Alan Richardson to Essendon and suddenly their kids are playing some really good football..... Much the same as ours when Richo was with us.... How did we let a good collingwood man end up at Essendon? He worked wonders with our kids, the likes of Goldsack, Thomas etc, and now we have Goldsack really struggling and not showing much at all, and Thomas struggling more than when Richo was with us...

It has nothing to do with Richo.

He was great for us and he set up our development academy.

However, he isn't responsible for Essendon's game plan. They have been playing, fast, run, carry, daring and corridor football for some time now. It is Matthew Knights' game plan.

Sure, he has got their kids playing some good footy, yet do we honestly believe they are a better side than us? Short answer, no.

Mick has better talent at his disposal, yet his flawed game plan is hurting us.

The Bombers have had an enormous amount of luck too. They beat an undermanned Hawks, they beat Carl and Coll because these two sides wasted opportunities and they were good against the Saints because of an extra 3 days recovery.

They are a team on the up and Richo is having an impact down there, however, ultimately, he is not responsible for the game plan that Matthew Knights is implementing.

I agreed with DPP in the OP, but then DT13 made a good point.

But I still believe we shouldn't have let such a resourceful Collingwood man leave this club. If he wanted a more intimate or high-paying role at this club, it should've been given to him, instead of letting him go to a rival club. They didn't see what losing Swann to Carlton did?

As I said in another thread, they're stubborn, pig-headed bunch that are running this footy club. Harden up and make the tough decisions!

everyone is going on about Bucks being the next coach but i could seriously see Alan Richardson as a contender for the job.

if he doesnt get the gig at Collingwood i can see him being appointed head coach at another club over the next couple of years

I definitely agree we should be taking the "Sir Alex Ferguson approach" in regards to allowing our personnel to join our rival clubs, however, it is very difficult to keep staff, particularly if they wish to move for a new challenge which was the case with all 3 of Swann, Arocca and Richo.

It's still a positive though. It means we employ the best people for the job and in the case of them leaving us, we are in a healthy position when they are doing so. It's not as if they are abandoning us or jumping ship. That's business and life. People want different challenges and new opportunities.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk of Richardson as next Pies coach on this board.

I reckon he'd be fantastic. If Bucks doesn't want it, he'd be my second choice.

I am certainly on the line of thinking that Essendon's improvement has far more to do with the players getting used to and being able to execute the game plan better rather then an improvement drastically from players due to richo.

We have had both Beams and Sidebottom come in and play this year and as has been mentioned Goldsack was poor last year too.

Richo was great for us but we still have development coaches and I don't think you can really draw a line between our poor preformances and Essendon's good ones.

I reckon we should have moved mountains to keep Richardson but to be fair Sidebottom and Beams are doing as well as Thomas and Pendlebury did in their first year. The biggest determinant is the quality of the player. That's not to say you don't have to do a lot of develoment work and Richardson did an excellent job with our youth.

I don't know what it is but some assistant coaches move around more than others. Whether it's because they get a few noses out of joint or just look for a new challenge.

Richardson has been with Richmond/Coburg, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood and now Essendon.

Terry Daniher was similar and I'm sure there are a few others.

The loss of Alan Richardson has come back to bite us.

Another typical example of why Malthouse should go is the exit of Alan Richardson who helped with the development of of our younger players, has caused our youth development to slide.
All he wanted at Collingwood was to widen his role a little more and Malthouse diidn't want that.It is so obvious that Malthouse always gets rid of people he feels could threaten his position.
Look at the way the Bombers youth are playing all thanks to Alan Richradson.
Malthouse the countdown to your departure is ticking !

Re: The loss of Alan Richardson has come back to bite us.

I think maybe Malthouse's stubborness and what not might work well at some other club thats not us, but I feel even our players are getting bored and irritated because its the same old thing every year.

The loss of Alan Richardson has effected our youth group but on the upside Beams, Rusty & Macaffer all seem to be very promising.

Lets just keep our fingers crossed and pray to the football gods that we don't have another mediocre Malthouse year ahead of us next year.

Re: The loss of Alan Richardson has come back to bite us.

instead of blaming the coach how about some of the players standing up.so the reason we are not playing well this year is that alan richardson isnt there , give me a break.

Re: The loss of Alan Richardson has come back to bite us.

Richo betrayed us, he can only redeem himself by providing some quality F/S selections! :D

Nah, I dare say he left a pretty solid system behind, and Luke Beveridge is a very worthy replacement. I don't think that anyone thinks that Beams and Sidebottom are the reason we're 3-5 at this stage, and frankly that should be 5-3 anyway.
