Interested in people's thoughts on Mick Mansfield's career at Carlton (2000-2002).

I thought he was serviceable and had a good season in 2001. I thought he was a gun player at Geelong and he was past his best when he was traded to the Blues after his indifferent 1999 season.

I have number 21 on my first guernsey because of Mick Mansfield. Was a gun at Geelong. I didn't want to be a sheep with number 5 :) Pretty happy with the choice when we had Moons too.
Have a feeling 2015 may be a good year to pull that guernsey out of retirement ;)

Was always an angry man Micky Mansfield. Like Barry Stoneham he used to think it was a show of strength to dump a player who had just outmarked him or got a kick on him.

One thing Mick Mansfield can hold his head high about -is he was easily Geelongs best player in those 2 grand final debacles 1994 and 1995 . The club would have awarded a best Geelong player in those games i would assume -and i would be very surprised if he didnt win it both years -he was outstanding in both games -he really stood up to the pressure -wheres as a hell of alot of Geelong blokes didnt.

Mansfield was a really good hard Geelong player who coped with the pressure -no one could ever question his performaces or courage -and 7 second half goals at Victoria Park when moved to full forward wasnt a bad effort either

Like it, GOB.

Whenever my brother and I recall what it was like to support a Cats team that couldn't win when it really mattered he always brings up how good #21 was on both of those dark days.

It is a huge credit to Mansfield that he never dropped his head or his intensity in the midst of two immensely stultifying losses.

(singing) "Micky is still alright with me..."

When the 1994 final series was on -i was over in the West on work commitments

After Geelong had been totally and utterly demolished by 80 points in the GF by the Eagles-i was listening to the after game rap on their local radio over their . Peter Bosustow (ex Carlton) and some other bloke in the studio were reviewing the game . Ive never forgotten what Bosustow said -" Mansfield -how good was his game -he was magnificent". To have that said about you by a former top line player -after your team has been totally destroyed -i dont think you can get much higher praise than that.

My favourite player behind Hocking in that era. He punctured a lung in the QF and did more damage running out on the ground to celebrate Bill's goal. Rushed back for the Prelim against North and then the one image I remember of the 1994 GF was him sobbing after working so hard so try and get that flag. That shit ain't fair.

Didn't Freo go for him at the same time Carlton did?

To play a good game Micky had to be 'on'.
Because if he got the fumbles we were toast.

He always seemed to play well against the blues though, which is why (I assume) they went for him.
Clubs always seemed to like players that played well against them back then.

I think you'll find that was his debut game, I remember Peter McKenna who was commentating at the time raving about him. I did like him as a player.

What about Brownless? Took a spectacular mark in the 94 GF and kicked three in junk time in 95
Yeah I was going to say Brownless - I was at the match, but due to a mix up with some friends, ended up with one of those cardboard trays with 4 schooners of full strength beer before the game which had to be consumed relatively quickly lest they go warm, and nobody likes warm beer. Set the tone for the match and considering what has happening on field, was the best decision I could have made. So not really the best judge.

Brownless was good in 1994, and for once actually put in all day. He was abysmal in the other 3 though.
