Buckley for mine. Was it 2005 he came back from injury against sydney? Think it was the last time we beat the pies. He had been out for yolks and he stepped in and didn't miss a beat think he got bout 28 possies. He was always such a classy tough player. He was great from the start with the bears and it's a shame he didn't hang round to play in a flag. Also has one of the best footy books I've read

Why are the collingwood supporters even bothering to post on this thread? its pretty clear cut that you prefer Bucks!..
great players the both of them and hard to split... im leaning towards Bucks though.... FWIW i rate Hird, Voss ahead of Bucks... and we all know who i'm going to say is greatest....

You are right, what I was trying to say is that Black has done more in footy than Buckley has.

Black has helped carry Brisbane for years, Buckley was a good player but never had the impact of a Simon Black.
Buckley carried Collingwood in the late 90s....it is J.Brown that is the heartbeat of the Lions now.

Buckley was the face of Collingwood when we were strong in the early 00s....it was Voss/Lynch who were the leaders when the Lions were strong.

Buckley was the ultimate professional into retirement, in his second last season, in the midst of career ending hamstring issues, Bucks pulled out a 29 disposal, 13 mark and 6 goal demolition job against Black and his Lions!!....Black couldn't do that in his prime, let alone nearing the end of his career.

Black a great player, but he was never the leader and clutch player that Bucks was for his entire career.

He never had the same impact. Just like every other Collingwood supporter your view is bias. Nathan Buckley was an overrated player. Sorry to tell you bud

Buckley's performance in the 02 GF was the greatest performance I have ever seen in a losing Grand Final and was a standout in a period where we struggled with a slow, plodding midfield. He carried that team for nigh on 10 years until injury cut him down.

Simon Black has been a quiet achiever, but an achiever all the same. Was never put in the same basket as Voss even though he was/is just as good. Even in the twilight of his career he still dominates that Brissbane midfield yet remains as underrated as in his prime.

I call it a draw, purely based on the support that Black had around him. If he played a sole hand (like Buckley did) in the BL midfield, I think things could have been different and we would be talking about Simon Black as one of the greatest of all time.

I really can't seperate them.

Ok, let's talk about the 2002 grand final then.
Collingwood were complete outsiders to win the game vs the reigning premiers. Just to give a bit of a background of how differently matched the sides were, here are (in my opinion) the top 10 players from both sides, in no particular order:

Brisbane:

Akermanis
Black
Brown
Johnson
Lappin
Leppitsch
Lynch
Michael
Power
Voss

Collingwood:

Buckley
Burns
Clement
Rocca
Tarrant
Wakelin
Licuria
Fraser
N Davis
O'Bree

Let's not even mention the next level of talent, Brisbane had us completely and utterly outmatched.
Yet Collingwood gallantly went down by just 9 points that day, with Buckley being named Norm Smith in a losing side, having 32 touches and a goal. Tell me what else he could have done that day to carry his side over the line? His very mediocre side at that, against what is arguably the best side to ever play the game.

Buckley was a good player but never had the impact of a Simon Black? You're either trolling, ignorant, stupid or all of the above.

Buckley wasn't the best player in the grand final, he shouldn't have won the norm smith.

What about 2003 when Collingwood were raging favourites??? Brisbane had the game won half way through the second quarter

Ablett 1989???

Excellent argument; 'Anyone that disagrees with my views are bias'.

Hmmmmm.

Gee, tough. Buckley was a supreme kick and obviously just class all round, but I do also have countless recollections of Black doing freakish things. An underrated kick too I reckon, probably on account of his handballing skills being so good.

Think I´ll refrain from voting.

In 02 Buckley was the best player for the duration of the game, Voss had the better final term.

Go back and look at the respective sides in the 2003 grand final and explain to me why Collingwood were the raging favourites - because I surely can't work it out. If we had won that grand final there is absolutely no doubt that team would have been the worst to win a premiership in the history of the game.
Lokan, Cole, Holland, Lonie, J Cloke (at CHF no less), Kinnear, Walker, Woewodin, R Shaw, Leon at his worst..... I don't care if the remaining 12 players in the team were all Nathan Buckley, you're not winning a flag with those spuds.
Buckley was good that day, probably our best player, hardly even worth mentioning.
Black was bloody brilliant that day, no doubt, but it's not as if he encountered much resistance.

Disgusting Poll

Buckley is almost rated Collingwood's greatest ever player

Black is a star champion of the game but he would not be Brisbanes greatest player

Disgusting how people continue to downplay how good this bloke was yeah in his younger days was FigJam was not liked he worked on that and would be one of the most respected people in football never put a foot out of line and is a gentleman when ever you meet him

Dominated in rubbish teams and good teams people dont realize how bad our teams was on the late 90's always was a big game player yeah he did not win a flag but seriously people should get there head out of the asses and put your Collingwood hate away he doesnt play for us anymore his retired show the man some respect

Agree with every word.

Its funny how short some peoples memories are of how good Bucks truly was.

Would of been interesting to see if he actually had a great team around him like the Brisbane team was....

He almost won us a GF against Brisbane in '02 with lets be honest a team that was moreso filled with battlers as opposed to superstars.

No disrespect to Black because he is a star of the competition.

Black deserves more respect than that.

No Buckley deserves more respect

Black is a champion but to think the poll numbers would be so close is a joke and just shows me how much everybody really hates Collingwood

I agree, but there's no point getting angry about it. How good Buckley was always gets underplayed on BF. Whether it's the Collingwood factor, or people not warming to his demeanour, or the circumstances he left Brisbane in, who knows? But that's the way it's always been, and I don't see it changing now.

7 time All Australian, 6 time best & fairest, Brownlow medallist, Norm Smith, Rising Star, Magarey Medallist
vs
3 time All Australian, 3 time best & fairest, Brownlow medallist, Norm Smith

Over his career Bucks got more of the ball, used it better, kicked more goals, took more marks. Buckley was obviously a champion midfielder but could also play down down back (see where he played on & beat Carey at the peak of his powers) or up forward (kicked 6 goals in a game against Brisbane in 06).

Black is a better extractor, tackler & handball. That's about it. Everything else Buckley leaves him for dead

I didnt say Buckley commanded more respect, but dont say its a disgusting poll.

Black is a absolute champion as well as Buckley is, who is greater is left to opinion but dont say its a disgusting poll...Buckley is winning and to think he would absolute smash Black in it is pretty naive.

Buckley is a champ, but Black is one as well.....show some respect.

it is harder for black to gain recognition playing for an interstate club to be fair, but buckleys stats alone put him ahead of just about anyone, he didnt have a poor season. Worst one was 2007 when he didnt play much til the end and was a shot duck.

Other than that every year was statistically excellent from day one

Good point, that's why i always put Bucks ahead of Voss, Voss wasn't overly good in his first 3 years.

Black and Voss were also at the feet of a ruckman of note, bucks didn't know what one looked like.

I'd say the ruckman thing is barely the reason, it's just that Black had the advantage of being surrounded by Voss, Lappin, Power, Aker etc & Bucks was basically a one man band... always had taggers all over him and still managed to do what he did..
