Eagles locked on McCarthy

EAGLES FIRM FOR TALENTED TIGER

RICHMOND VFL prospect Tom McCarthy is widely expected to be taken as the No.1 pick in next Wednesday night's AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft, with West Coast now guaranteed to hold the first selection.

As revealed on AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable last month, the 24-year-old McCarthy has long been viewed among AFL recruiters as the top prospect in this season's mid-year rookie pool.

The 187cm midfielder, who is also capable of playing across half-back, continued to impress at VFL level at the weekend to finish with 24 disposals and three clearances in Richmond's two-point loss to North Melbourne.

Subiaco's 20-year-old key forward Archer May is another likely to go early, with the 198cm goalkicker attracting interest from North Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood among others.

Essendon has tracked 27-year-old Claremont tall Oliver Eastland as it searches for potential ruck depth, while 20-year-old North Adelaide ruck Alex Van Wyk is another tall prospect that clubs have watched.

North Adelaide forward Ewan Mackinlay also has fans, with Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs linked, while Carlton has been strongly paired with Norwood small forward Jacob Newton.

Gold Coast has been linked with high-flying forward Caleb Lewis after an exciting stint with Dingley in the Southern Football Netball League, while the Suns have also monitored Eastern Ranges defender Rod Ali.

Richmond VFL forward pair Massimo Raso and Sam Toner, and Peel Thunder midfielder Michael Sellwood are others that clubs have tracked closely through the start of the season. – Riley Beveridge
That’s fine
Archie May ours

Then second pick a small forward (raso or szekely or toner)

Agreed. The issue is that we already have 5 blokes with zero games to their name and another 3-4 with under 3 games, and most of them aren't banging the door down to play any time soon. Most of them are "project players". Adding two more of that type to our list would make it even more unbalanced than it already is
Yep no more project players. We need walk up best 22 to create competition for spots.

Wouldnt it be a bit weird for us to get May and Trembath GR? Unless we want to get Trembath playing in defence again, maybe?
Well at this stage, May hasn't nominated. Still has time but it's a wait and see. Trembath is more speculation, nothing concrete there.

Assuming we use two picks and after spending 13 minutes looking at vids, I hope we go:

McCarthy
McCartin

Of course I also hope Aidan nominates us next year so we can also have:

McCartney

(Actually being serious)
Big Mac, middy Mac , and snack Mac to go with happy meal?

Dumb question for our experts Souup roos_fanatic08 Sphynx hoffseason gains 01 , anyone on that list you are genuinely surprised about and think they will get drafted?
Mid-season is a genuine crapshoot as to who will get drafted really list need / role based outside of the first couple.

I am surprised that Tom Williamson has nominated, absolutely taking the P155 at local level as an ex-AFL level, but didn’t think he’d ever want to play afl again tbh.

Anyone reckon Jovan Petric could be an option? Gives Jack Gunston vibes, can mark and kick. Was big on him in his draft class, but he has slipped through completely and playing for Williamstown.

Which clubs would go after

May,

Sellwood,

Szekley

McCartin

with their picks...and where does our 2nd pick lie in relation to MSD order.

Could Szekley get to us with our 2nd pick or will he be gone by then seeing as Raso is also in the small forward mix..

2nd pick? I’ve missed something?

Isn’t Williamson averaging like high 40’s possessions and 4 goals per game? Wild stats at any level.

Well that sure is putting the McCart before the horse.

I notice there is a Tadgh McCarthy there as well. May as well grab him too.

There's a bit in the HS about Williamson today. Interesting read.

Mid season draft fancy Michael Sellwood did his best work in this game through the middle two quarters where he was extremely influential as the WAFL built a big lead over their SANFL rivals. Sellwood has taken more marks than anyone in the WAFL this year and watching him play you can see why as his best attributes show up in that stat. He positions himself assertively and comes off his man to impact third up in the air, taking intercept marks or disrupting with spoils, and he works extremely hard in transition to find space and offer himself as an outlet for his teammates.

On a day when the Geelong defence was under siege for much of the game and many of the Hawks forwards were running rampant, MSD prospect Charlie McCartin was one of few Cats players to leave with his reputation not just intact but enhanced. Looking like a copy of his brother Tom, he rarely gave his direct matchup anything and regularly came off his man to try and help out third up. His intercept marking was a feature and his disposal coming out of defence was tidy and constructive.

Strong hands for a mid sized defender. I'd be really happy with him if the Eagles take McCarthy at 1.
