Who cares, what difference would it make? People can register under more than one name anyhow. So why does registering make anyone more credible?

lol @ danni....Exactly what I was going to tell them!!

DOH!!!! I have the second page, with the hyperlinks to all the separate boards, in my address bar AND saved to my favourites. I rarely access Big Footy via the front page

DOH!!!!

I've voted on the homepage poll AND here.
YES, the reason I want registered members it to get rid of stupid idiots and there comments(not you hawkforce or michelle).
Sure, they can register under more than one name but if they continue to make stupid, low comments then they can be kicked of. If they register again as someone else, fine, just get kicked of if they continue in those ways. If they start afresh and post good threads and replies then good on them.

I am going to abstain on this vote.

My head says no. We had to register to go on club boards and it hasn't stopped REGISTERED people constantly trolling...

However...

The concerted attack recently has made the board almost non-functional, so I can fully understand that most people are getting frustrated.

I just hope that certain REGISTERED people don't see this as a mandate to abuse.

At the time of this post, 78.5% (including myself) have voted in favour of making it Registered Users Only.

I believe it will reduce a lot of the really mindless abuse. It won't eliminate it totally ... after all, I'll still be around

... but at least it will mean that people who want to write complete crap will have to live with it. And I'm quite happy to live with anything I say ... even if I KNOW that what I've said is stupid ... as it sometimes is

NO.

There are plenty of crap registered users and a few excellent unregistered users...registering isn't going to change anything.

If you take a look at Danny Chook's thread on "More Strife For the Kangaroos", you'll find some people posting under the names Tim Webster and Bill Woods, both unregistered, both doing it in a humourous way. Would they have done it if they had to go and register? Just reading that and getting a laugh convinced me that things should be kept as they are.

(and yes, I did vote on the front page)

I have voted NO on the main page. Whilst I acknowledge people's points about having to register being a deterrant I think in a lot of cases it won't make a difference. Even setting up another email account relatively simple matter nowadays.

A registered user is still going to be able to post crap like we have seen on here over the last few weeks. If we really want to fix the problem then I would suggest Bluey needs to have a look at the way the main boards are being moderated. If clearly offensive things are removed quickly then we won't have problems. Most of these people are after attention, removing their contributions deprives them of that. Forcing them to register certainly won't.

I'm not sure if you are serious, or are taking the piss out of us?

I don't know if you came along to bigfooty, thought Hawkforce would make a good nic, registered and and away you went?

I'll assume you did just this!

For a long time we had a poster here who steadfastly objected to registering and posted regularly using the unregistered nic of Hawkforce.

Now the the nic has been registered, he is using the nic of Hawkforce. (<- note the dot).

Unfortunately, when people refer to Hawkforce, that is who they are referring to. Having 2 Hawkforce's does make things a little more confusing.

CJH,

I had to register "Hawkforce" in order to post on the Club Forums, last year.

Since then I have been posting on the main board as "hawkforce."

I replied to this topic under my REGISTERED tag out of a sense of irony as it seems my point has been made moot. The vote will be overwhelmingly yes.

Almost time to have to get used to "Hawkforce"

Sorry - I didn't know that! Hope I didn't make too big a fool of myself there!

There is more irony here. Not only did I vote 'no' on the poll, I also run a site (see my sig) that has a message board that I am keeping deliberately unregistered!!!!!

Go figure!

If people are registered they have to supply certain information which allows the moderators to be able to exercise more control over the posters.
Where as unregistered are pretty much able to do as they please.
Cheers

I'm going to vote no.

I'm still fairly new here, but I've worked out in my mind very early on whose I'll bother reading and who I'll completely ignore. There are a lot of unregistered posters posting abusive/offensive material, but equally there are registered, regular users who are experts at insulting, offensive, stupid posts (No names, no packdrill - everyone has these opinions of certain posters - I'm sure, in time, people will hold them of me). Stopping unregistered posters will only solve part of that problem.

What it will stop is what Shinners has referred to above - the humourous use of an unregistered name. I've done that once, and I used a variation of my "signature" at the bottom so people would know that it was me who did it. It would be a shame to lose the ability to adopt another identity for the purposes of making a point.

The rubbish we had to put up with is another issue - being unregistered had nothing to do with the material posted - had a registered users posted it, would the offensive nature have been diminished? I think not. What was required there was swift deletion, so perhaps assistants to Bluey in moderating the board need to be considered.

I run my own message board, and help to administer another one. Both of those boards are unregistered, and while they have significantly less traffic than this site, there are no problems with "trolls" because they are either ignored or "dealt with" by the board's regulars.

Ignoring them is the key. If you aren't interested in a post, don't respond. Don't give the trolls the satisfaction of acknowledging their existence. If there's three or four posts by them with 0 replies then they'll soon get the point.

I'm registered because I believe in establishing an identity under this name. I want to be held accountable for the things posted under my name. But there are compelling reasons not to register, and I can understand people's reticence to do so. Agreed, there aren't a lot of worthwhile unregistered posters, but not only do you risk losing them, but you create barriers to other people entering this community.

No

will not solve a thing.

Secure Boards, rigourously policed and set up with Firewalls and password protection is the way to go.

If we really feel the need that is ...

If people would just learn to ignore the idiots then they will go away - I promise !

So Danni cannthe unregistered vote there too???

I personally don't care one way or the other... majority rules...

NO

For all the reasons that elt, Shinboners, Danny Chook, BSA, etc. said.

More aggressive board moderation would be a better solution.

Some of the most offensive posters are registered. To them I have one piece of advice: Offensive language is not funny or clever, and doesn't win respect OR an argument.
