How does this work? Why wouldnt Port Magpies get De Luca instead of Maric. Is there no affiliation now between Port Magpies and Port Power?

Er no. They've "drafted" Tyson Stenglein and Scott Stevens in the past too. Seems like they just pick the player that best fits.....in theory at least.

Its because the Magpies are extremely annoying.

Obviously they think Maric is clearly the better player. They are both ruckmen and if it was lineball they surely would have picked the Power player.

This must be the case. I was very surprised to see the Magpies pick up Maric instead of De Luca - obviously thinkning he is the better player despite being picked lower.

Perhaps they thought that Maric would play more SANFL games than De Luca however De Luca will find it tough to break into the Power's ruck stocks this year. Or maybe they are thinking of using Maric up forward and they don't think De Luca could play that role?

I dont get the SANFL clubs, why not try and develop your club to have closer ties to one of the afl clubs. I am not saying they should only deal with one club but try to develop ties to one club.

Port magpies should pick a power player no matter what, the kid would train at alberton all week so he would be aware of how to play at alberton oval.

North should have picked a power player as they already have so many in there team, at least the new kid would know some faces when he goes out on saturday for a game.

Sturt now that all there kids are at port they might as well draft port players.

Central to do port purely on location, but as only three players from port they would have to pick up a crow.

West should pick crows players as they tend to develop players for the crows, rehn, modra, roo, edwards....

Eagles, Glenelg, south and Norwood should work with the crows.

Having said this Glenelg should have picked Maric. Port could then have picked Willitts, West should have grabbed Nye, North could then have got Ezard.

Is this logic or am I living in my own dream world.

Quite frankly I don't see how aligning the players with the Father & Son aligned clubs will make any difference. The most important thing is that the player plays in a position of need by the club & gets a fair go for their development.

So you're against the minidraft then?

Griffin would have to be bloody amazing for Centrals to be the best club for him to be at. How good can you get on the bench for the ressies?

I'm reasonably happy with this - The Count should walk straight into the Panther midfield - Meeson at Norwood is a good fit...Griffen is an interesting one at Centrals - might not get too many opportunities - and the "real Port Adelaide" obviously see something in Mad Maric. I think Knights at the Eagles is the only worry given their already strong midfield.

LOL yes testing times for Griffen, I reckon he can really cement his spot in the ressies tho, and provide some handy tall backup if one of our bigmen goes down, noteably Scoullar. Has plenty of talent, quite happy with that.

What I was saying is that I don't believe that it make any difference if the Port/Crows players go to Port/Crows SANFL F&S-aligned clubs. It is more crucial that they go to a(ny) club who has a need for their type of player & they get fair opportunities.

Willits to Glenelg just shouldn't have happened. I'd be surprised if he has a single Power teammate in any SANFL game he plays this year...with these incoming 18 year olds, I don't see how that could be considered a good thing for development & well-being at all.

Maybe Maric was picked as someone ready to lead the ruck at senior level from round 1 and they think Fabian will take a bit more time (he's a year younger so it wouldn't be that surprising).

SANFL clubs have to pick what's best for them

I wouldn't be against these young fellas being drafted in pairs to try and solve this problem. I don't think it's the club they go to that is the problem - it's the support network (or lack of) in the first instance.

For example....Norwood must pick 2 from either the Power or AFC....then South have to pick 2 from the other AFL side - and so it goes on.

Sure - that means the top 4 or 5 sides don't get a pick - but seriously - does Centrals' flag defence depend on getting the services of Griffen next year ?

I think there would be a lot of benefit to the boys - going back in pairs - having a mate both at AFC and local training.....maybe living together etc...both Pap and AFC development people would feel a little easier knowing they can support each other. SANFL clubs lower on the ladder could use emerging talent...but at the same time it wouldn't be enough to unbalance the competition.....Positives for players + AFL + SANFL clubs IMO.
Maybe worth a thought.

Drop the Cornes boys & Salopek back to the Bays & all will be OK! :p

That’s why the Adelaide Football Club have to take more control of their OWN player’s interest first. You’re exactly right, SANFL clubs have to pick a player that is going to help them not anyone else.

The benefits of developing closer links with one club;

1) The player has the advantage of going to a club where he will already know some of the players he will play with as he trains with them all the time. This must be an advantage to the player in helping him adapt to to his new SANFL club. (ie if north picked up a power kid he would already know white, peel, gilham)

2) The AFL club gets the advantage of being able to more easilly compare how individual players are developing.

3) The SANFL club benefits by the player being able to adjust better, on selection night if they only have to wait for one afl team to tell them who is available.

Note I dont want to formalise the arrangement so that youngsters have to swap local clubs.
