Riewoldt to captain Saints

NICK Riewoldt has been appointed the sole captain of St Kilda.

Riewoldt held the title last year with Lenny Hayes and Luke Ball, but will skipper on his own this year and possibly beyond.

Riewoldt becomes the Saints’ first permanent captain since Robert Harvey in 2002.

He first captained the Saints in 2005 as part the club’s rotational policy.

More to come

Finally a decision :)

I feel for Lenny. Both Roo and Lenny are impossible to split. Both bleed Red, Black and White like the one and only Sir Robert Harvey.

Would have been a tough decision. Hopefully the boys can rally and get on the job for season 2008!!!!

finally a decision .. would be lying if I said I wasn't slightly disappointed (for Lenny), but can certainly see why Roo got it.

One way or the other, I'm definitely happy that we've gone the single captain route. Either would've done a great job, so we really can't lose.

Kosi was close I heard.

If you look back at the games he was captain he was dominant.

Good luck ROO!

Obviously I wanted Riewoldt as captain but like you said we couldn't have gone wrong which ever way they went. Lenny is entitled to be disappointed but he seems like the last player to sulk or let the disappointment get to him.

I wouldn't have had a problem if we'd gone with co-captains again but to the vast majority of the football community you simply have to have a single captain because that's how it has always been. Once that decision was made, I'm glad it was Riewoldt. To me he's just got the presence of a leader and the events of a couple of years should only make him a stronger.

Very happy with the choice. I hated the idea of changing captains each year and having multiple captains. This is the right decision and signals a more traditional and proffessional way to appoint captains.

You can have many leaders, that is why you have the leadership group. There should only be one captain: Best available player and leader.

damn and i thought i had my bid for the captaincy wrapped up..

oh well ill try again for next years ;)

Congrats riewoldt but next year i got your number mwuahahaha :P

Lenny or Roo were both good choices.

I think the new GC team may have helped to tip it Roo's way...and I note the long term Captain comment from Lyon.

I think that appointing him captain in the long term may have helped retaining him in the futere, instead of him going back home or just leaving for another team at some point or another of his career (like Lockett, Hall, etc, did in the past). He maybe wouldn't have gone at all, but it is a good way of telling him that the staff and the club believe in him, apart from the money he earns. :)

Lyon also said that Roo would likely bea long term capatain.

So that is alsoa change from the one year term back to indefinate.

Is Nick Riewoldt going to be right to fire in rnd 1?

You know, for dream team purposes hahaha

Is congrats to Nick, a gun player who is a strong leader for your club

yeh i've heard that as well. admittedly he looked to be running smoothly in the pre-season games. But saints fans?..how is he?

^replace 'is' with 'and'

Here the word is that he hasn't had the best preseason and is going into round 1 not fully fit and very sore...

Strange given he produced a pretty solid display against the Crows in the NAB Cup GF. He may be slightly hampered by tendonitis on long kicks.....but he looks just as good as ever in every other department.
