we won over 5 games last year, meaning we don't get early PP, l'm not 100% sure but l reckon we might take Jack Watts but then it could be one of the other 2

melbourne can only have a maximum of 4 wins. carlton had the pp and the 3rd pick in the draft, despite finishing 15t. while richmond only had pick 2 for finishing last. exactly what happened last year and have the rules been changed?

It was not only based on that season, the year previous to that was counted as well. If a team performs badly enough over two years, then they get the early priority pick. Otherwise, as is the case for Melbourne this year, a team only gets the priority pick at the end of the first round.

The rules are the same as last year, they were changed the year before I think. The rules are that if you win less than 5 games you get a priority pick before the second round (ie. Richmond last year picks 2, PP18, 19) if you do it the year after as well you get a priority pick before the first round even if you don't finish last (ie Carlton last year picks PP1,3,20). So because we beat Carlton (and 4 other teams) last year we didn't get a priority pick, so this year is our first year getting a priority pick so we will get 1,PP17,19 - just like West Coast get 2,PP18,20. If we win 4 games next year we will get 2 first rounders.

fair enough, but there could have been a lot more to gain if you had just tanked that extra one game last year. i just hope you guys see the light and pick up daniel rich. the guy is all class. you could use your picks 17 or 18 to make a play for someone like ryan gamble and tom lonerghan, because i dont think jack watts will develop quick enough for you guys to get yourselves out of this hole.

I wouldn't touch Ryan Gamble or Tom Lonergan. We are rebuilding, and its much better for us to build from the bottom in order to cement a better long-term team, rather than going for quick fixes. If we do that, we'll end up like Fremantle.

I think we will go for Watts, however I will be happy regardless of which of the big 3 is chosen at pick 1 (assuming we get it).

Really, you must be the first person to work that one out! Guess what, our interim coach now works where - Carlton - what a surprise.

What sort of freaks put their plans together expecting to only 3 win three games the next season? Apart from Carlton.

Presuming that Neitz was going to go all year and that Robbo, Moloney and Rivers wouldn't neck themselves I would have thought that they'd expected to win much more than we did today.

We defintiley need to get out of the hole that we are in off field. Once we have done that we can try and consolidate.

On field is a different matter. Most Melbourne supporters and obviously the club itself realise that trying to get out of a hole (on-field) is not only a pointless, short-term initiative but it is also not their goal in any case. To be a premiership contender is what it is all about and the club is prepared to earn this from the ground up. Building a young squad all over the park that grows and develops together is essential to have any future hope. We may have to endure a bit more pain on field (doing it this way) but seeing the team grow all over the ground will be a consolation over the next couple of years. I think our playing group could be one of the most closest and strongest teams once they get out of these hard times and move forward with the same goal and appreciation for the hard work that has been done to turn things around. It's all about process.
