Most Unlucky Individual in the AFL system?

Think Mathhew Egan and then add a turbo and you have Neale Daniher. Along with John Greening would have been a superstar of the game. Had the ability to be up with James Hird as a player if not cut down by 4 knee recos in the 80's when recovery much tougher.

Debut in 1979 18 y 44d and won equivalent of Rising Star
1980 Season 2 19 yo playing for the state team
1881 Season 3 20yo State team again and Ess B&F, named captain for following season

Did 1st knee early 82

Essendon flags 84, 85 and 93 and he should have played in those. If the had him they might of also won more. Would have been their best player through that era

Looks like he could time travel too. ;).

That ball bounce for Milne was unlucky.
And he had the chance of kicking possibly the winning goal in 2009, only to kick a grubber that Scarlett was able to rush through for a behind

Nathan Brown deserves a mention arguably the best footballer in the game at the time breaks a leg never really came back from that.
Jason Snell also rates a mention broke his lower leg and I believe these days his ankle is fused he can't even run.
Corey McKernan missed the rising star award because he had been suspended for tripping by hand which was only around for a short time and missed the Brownlow for a rather soft kneeing that didn't have any impact.

Hawthorn's Peter Knights missed about 6 games in 1976 due to injury and came second in the brownlow that year, 3 votes behind the winner.

Still remember the sight of his foot dangling

I tend to think more of people who have been scapegoated for no great reason which is something that always happens in sport.

James Hird comes to mind, not that I particularly like him.

Tony Modra. Missed the 1997 GF with injury (after playing 25 games for the year), and missed the 1998 GF because, in his absence, Blight came up with a different winning formula that didn't need him.

And then tried his luck at Fremantle.

Matthew Primus was pretty unlucky, a star for port, was made captain, injuries plagued his career, missed the 2004 GF through injury, retired.

Then was made coach, was offered no support, no experienced assistant coaches to guide him, barely any money in the footy department, with a shocking list, and was fired 1 and a half year into his career. Then went to the Gold Coast where he is an assistant coach.

Don’t forget as a star ruck the afl changed the rules to lessen his dominance.

The modern day equivalent would be telling Riewoldt he isn’t allowed to jump for marks anymore.

Mark Williams. Captain of Collingwood who he should have won a premiership with. Leigh Matthews thought he had the last laugh until Port was gifted the 2004 premiership.
