Am I the only person that thinks Freo's home jumper always looks purple?

You can't tell.

Well, since we've been wearing the chevrons, I haven't noticed anything.

But then again, when you're at the game, how many people seriously could tell? Too many variables: Distance, the speed of play, and the very fact you're too engaged in the game itself.

As most have said, the colour difference is (likely) due to the material. The lights will reflect off of the polyester shorts and jumpers. Te cotton socks won't have light shining off of them.

It seems unlikely that ISC would use two different purples. Maintaining a consistency across apparel is easier than having different shades.

There's a definite blue-purple to the jumper v red-purple to the socks. And aren't the socks every bit as much made of space age materials as modern day jumpers?

I doubt socks are made out of polyester, however.

Mero previously mentioned something about AFL socks. The modern ones don't have a rollover at the top. If you go to a Rebel Sport and grab a pair of footy socks, they'll have a rollover. It is likely that the player issue material is different to retail socks. But how different can they be? They're going to have to be elasticated, tight, and relatively thick.

I don't see how the sock materials could make it seem like such a lighter purple, all my footy socks are the exact same colour as the jumpers that they go with. Honestly, it's probably just an ISC printing mistake that there not gonna bother making a fuss about just to change them when most players have the socks rolled down.

As SA said different materials will reflect light/absorb different amounts of light, the socks players wear definitely look different to the ones you can buy in the store.

As for Freo, I would agree with E92.
The jumpers are a high gloss very reflective surface that the light shines off.
The socks are a spandex/cotton blend that light is absorbed into.
I bet if you put them both in a room with the lights turned off they would look the same; but any other time, they're going to look different
The other problem is that one is printed onto White material (the jumpers) and the other is dyed into the material. And dyes may not end up the same when you process them differently.
So in conclusion, even if they used the exact same dye, it would look slightly different anyway, and then compounding this is the different material reflects light in different ways, so they will definitely look different.

Dear Brand Approvals AFL,

Last week watching the Richmond v Carlton game, I noticed that in the bottom right hand corner of the Carlton jumper was the Nike 'Dry-Fit' logo.
I'm writing in regards to the AFL's rules on sponsorship.

I know most clubs have a little box on the left hand side that has the manufactures logo on it, but Nike doesn't do that.
What are the rules on advertising on other parts of the jumper?
Surely having 'Dry-Fit' in a different spot is purely marketing?

I was aware that the only 3 places to have jumper sponsorship was the collar, front of the jumper (left breast) and back of the jumper (below the numbers) - yet, this is a whole new place.

But then you've already mentioned the box on the right hand corner, so wouldn't that be 4?

If other manufacturers/clubs have 4 spots, I don't see a problem with Carlton/Nike doing this.

If they had the Nike patch/box AND Dri-Fit logo, then I can see questions being raised.

That's true - but the collar and the box is advertising the exact same thing, where as the collar and 'Dri-Fit' are two different advertisements.

Who really cares? Dri-Fit is just part of the makep of the top, materials etc.

It's more that there is extra marketing and sponsorship on the jumper, when the AFL has strick rules on sponsorship.

Well I still reckon Sydney got away with murder* with their QBE jumper last year.

(*in terms of crimes against AFL sponsor regulations...)

That's right, they had a 3rd QBE sponsorship from memory - but it was to honor the length of the sponsorship, so it might have been given the OK by the AFL for the one game, a bit like Geelongs 80th year with Ford jumper.

But, as far as I can see, there is nothing special about the 'Dri-Fit' other than marketing a little logo that they bump up sports gear with.

The white one has been there for years unchanged, I guess its more a concern thet the small Dri-Fit will slowly turn into yet another advertising bulletin on the gurnsey, at the moment I agree it looks better then the others.

No, what I mean is that every team has a collar sponsorship, chest, back and in the left hand corner, but the collar and left hand corner are advertising the same thing.
My issue is that 'Dri-Fit' is not whats on the collar and is a 4th sponsorship on the jumper, not just the 3 with one doubled.
Plus they put it somewhere else than everyone else.
The AFL supposidly has strick rules about where sponsors can be, which I like, otherwise we get like soccer and NRL with sponsors all over us.

I do not think it's right that Carlton (Or Nike) are allowed to put on another logo, to what is in the AFL rules, no matter how small, when it is purely their for marketing.
