A little early, but off from work with an injury over the weekend so what the hell.
1. MELBOURNE - JACK WATTS
Worst kept secret in football will be announced. They need a lot of players in a wide variety of positions, but to get a key forward would be top of that list as you wont want your team going into a season with Brad Miller as your number one forward. Watts is a star, a little aloof but has tremendous skill and nous.
2. WCE - DANIEL RICH
The Eagles will obtain Rich to go along with their already young developing midfield and knowing this club wil be back in the finals hunt sooner rather than later. Rich is a high possession combative midfielder and will develop into a leader of that club.
3. FREMANTLE - HAMISH HARTLETT
A lot of mocks have Freo taking Naitanui but I think with Carr, Bell, McManus etc all departing, their midfield needs the most attention. Hamish will be an asset particularly on a ground like Subiaco. He is inside and outside, his skills are decent at the moment but with more strenght in his legs I see him developing his kicking skills to elite. Hamish is very clever and smart around the packs and has leadership attributes.
4. PORT ADELAIDE - JACK ZIEBELL
I have heard that the goal posts have shifted down at Alberton and the strong word is that Jack has gone to the top of the wishlist. People will argue that a ruckman is what Port Adelaide need but that can be taken care of later as Port feel Ziebell will be the best player taken from this draft. A midfielder/ forward that has a presence about him and probably along with Mitch Banner, the best leadership qualities.
5. ESSENDON - NICK NAITANUI
Okay here's the thing. The drama will unfold and I expect extra time to be taken with this selection. The draft has not panned out what Essendon thought and the guy they rated at number 2 is available for them. What do they do? Like Ryder they will feel compelled by Nicks athletic attributes and his potential to play CHB. With Ryder and Naitanui the Bombers have very good athletic talls that will take them far. Will become a cult hero at a great club like Essendon.
6. CARLTON - MICHAEL HURLEY
The football Gods have worked for Carlton and the Naitanui slide has helped them get the man they want. With the midfield progressing very well, Hurley can slot down back pretty much straight away. He is super composed, very smart and good one on one. Unlike Essendon taking their time in their selection, Wayne Hughes will be falling over himself in calling out his name.
7. BRISBANE - STEELE SIDEBOTTOM
Voss has made his attention known and wants runners and he gets one here with amazing class. The man with the second best name in football (Cooper Cronke) will be a star up in Queensland. Sidebottom has risen up the rankings lately and after the draft camp will rise some more.
8. RICHMOND - TYRONNE VICKERY
Like Carlton, the draft has been kind to Richmond and they get the man they want to address their major need. Not only is Vickery a very good ruckman (IMHO the best in this draft) but is more than handy up forward. He plays like a young Peter Everitt/Brad Ottens and that will be a great asset for Richmond with their developing midfield. With vickery they feel the pieces are starting to fall into place.
9. NORTH MELBOURNE - SAM BLEASE
North want some classy runners to be injected into their side and they find a very good one in Blease. The guy is class personafide and can turn a game at a drop of a hat. Can also go missing for a time in the game but once he bulks up his slight frame that will improve. Having Brent Harvey as am mentor will be super for Sam.
10. ADELAIDE - LEWIS JOHNSTON
I think with all the top tier midfielders gone now from the draft, Adelaide will go for needs and getting the local boy Johnston will address that. He is very bottom age and will be put in the development basket for a year or two, but he has class and poise and Adelaide feel he will suit their need for an ideal KPP.
11. COLLINGWOOD - STEVE HILL
The Pies want quick midfielders. Unfortunately for them this draft has been unkind to them and they would of hoped one of Sidebottom/Blease would have fallen to them. They didn't and now their choice is a very light but super skilled and quick midfielder in Hill. The guy will need a lot of development put into him but at Collingwood that should not be a problem. This guy has a super motor, reads the play very well and has good footy nous and toughness.
12. SYDNEY - MITCH BROWN
The Swans pull a major surprise but get a player that is flying up the rankings in Brown. Absolutely dominated school footy then went and continued that late on in the season at Sandringham. A bonafide CHF with super courage and great hands will be an asset for a Swans team needing a KP Forward. His state screening will have a lot of teams keeping a close eye on him but the Swans will pounce.
13. ST.KILDA - CHRIS YARRAN
The Saints need a midfielder, and someone with pace. Again this draft hasn't fallen the way it wanted to so they take the next best player on their list. With Yarran they could be getting the absolute steal of the draft, he is a half forward player with X factor and goal kicking ability. In a forward line with Riewoldt and Yarran there is plenty to like about it. They would also hope he can develop into a part time midfielder. Saints would of loved a Blease or Sidebottom but they will make do with Yarran.
14. WESTERN BULLDOGS - AYCE CORDY
They are forced to give up their first rounder for this special talent. They wont mind as it takes care of a need. With young Cordy they may have to wait a couple of years but it will be a perfect timing replacement for when Ben Hudson retires. A great get and some would consider still a steal at this position.
15. HAWTHORN - JACKSON TRENGOVE
A special athlete that will be just what the Hawks may be after. There are not too many holes to fix but a athletic tall backman may be one of them. With Thorpe and Trengove being groomed for Key Back positions along with Murphy and Gilham the future does look very bright. At a pinch Jackson can also play ruck, absolute steal to get here and dont be suprised if he is gone inside the top 10.
16. GEELONG - TOM SWIFT
This pick just makes too much sense for mine. He would of gone top 10 if he was healthy, alas Geelong add to their steals. He is a big midfielder with good skills and a big motor. Super impressive at under 16 level but if the medical reports are right he may go earlier. At the Cats he can be developed at a slower, steadier pace which may get the best results.
