Re: Names in Jerseys

I have wondered the same thing, surly it would be easier for those viewing at the match to see who the player is as at times its hard to tell a few apart.

Re: Names in Jerseys

Jumpers without names is all class, takes away from the individual and places all the emphasis on their membership of the greater unit; the team.

Soccer and other sports need the names as there are so many teams and players you simply can't recognise them all by faces or jumper numbers.

It might help sell more jumpers though.

I know for a fact I'd own a lot more footy jumpers if they had names on them. Just having a number makes them feel far too generic.

What other sports don't have the names on the jerseys? I'm pretty sure they don't in the NRL. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: Names in Jerseys

How come the surname of each player isn't written on the back of their respective jersey?

Because its a stupid idea. Names on the backs of guernseys looks tacky. Less is more.

(side note: Numbers were only introduced to help umpires make their reports for tribunal).

And why? to sell a few more jumpers? When you get a bit older you'll realise the jumper means more to you than the guy wearing it does.

Re: Names in Jerseys

If they got surnames on the back of shirts in First Class TEST MATCH CRICKET then why not have it in AFL

Cos it looks fricken pathetic - if the day ever comes when the Australian Cricket team have names and numbers i will be deeply disappointed.
Same goes with footy teams - if you need a name to recognise players on your team then your following of that team is questionable.

Show me a Test Match with the players names on the back of their jumpers. Go on.

Re: Names in Jerseys

very much in favor and reckon it's more or less a matter of time (common sense, really).

how so?
empty romantic rhetoric aside, it's simply a more direct form of identification.

Soccer and other sports need the names as there are so many teams and players you simply can't recognise them all by faces or jumper numbers.
clubs can have 40 senior players and 10 rookie/veteran players. as at 2012, that will be around 900 number/name combinations. there are also 44 different players on the field/bench at once. for us footy nerds, this is fine, but, from my experiences with them, for newcomers to the sport it is very difficult to identify the individual players simply by their number (and yes, identification of individuals is important when understanding and evaluating the overall performance of a team)

If they are "new to the game" -tell them to buy a 'Footy Record' and turn to the page somewhere near the middle.

Problem solved.

Re: Names in Jerseys

That's a pain in the arse though. Sure I know all the Melbourne players by look let alone number but there are plenty of opposition players I don't know. I can't afford Foxtel so there are teams I don't get to see a lot of except live. Non-Victorian teams and clubs like North who play a lot of Foxtel games - I don't know all their players numbers or what they look like. It would be a big benefit.

"did you see that goal?"
"no, i was too busy reading this book i had to pay $6 for just so i can figure out who has the ball. why don't you just have the name on the friggen jumper?"
"coz soccer is gay."

as i said, it's simply a more direct form of identification. given that the afl's goal at present is expansion (ie. winning over new fans), common sense makes it's introduction inevitable. :thumbsu:

Re: Names in Jerseys

Personally, from an actual detail point of view, it doesn't work as easily for each team.

For example, you could probably put white lettering on a bombers or carlton top quite easily, but anyone with vertical stripes is either going to have to have letters in the opposite of the stripes, or expand the current white section at the back, which would give more of an appearance that the entire back of the top is white (or whatever colour).

Personally I'm not either for or against this, but the point you raise is a good one. The addition of a name would have to be INSTEAD OF a number to be workable.
