If you call getting out the back and sprinting 100m to get on the end of a fast break a seagull I guess... Honestly thought he worked harder than the rest of our forward line combined.
Spot on. He works his arse off and maybe makes an error or two but he also has the attention of one of the oppositions best 2 defenders so you can't expect perfection everytime the ball goes forward. He is well worth his place on his games to date and he is still a bit off with his touch so will get better as he goes into the season.

But he didnt work hard, thats why people are mentioning him. The times he got the goals over the back was because he stood still while his opponent ran forward, then when it turned over he was by himself. When he led to the ball to take marks he was soft. He took one decent contested mark from memory and the rest of the time he flopped around and fell over while the Hawks players kept their feet and walked away with the footy out of our backline. He wasnt the worst but he was a long way from good.
I'm glad you mentioned Hawk's players because that was what was happening most of the time. He was battling 2 or 3 opposition players by himself. By the way, I recorded the game to watch today and there is no question on Darling's work rate. First rate.

The thing about darling is: if we had demanded that judd play as a kpf theres a good chance that he may not be remembered as the star he was.

Chances are if we got nn to play as a small forward he prob wouldnt have won aa.

Yet we get a forward flanker in darling and constantly demand that he play chf and wonder why he sucks.

We really are pants on head stupid arent we.
it's more so the way he goes about things as opposed to the things he is doing

The problem with trading Darling is we only have Lamb to replace him. If you don't like the way Darling gives up in contests or gets cheap goals in the goal square then you won't like Lamb. You'll be pining for Darling after 20 minutes.
What does Waterman project to be in your opinion? I mean he's obviously not going to a 2nd key forward but neither is Darling really imo. Are we worse off or better if we were to trade Darling for a decent mid, lure Mitch McGovern back and play him and Waterman in the forward line with Kennedy?

Players like Darling don't grow on trees.

He actually looks bulky and has lost a bit of speed/agility.

Needs to get slimmer - watch his debut year - was a super player.

I wasn't too keen on Waterman, played as a tall in colts but no where near tall enough to do that at AFL. Not sure if he can change to a Hill or LeCras type forward which he will have to be.

That's if he gets back on the track, I've heard his injury is very serious.

Out of his moonboot supposedly.

I haven't watched a replay, don't know if I will (too painful), but I seem to remember Duggan having a go but being pretty unclean and fumbly, not having the strength, pace or skill to get free too often, and even when he did his kicks weren't spot on. He seems to have regressed to me, has had a number of injuries and lacking confidence. Not quite sure where his position is, he doesn't appear to have the pace for outside (although Masten and Gaff have played a lot of outside games lacking pace) or the strength for inside. I still think he can make it though.

I feel we need to give Duggan a fair go ,at least he will put his body on the line and can kick he is just getting used to the tempo of afl a fair bit quicker that WAFL ,after all how long have we given Masten to come good

I agree with you, I think there's a good chance he will become a good player and deserves a fair go. Masten was given a long time, I was a supporter of his but I am not now. Masten has reached his ceiling and it's not very high unfortunately, but I think Duggan has significantly more potential than Masten, much more rounded and skilled player and not so limited by his size (or is it his heart?) as Masten is.

Whenever I watch an eagles game and I'm supporting you guys, there are two things that I can never get my head around..

1) How Chris Masten ever made it as an AFL player
2) How Jack Darling had regressed from genuine exciting prospect to an absolute spud.

I said on a previous thread after possibly the Richmond game, that Darling may be the least clutch player in the comp, and he just proves it time and time again. On Sunday when you guys had some momentum late in the third, Darling has a set shot 25 out on a 45 degree angle, misses, hawks take the ball straight into their forward line, goal. Momentum killer. Game over.

He just finds a way to kill you guys and I was wondering how long it will take before something is done I.e. dropping, trading etc?

i really liked the look of Duggan last year also but looked like he hasn't progressed this year?

Masten has an excellent right foot passing kick which is why he made it. Is also quite fit but anyone can develop fitness I guess.
Darling is a good 2nd forward. He just makes some very dumb mistakes and never seems to learn from them. Also seems to choke under pressure. Why has this not been coached out of him?

Duggan is a spud. No speed. No strength. Kicking is average (supposed to be his strength). Has no great attributes.

To me it seems like coaches have been really poor. Which players have improved over the last 4-5 years other than draftees?

Prettu spot on.

Duggan's had injuries every preseason I believe, well, coming backnfrom a PCL last season. Still very bottom aged so need to be patient as I'm sure he'll come good. Just needs a clean run at it and to fix his disposal/not be played out of position which this club seems to like doing to young players.

It's an interesting exercise to go back over the past few years and compare games played for all draftees from all clubs. It is surprising that our kids are no worse than most. There are very few who have been played consistently and I think maybe we expect too much. Then again, maybe it's just that we are so desperate for someone to help Shuey in our one paced midfield that we put a lot of pressure on these kids in terms of expectation. Duggan will be fine. There were several times on the weekend where he made good position but was either ignored or put under pressure from poor disposal

Wash out your mouth with soap mate. Duggan was in our top 5 on the weekend and will get better and better

That's not true, this is from 2011 draft onwards up until a couple of weeks ago. There are plenty of guys from most teams that have come on well. In that time we've given Hutchings quite a few games and that's about it.

Shows me we need a look at where it is going wrong, recruitment or development.

Same should apply to Partington. The Wafl watchers say he lacks impact. But at least he is finding the ball and can kick a goal. He would be no worse than Masten if he took his place and could play his role. But at least he is young and has potential and probably some hunger to succeed.

oh FFS now we even have the Lavenders coming on here with list advice.
