Toast Mitch Duncan

Thought Mitch was fantastic tonight. Made a couple of skill errors at times but also did some great things with the ball, and his hardness at the contest, and footy smarts to get to the right positions was fantastic. Think he will play a lot of senior footy this year. Not sure who's spot he'll take, but on tonight's form he'll definitely be there round 1. Go Mitch.

I rate this kid really high and could never understand why Thompson would suddenly drop him last year, as far as young talent he is probably the 3rd best i have seen at the Cattery in 20 years behind J Selwood and James Kelly so expecting big things from Duncan this year.

Yeah I was a bit pissed off when bomba dropped him last year when he was playing well

For me the highlight of the night was the inventive and gutsy play of Steve Johnson at stoppages and in general play and the determined play of Mitch Duncan these two were my best.

A big wrap for Dawson Simpson showed me he's got the goods and can take a mark, a great second half, thought our ruckman had the better, well done West as well.

Agreed. He has adapted to the level well , looks to be able to handle the pace and strength of the game and gets to positions which allows him to gain possession.
Others will develop at their own speed but Duncan should be in our side every week now , in a way similar to Varcoe was , even if his form drops he should be nurtured and played. He and his like are our future and he , two seasons in a row , has put up his hand as the obvious pick to start our refreshment.

Because Bomber couldn't bear to drop any of his favourites, two tiered selection policy and all that. If you want to have more faith in Mitch playing more games this year, this was Scott post match last night:

Scott lauded the efforts of impressive youngster Mitch Duncan and Steven Motlop, both of whom may find themselves playing senior football early in the season,

''We are going to expose some inexperienced players to AFL footy this year. But we're going to do it on merit. And there were quite a few players out there tonight that showed enough to suggest they deserve a spot in a real AFL game this year.''

Scotty said as much again in an interview that I heard this morning on SEN. Seemed to suggest that on form Mitch Duncan had penciled himself in for a start in round one.

We may be disappointed in the end result of last night (and Scott did not make any excuses), but I think that he was happy to get a good look at the young players who may push up this year. I was disappointed that a few young players have not been fit to take the field so that we can have a look at them.

Weston, Vardy in particular, and Drum come to mind. And I would have like to have seen Walker but I suspect that the young tall is a fair way off yet.

Funny you mention that because as I was finding my seat last night I almost ran straight into (I was in a rush) Nathan Vardy who has noticeably bulked up (either that I was just a bit scared), he was sitting with Weston, Bathie, a guy who looked like Schroder, and Drum was there too. No sign of Walker.

Back on topic, very happy with Mitch. Apart from talent, his media interviews indicate he's steeled himself attitude wise to break in the side and stay there...I hope a few more of our young players have this attitude as it will be good for the group.

could never understand why Thompson would suddenly drop him last year,

I think it was the old school Kevin Sheedy approach. Give a kid a taste and throw him back to the reserves. Encourage him to work harder for his spot.