17. MELBOURNE - DAVID ZAHARAKIS
With Watts secured Melbourne now turn their attention to best available and for them it comes with some pace and motor. David was very good in the champs and will provide the Demons great midfield drive and run.
18. WEST COAST - MATTHEW BROADBENT
A new age type who is suited to the run and carry of Subiaco and will develop into dashing defender for the Eagles. Was impressed with his championship and has the ability to "shut down" players and also get a lot of the ball himself. I think he would be a great fit for the new look Eagles outfit.
19. MELBOURNE - NICK HEYNE
Again the Dees go for best available and add a great bit of midfield class to their list. Is an outside player with great skill, vision and smarts and something the Demons will find appealing in their quest to re-build the list.
20. WEST COAST - CLANCEE PEARCE
West Coast go for a utility here with great upside. He has the ability to play half back or through the midfield. Decent pace, he's a player who can find the ball and get a lot of it. Good skills and one for the future.
21. FREMANTLE - MICHAEL WALTERS
With the retirement of Farmer they get a kid that can fit into that role, but also go into the midfield. He has some great talent, with fantastic hands and good pace. Will be an exciting addition to a Fremantle list taking a whole new shape.
22. PORT ADELAIDE - SHAUN MCKERNAN
Some may consider a steal, but after passing up on Naitanui and Vickery to go for a midfielder they will feel obliged to take a forward/ruckman with this pick. Shaun will be a pinch hit ruckman who plays predominately up forward, he can take a contested grab and kick the ball a mile.
23. ESSENDON - MITCH ROBINSON
With Essendon taking the big Nat with it's first pick, they go for a ready made midfielder who will provide them another option straight away. Robinson has good aerobic capabilities, finds alot of the ball and has played against men all year. Some say he doesn't have much upside left but I disagree, after a couple of AFL pre seasons I expect his kicking to become better and he has the potential in his body to be a massive midfielder. Also very disciplined and can play a role for Knights.
24. CARLTON - AARON CORNELIUS
They now have a draft which fixes their bookends for a while. Cornelius is a dangerous CHF/FF who will compliment Fevola and the gang down in that forward line. The Bles believe their midfield is super and this draft will address some needs for them, and with Cornelius and Hurley it has done so.
25. BRISBANE - NICK SUBAN
Again the Lions go for a midfielder type, Suban is a good kick of the ball, he's tough, disciplined and hard at it. Can do a job on small forwards or go and do and be a ball getting midfielder. Has very good leadership qualities and one the Lions may think highly of.
26. RICHMOND - MITCH BANNER
The Tigers get a ball winning, clearance machine they are looking for. Mitch has the ability to contribute straight away and will be valuable in the clinches to feed the likes of Deledio, Cotchin, Foley, Edwards in the future. I rate him as having one of the best leadership skills, he will develop into a fine leader down at Punt Road. With Kane Johnson at the end, he will slot in nicely taking over his role.
27. NORTH MELBOURNE - JORDAN LISLE
With Nathan Thompson gone, Leigh Brown no good, and the defence a tad short, the Kangaroos sure up their KP stocks with Jordan. A good championship has lifted his profile, he will easily be able to slot at CHB for the Kangaroos in the future. Loves a contest and has good footy nous and skill.
28. ADELAIDE - RHYS O'KEEFE
A nice sized running half back with good skill, he looks a perfect match for what Adelaide look for in a player. A good athlete, he has good workrate and will provide great run from half back or in the future be a damaging midfielder.
29. COLLINGWOOD - TOM LYNCH
A Key Position player at underage level may be a perfect third tall forward player for the Magpies. Was super impressive at the Championship and knows where to lead and finds a lot of space on his opponents. His skills are good but most impressive is is workrate, he wont stop working for you. The Magpie fans will love his efforts to contest all day long.
30. SYDNEY - KADE KLEMKE
The Swans go local. This boy is an absolute workhorse that the Swans seem to love. He has great desire to win every contest, is hard at it, tough tackling and has decent skills. Not the quickest but makes up for that with his will power and I think the Swannies will take a chance with him here thinking he may develop into that midfield run with player they will need after Kirk has gone.
31. ST.KILDA - CHRIS HALL
The Saints go for a zippy midfielder that would of gone higher if not for his size. This kid works very hard, does all the right things and has very good skills. His kicking is very good and has the ability to go forward and do some damage. The saints need some more foot soldiers with pace and they get that here.
32. WESTERN BULLDOGS - MATT DEBOER
With the Bulldogs getting an absolute gift with Cordy, they go for an inside ball winner who had a solid championship. Keeps finding the ball, is fantastic at the stoppages and can run all day. His kicking is okay but something that he will need to work on a bit. With Scott West departing another ball winning clearance machine would be very handy. A bit of a steal this late.
33. HAWTHORN - JAMIE SHEAHAN
Good solid prospect that will have the benefit of getting groomed for a couple of years down at Glenferrie. Is a good hard working midfielder that gets a lot of the ball, but is another one can go forward with great results. Good at teh stoppages both in the midfield and p forward. Dangerous.
34. GEELONG - NEVILLE JETTA
Another steal here for the Cats. A crumbing forward with great pace and smart around the goals. Great goal sense he has a touch of magic about him. Again with their list will be able to develop for a while but can be used to spark the Cats into action if anything goes wrong from next season on. A great get at this stage of the draft.
There you have it at this early stage. I will no doubt have to update this after the draft camp and the trade period but at the moment I can see it going like this.
