We've known for years that the reliance upon T20 to pay the bills was always going to create a paucity of Test class players, so there's no point complaining about it now that it's about to materialize. Sorry to say, I don't think the green baggy will ever carry the prestige it once did.
It will always carry prestige - they don’t hand them out that easily - but I’m concerned the players that get them will be anywhere near the players that have gone before them - batting wise

What concerns me is I doubt the priority for younger players now is not to play Test cricket, but to earn a living playing T20 competitions around the world. I watched a bit of the game tonight, they had Hale miked up and he was talking about how they don't play for 9 days because of the Test, so a lot of golf will be played in the interim. He made a first ball duck. Then there was Renshaw who batted for about 4 overs and was unable to field because he was cramping up. Cramping up from what? And the other guy who was miked was a wicketkeeper from England, Billings, who wouldn't be in his 30s yet, but he's retired from the red ball game.

FYI - appropriate to pop this in here.

Probably Next Next Generation, although the likes of Konstas, Beardman, Dixon, Weibgen, Vilder are all making their moves out of Youth cricket and into State & BBL squads.

Aitken played 2nds for Qld a month or so ago too. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets a rookie contract with Qld now next season not that Pfeffer has retired and there isn't really any noticeable standouts as far as keeper batsman go in Qld. They'd been using Leigh Drennan as a stop gap in that 2nds side and he is older than Peirson I think. Aitken's glovework is excellent, batting has a bit of work to do but has a lot of potential.

Corey Wasley made a double 100 for WA 2nds not long ago too, looks really good.

is Peake the son of former Vic 'Clinton'?

I’ll deal with the Poms - both not test match quality players, don’t blame them but they’re not in their system for a reason

The batting is dire in the short-to-medium term. I am at a loss who to pick, but offer the following:

Batsmen

Pucovski - No. Not up to it, and I do not think he really wants to play. A batsman who misses as many matches as he does is too much of a liability.

Renshaw - Yes. He has shown he can do it but has been treated poorly, in my view from a distance because he has been in direct competition with some of Langer's favourites (Bancroft and Harris) for a spot.

Kurtis Patterson - Remember him? Debuted the same season as Head and was better in my estimation, and the pick of the bunch (including Labuschagne). He is 30 at the moment so he may be more a short than medium term option, but if he can pull it together for a two or three seasons then it is worth giving him a spot. And yes, I realise he has had some rough years. This is a selection based on technique and application, and the other side of the coin as to why Bancroft and Harris should never play again.

Bowlers

I think we currently have very good spin-bowling depth, and since the tour of India earlier this year and considering the emergence of Green (present form aside) I wonder if we could play two spinners in most of our matches?

As a bowling line-up, I would favour:

Cummins
Richardson
Murphy
One of Swepson or Kuhnemann

I really think we have an opportunity with Green and the spinners to create a point of difference and to develop some tactical flexibility. Of course, this is contingent on Green's ability to bowl 15-20 overs an innings. I am also ready to flexible with the fast bowlers given injuries and so on. Any of their careers could end tomorrow after all.

I may regret returning to this forum.

Harry Dixon (VIC - St Kilda Cricket Club)

Non-travelling reserve players

Xander Buxton (VIC - Melbourne Cricket Club)
Ollie Peake (VIC - Geelong Cricket Club)

All rated very highly and doing well at district ones level. Peake probably the best performed of the lot although hard to beat out the top order bats in that U19 squad.

Konstas the big one whom Kerry O'Keefe singled out recently to step up in the mid-long term to open for Australia.

The "internationals" in this BBL is horrendous depth wise.

Kerry O'Keefe also declared Jason Sangha to be the next Ponting and considered Jake Carder a test bolter a few years ago

It was - many years ago. It would be behind a few comps now, the standard has deteriorated big time.
But we have international stars like Corey Andersen, Paul Hose, Zahar Khan and Joe Clarke

The only bloke with any sort of international superstardom this year is Quinton De ****. Genuinely laughable

These guys are no names for their country though

Other leagues around the world like the SA20, the Hundred, and even BPL and Major League Cricket are able to lure current international cricketers to the tournament
