You're right, he'll take a Gunston or Darling and make them pay with superb use of the ball. Failing that during a game he can always swing forward. Let's not forget he's only 22 with a broken leg and shoulder reco behind him.

In case you're not aware, I'm one that has consistently gone into bat for Brown.

I consider it highly unlikely that Brown will forge a career as a 3rd tall defender. For one thing, most successful 3rd tall defenders are both (1) versatile enough to play on smalls also (2) former very successful key position defenders. Brown is certainly not the former and I'd argue won't be the latter.

Most likely outcome I see at this stage is Brown requesting a trade and getting a decent run at another club in the position he plays well: 2nd or 3rd tall forward. If we refuse to trade him again this year and insist on playing him back again in 2014 with little senior experience that will just about be the end of him because his currency as a player will be destroyed.

Brown is listed at 196 and 92, while Lonergan is at 197 and 93.

On that basis, Brown does not lack size. On what I saw in the VFL yesterday, it's not inconceivable that he is Lonergan's heir apparent.

That's what CS has said too.

Graeme Hick board------------------------------------->
I always thought Brown was more like Jamie Siddons myself.

Then again, Brown (like Hick) did get a crack at the highest level.

Siddons didn't.

Stuart Law maybe...

Brown is already of negligible trade value. Besides, Geelong seem to take an almost compassionate stance at the negotiation table when it comes to these fringe players, as the trade usually benefits the player more than the club they're exiting. We haven't received much for Djerrkura, Laidler, Mumford, etc in recent years.

I dont think we even used the DJ and laidler picks we received.
Mumford on the other hand got us fair compo in pick 28

Djerrkura quit AFL football after a few years at the doggies. Always thought he had potential but just goes to show not everyone makes it in the big time. Brown continues to be a good VFL player but not a good AFL one. That is the problem.

which is fine if so. the reality is it's a team sport and the needs of the team are greater than those of the individual. unfortunately we don't need or have a spot for a third tall forward, but we need a young key defender to come through.

FWIW I think Brown can still make it in that role, he has the ability and was very good again yesterday. whether he has the self belief and whether the coaches believe in him I don't know, but he can play. and the critical question is whether he can progress quickly enough as a defender for them to decide not to trade him at year's end.

Not to mention the other factor - injury. If either Taylor or Lonegan get injured, he's the next key defender. That's reality right now. At least he's playing the same position week in week out at the moment.

Mitch Duncan? Going to be a better player than all three listed and probably is already.

Currency as a player, not in a trade. There's a difference.

The next young key defender to come through isn't on our list yet.
