke, Dawes, McCarthy, Goldsack, Cox, etc. Would like to think MM will be around for another 2/3 years, though who knows. Is he the man to take us to the flag? Probably not, but who knows. Not sure what the immediate future holds.

Daniher may not have had as many youngsters as Collingwood over the years but I think he still was ok at developing them. The problem ND faced was the pressure for the team to continually perform (to keep the club going) without building from the ground up.

Malthouse is the best coach in the league, if you look at the sides he has coached at Collingwood on paper nearly everyone has over achieved. His one glaring weakness is trading and the draft. He is perhaps too loyal to some players and won't let go some he should have

Mick will never win another premiership and it will be a few years before collingwood git in the grand final. there are many positions that need to be filled for the club to perform and mick doesn't seem to do well at picking needed players.
