The only person who thinks that Atkins it "too* fringe" is you. He's a lock now.
Except the man himself : Scott not surprised by the rise of self-proclaimed "fringe" Cat Tom Atkins

He has had a pretty horrid month for a midfielder and is not a four quarter player yet - yes I get he is playing a role in the team and is bringing excellent pressure. I think it is much to early to declare him captain material. needs another 12months in the midfielder playing at a high level

I don't think Joel would have even suited up for 2021 if we'd won it in 2020.

His leadership is great, but even compared to last year there is a decline in on-field performance (as you'd expect). I don't see him going into 2023 even if we don't take home the big prize.

That also explains why we're going hard at Hopper, too.
Hopper is Tigerville bound according to most

Hawkins will, I think, go on next year no issues - but Selwood is probably done, even if we don't win one.

Hawkins hits me as the sort of guy who's a leader, but not a captain, if that makes sense. He doesn't have Selwood's assertiveness or sense of mongrel, but you'd really look up to him if you were a young forward.
Who is the current AA captain?

I would pick Jeremy Cameron.

Not because he’s our best player but I simply love his ‘give it to me and I’ll get it done’ attitude it’s a leader showing the way.

Jeremy loves his farm and anonymity he would hate the media duties of being captain. Super on field leader though.

I don’t think he would like anything that goes with it either and I know that he will always play like a leader regardless but I look at a guy like Shannon hurn who is just no nonsense, not a media darling, and just sets a great example on the field and could see Cameron doing something similar

If Hopper is so highly rated as a potential leader than surely Selwood stays one final season to see if Hopper is up to it after one season.

Disrespectful to Stewart who I assume to be the next captain sure but not as disrespectful as Judd waltzing into Carlton and immediately handed the captaincy.

I want Selwood’s records untouchahle. Something like 43 finals played & somewhere closer to 280 games as league record holding captain looks good to me.

Don't ask me to explain why, but I reckon a player should have at least a couple of years in the team before getting captained. Bit early to make a call on Holmes temperament but SDK already looks very controlled and competitive. I reckon there's some good young options in Close/Holmes/SDK who looks like future possibilities.

If Selwood retired tomorrow im voting Atkins. I think he is a player who will probably lift with the captaincy, Stewart I reckon does best focusing just on the general play+ His age is just right to provide a handover to one of the current youngsters when there at their peak.

Five year meat Tray for Captain Dempsey after picking up a Norm Smith and the Coleman as pure midfielder in his fourth season.(Atkins retires with three premierships to his name after giving his all- We get pipped by the pies in 2024 coz Hawk gets gastro from extreme leather poisoning in the SF.

That would probably be Taranto - Tigers are still in it for Hopper, though.

If it is Richmond, then I expect a call to be made in the next couple of days because the Tigers and Giants are now both out of the season.
Heard someone say both, like when they got Caddy and Prestia, mates.

Why not?

He's already a leader, with his vice-captaincy and the AFLPA role.

He is a leader by example - his gut-running and efforts are second to none. He's also hugely courageous.

Frankly, he would already be captain at any other club bar perhaps Richmond.

I find this irrational dislike that some have of Dangerfield to be hugely perplexing.
Cos his calf problems means he is as close to retirement as hawkins and selwood.

I disagree about it being adventurous

Watching the team this year, when the pressure has risen and we've looked at who'll step up under that pressure - more often than not it's been Atkins who's led the way

There's something about Atkins this year, especially in final quarters of tight games that he's been almost Selwood like in leading from the front and setting the tone for the team - he's just a bull who doesn't want to lose

He's also had previous captaincy experience - co-captain of our VFL team in 2017 but an injury impacted season. Then was sole captain in 2018 when he had a career best season, named captain of the VFL team of the year & won his second Geelong VFL b&f

He's a natural leader

Stewart's a good player, but I haven't really seen the same from him - yes he's our co-VC this year, but there's been times that whens the pressures gone up that he hasn't found it as easy to step up with it. I know he's most likely the next captain but not sure if he's really the best option
What a ridiculous comment. stewart was arguably our best player along with cameron on saturday night. His ability to get to and influence contests he had no right to on saturday was phenomenol.

and he was our best player in our last high pressured game against richmond with all the crowd booing him.

stewart has become the best player in the team to deal with pressure. He now thrives on it.

atkins was missing for the first 3 qtrs on saturday. fantastic last qtr but where was he earlier?

I get that he’s the less obvious choice, but Tom Atkins for me. Obviously he's all about effort and integrity, but these are the cornerstones of any great captaincy, particularly one that drives/maintains an existing sound culture.
He
In the few interviews he’s done, he’s clearly quite smart and articulate. He does seem a little introverted, which may count against him, but I have no doubt that he’d absorb the gravity of the role and grow into it. If memory serves, he also captained the VFL side which, although quite different, means he’s no stranger to the responsibility of leading a side.

And at 26, he’s the perfect age to give us at least 4-6 years of stability. This, in my estimation, is an undervalued criteria. I have certainly nothing against Stewart, but at 29, while in his playing prime, we’ll be thinking of a captain beyond him sooner rather than later. And if that precipitates a possible captain merry-go-round, that’s not particularly desirable.
Stats show that around 60% of company CEO's are introverts. They are not mutually exclusive.

Cos he is the same age as selwood and theres a high change he wont even make it to the end of the season next year.
He's played every single game this year with a time on ground at 95%, playing probably the best footy he has ever played. That's virtually every minute of football this season he's been on the field - more footy than any other single player on our list. And you're telling me he's unlikely to make it to the end of next season?

Wasn’t Atkins the VFL captain?
Yep

Co-captain in 2017, then the lone captain in 2018 - that turned into a career best season, he won his second club VFL B&F and was named captain of the VFL team of the year

Not sure why there's an idea he's not a leader

Have you told Hawkins that who's looking at playing on for at least another couple of seasons...

Yes. He isnt the same player he was three years ago. Showing clear signs of aging this year. The end will come very quick for hawkins when it does come as it does for most tall fowards. I would be very surprised if next year isnt his last season.

Of course the end is going to come quick. He is a 34 year old professional athlete in a sport where nearly all players don’t get past 32.

Thanks captain obvious

I agree that we are bit light-on for obvious options aside from our current vice captains. Without a named leadership group aside Joel/Pat/Tom, it is hard for us to comment on who is driving standards at training, who is taking an interest in the development of our young players. Looking at on-field leadership, Aitkins and Zac Guthrie I feel have been impressive and vocal with setting up and directing their more senior teammates.
