There was a lot of talk in trade week, when we were trying to obtain draft picks off North Melbourne to give to the Saints for Ball, that Wellingham could be traded to North to get that higher pick. I am not sure if that was officially true, but if so thank you Brad Scott for one last gift to the Pies.

To have lost Wellingham to get Ball would have been nothing short of a disaster. Would be close to leading the B&F currently.

Goes to show you never know who will explode out of the gate next year. I was for trading Wellingham, I though he was average last year and Ball would be a bigger boost. Thank god I'm not the list manager though because Wellingham suddenly looks like our best young midfielder. I dunno what work he's done over the preseason or who was helping him but he is probably THE most improved player in the comp.

Everything happens for a reason boys. Maybe this is the reason why it has finally all clicked for Wellingham. Maybe he decided to put in that extra little bit of work to rise above the level.

Unofficially;

Pies offered North pick #30 and Wellingham for pick #21.
North rejected this but countered with #30 and Wellingham for pick #25.
We proposed #25 and #62 to St. Kilda but the trade was rejected.
Ergo the Wellingham trade to North never happened.

So we still have Lyon to thank for passing on the guy who is probably leading the Copeland so far.

Lyon, the bloke that just keeps on giving :thumbsu:

Thanks TRS, wasn't sure of the exact workings there. So really had the Saints said Wellingham for Ball we would have gone there in a blink of an eye. They could have passed on Lovett as Wellingham fits that bill and kept their first round pick. It just gets better & better Rossy.

We don't know that the Pies offered Wellingham to the Saints, but it can be reasonably assumed.

We do know (at least as much as we know any of this stuff) that if the Saints had agreed to #25 and #62 for Ball, or if North had agreed to give up #21 for Wellingham and #30 (and Lyon had agreed to #21 for Ball, who knows, the guy's a complete knob... or if #21 had been enough to secure Everitt from the WBD, unlikely...), that the Sheriff's jurisdiction would no longer include the Collingwood midfield.

I thought some of my Supercoach trades have been horrendous!
Ross Lyon would be on the bottom of my league (instead of me, but we are the #1 ranked league in the land) with a trade of:
Out: Ball & pick 16 (which could have been Bastinac)
In: Lovett

Maybe OUT: a truckload of cash too. Depends on whether Lovett wins his dismissal case. I'd have to say given my limited knowledge that he has a strong argument too, given he is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Of course the Saints alledge that the charge had nothing to do with his sacking...

I've always been skeptical of that North rumour, it made no sense. A 5 pick upgrade in the second round is a pittance to pay for a guy that had some obvious potential.

I tend to think there's a fair chance that it was a rumour intentionally floated by MM & co. to give The Boot a boot up the bum.

Who knows, its possible. If it was legit Collingwood didn't think he was going to explode like he has and neither did the other teams. Seems all clubs involved stuffed up a bit but Collingwood lucked out in the end.

imagine how much it would have killed us to see wellingham play like he is right now at the roos or saints

god

near disaster averted for sure

i was against trading wellingham for ball, and i was against trading him all those years ago for kerr when those rumours popped up

his potential has always been there for everyone to see since his first game. now he's starting to live up to it

I wouldn't think he'd have to spread a rumour, just tell them they're thinking of trading him, even if it may not be true.

I am with Didaka, I don't think the potential trade and the change in form a mutually exclusive. I think it's fair to say it may have been a well needed reality check.

I dare say so, Once he learned he was on the Trade Table he got the Kick up the Ass and started to work Harder

So we where just having a Chat with North on the last day of trade week?

I just wish we had held onto pick 14 a few years back and grabbed Jack Grimes, seeing as we had to buy another ruckman with pick 14 only 2 seasons later.

Who said we would even Picked Grimes?

Would have been nothing short of a debacle had we moved him on. Was completely against it at the time and quite frankly did not want to trade any senior listed players with serious potential with the shallow draft approaching.

As TRS said, Rossy Lyon is just so giving. We should send him a card. (signed by the premiership team):p

Also, Brad Scott went very close to pulling one over us too with a trade that would have left us looking like fools.

Maybe it was the fact that Wellingham realised he was being offered to North that made him take his game to the next level

I heard that wellingham was so pissed off about being offered up for trade that he devised the following plan.... Train every minute of the offseason to get in peak condition, play the best footy of his life, win the B&F then go to the gold coast for nothing.
That'll teach em sharod

I would doubt that very much
